Labour isn't Working - Thread 37

In Nuthatch's absence, I've been asked to start the new thread!

A chat thread for those of us who don't like this Labour government.

"Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."

Perhaps we should go back to order books for pensioners, too? They can get their sorry backsides down to the Post Office instead of clogging up M&S Food and the garden centres?

Or better yet, let's not stereotype and dehumanise people. It helps not one jot.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 29/07/2026 10:21

There’s also a myth that young men and women are desperate to work but just don’t have ‘the skills’. That, IMO, is rubbish. That it is rubbish is tacitly recognised by Burnham saying that a university education shouldn’t be perceived as a gold standard for work (thanks, Mr Blair, for debasing university degrees and dumping on the Polys’ fantastic provision of technical training).

If young people wanted to train, they would. If they wanted to start at the bottom and work up, they would.

We do need all sorts of better equipped young people, whether for traditional areas or newer ones like IT. But that requires those people to see the benefit in long hours and hard work. You can’t fill apprenticeships with people who don’t want to do the job at the end of it. And there’s too little downside in not doing the job.

Agree, You can lead a horse to water and all that….

Pensions are very different. Pensions aren't intended to be a short term safety net.

My point is that the stereotyping and dehumanising on this thread is unhelpful and actually rather counter-productive.

I think the 10% proposal for everyones estates is reasonable. 10% is a low enough percentage that I don't think people will take dramatic steps to mitigate it..

I think the problem of people who don't work needs to be tackled through different initiatives rather than wrapped up into care. I needs cultural change to be coming non-accepting of people who don't contribute. Simple stuff like going back to paying benefits at the job center rather than them landing in people bank acccounts.

Even the wordings - eg "Entitled to".

Do you have an actual point or are you here to finger-wag at tone?

A full third of the fees paid by self-funders is currently used to subsidise 'state' funded spaces in the same care home.

Bet that doesn't change.

So the 'broad-shouldered' will pay an extra 1.8% on their salary from age 34 (ie all their higher-earning years) + 45% of their care home fees... of which about a third of the total (ie 2/3 of what they're paying) is actually just an additional subsidy for other people.

Fuck that.

Am I behind
I thought Burnham favoured the 10% IHT to fund social care ?

He’s been supporting it for over 10years

Squirrelsarecleverbastards · 29/07/2026 11:09

They did drag their sorry arses to work for decades, pensioners that is, and have paid tax and NI.

"There would be uproar if people actually had to shift their arses to get to the job centre"
and
"They seem to manage to shift their arses to get to the pub"

Aren't "tone". Spitting out stereotypes such as the above is not helpful. In the same way that stereotyping Reform voters isn't helpful, for example. Which is a point made often on MN.

redange · 29/07/2026 11:11

You put the 10% death duty tax on Social Care and Labour would be completely wiped out at the Next Election. That is total and even the Labour Party are not that stupid. You see people only want those that are 'richer' even by £1 to pay taxes but to impose Death Duties on everybody is 'kamikaze' politics at its worst

. For the record the current limit of £23,500 for paid old age care unless (sectioned or continuation of care) is outrageous when we give over £11 Billion on Foreign Aid and the current Labour Government want to give £50 Billion to Mauritius and sovereignty to the Chagos Islands. You cannot take these people seriously until they realise UK people must always come first. This, opposed to the Socialist Planks giving money away from the 'Poor' United Kingdom to feather their Virtue Signalling Dreams.

Actually, some will never have worked or not worked for a long time. I don't know what the percentages are, though. But my point was about stereotyping, not about pensioners not having worked etc.

angelos02 · 29/07/2026 11:14

I am sick of hearing 'pensioners have worked all of their lives' nonsense. Millions haven't. Especially women of a generation that stopped working when they got married. This isn't a criticism of them. It is just not true that 'they all worked all of their lives'. There have always been wasters and those that just happen to be older now will have been no different.

Edited

Do you think more pensioners are receiving their pensions without having worked that there are benefit claimants who don’t work?

TBF, stereotyping of the elderly was all the rage among the left on MN when the WFA cut was announced.

Surely the answer to that is in my use of the word "some"?

Squirrelsarecleverbastards · 29/07/2026 11:29

I think having to pick up benefits in person will help cut fraud, it will make it more difficult to claim and spend time out of the UK.

That may be true, but once they reach retirement age, there is very little to be done about that.

What’s dehumanising here?

It is dehumanising for people not to have a meaningful role in society - leaving them sat in their bedroom building up mental health issues.

Plenty of pensioner-bashing goes on generally on MN, from all sides, tbf.
