Feeling so lucky that I have the last builder left that is solvent and running a serious business. His customers happily pay him top whack and VAT so that his men are properly remunerated, pensions , sick pay etc .
But he has to compete with the cowboys.
He is fifty-something.
When he retires we won’t have any more like him.

@justasking111 what's the deal with the big builders? Why are they not paying people for months?

FFS! I know it’s not a prerequisite to, you know, actually have a bit of experience in your brief but Defence is one of those things where you’d hope they’ve at least been in the shadow role if they’ve not directly served.

Because it reduces your overdraft. The builders merchant, double glazing company, kitchen and bathroom suppliers etc are gifting you their products until paid for.

The sub contractors, brickies, plasterers, joiners, kitchen/bathroom fitters etc are gifting you their labour until paid.

It's a free loan in effect.

I thought that they would have to pay for supplies upfront and I suppose the terms of the sub contractors are negotiable but not that negotiable!

All public sector that I’ve worked for absolutely hung onto the money until they absolutely had to pay it. Frequently needed to chase it up on suppliers’ behalf with accounts.

Not just one role, multiple. It’s endemic.

Given the rumour is that Burnham offered it to Reeves, I think we should be thankful for Streeting!

So Streeting got Defence after Reeves said no. That’s a snub and a half for Streeting. Once a contender so strong that Starmer had to try to nobble him, now a late substitute for Reeves in a department that Burnham doesn’t give a shit about.

I'm really hoping that Healey looks at reversing a load of Reeves' decisions and making more sensible ones which promote employment and growth.

One can only hope.
