Starmer is claiming credit for an 80 per cent fall in net migration since a peak in 2023, in large part due to a visa clampdown introduced under the Conservatives.
He insists his efforts to reduce small boats crossing the English Channel are working, with numbers down 40 per cent compared with the same period last year. However, the 365-day rolling average is still higher than it was when Labour took power.
The NHS has also been told to intensify efforts on routine treatment, as Starmer seeks to avoid an embarrassing rise in waiting lists being announced just before his departure next month.
He is boasting of “the fastest fall in NHS waiting lists for 17 years” after hitting an interim target of treating 65 per cent of non-urgent cases within 18 weeks by March. However, waits rose in April and are now back to February levels.
