In Nuthatch's absence, I've been asked to start the new thread!

A chat thread for those of us who don't like this Labour government.

"Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."

I was thinking about this. Does that mean there could have been nothing for Streeting?

I was thinking about this, and I don't think so. It's very unlikely Streeting went from not getting anything to getting Defence. So I think he would have had something (Justice or Environment, maybe, or even back to Health), just not Defence.

Reeves turning down Defence is probably what made the process last about a year as he had to shuffle his shuffle!

I’m just imagining the farming community waking up early this morning:

“ANGELA FUCKING EAGLE!!!!???"

There might have been some rearrangement I suppose, to fit him in somewhere, but I’d have thought the permutations were pretty limited given the jobs handed out to Burnham groupies.

I suspect Streeting will be out of Defence quite quickly. It’s just not his area. Looks to me like he’s been set up to fail.

VAT on energy bills.

Thanks!

Sarahconnor1 · 21/07/2026 08:11

Friendly fire from Darren Jones who has just tweeted that digital ID was unfunded so the VAT cut can't come from there.

@justasking111 what's the deal with the big builders? Why are they not paying people for months?

There's about 30 new houses built in my village...most of which have sat in the market for nearly a year...so presumably cash flow is part of the problem? Although maybe its always been like this?

Yeh it’s not like they will have put money away just sitting there.

Still it politically it’s smart as it marks a switch from bollard and many will repeat the it’s from Digital ID savings. As seen on mn already.

The whole let’s introduce an unpopular policy, tell people they have to take it even though not in the manifesto, then scrap it and we saved money is Labour nuts though.

So Streeting got Defence after Reeves said no. That’s a snub and a half for Streeting. Once a contender so strong that Starmer had to try to nobble him, now a late substitute for Reeves in a department that Burnham doesn’t give a shit about.

I was thinking that given Healey is Chancellor, then Burnham absolutely gives a damn about Defence?

Yes and @DenizenOfAisleOfShamemakes sense, he was going to get something as choosing him for defence over Al Carns or keeping Dan Jarvis is an unconnected role for him. But AB wanted him to have something major.

Oh my word. So Burnham’s misled the country on day one.

I’ve said previously that I get a strong whiff of hucksterism from Burnham. Him fibbing fits with that.

Possibly. But I’m more inclined to think that Healey is there for the perception of level-headedness rather than as a sign of defence priority.

One can only hope.

Rayner’s return will at least give us comedy capers along the way.

The building around me is immense ,I don't mind In towns but it's over green belt and golf courses and green spaces. Old empty offices left.does this means inspite of all this building non of that is social housing so now we will have more ??

seriouslycanthisgetWORSE · 21/07/2026 08:37

Healy maybe great generally but does he know about eccomomics ?

HoldingOntoMySanity · 21/07/2026 08:48

I genuinely don't understand the whole digital ID thing.... anyone who has had to deal with the debacle that is Gov.UK One knows that this is just a form of digital ID and it's already been introduced (and fails in so many ways I cant even begin.... took me 3 months to sort it out when I had to prove who I was as a Director of a company for Companies House). So what Digital ID are they talking about scrapping? I mean- now I'm trying to do my quarterly tax return under the brand new Making Tax Digital requirements and that requires my digital ID as well just to fill in the HMRC requirements. I'd be delighted if they scrapped that- because although I have successfully FINALLY used Gov.uk One for CH, HMRC doesn't recognise it and when I rang up HMRC to talk about this they said they knew there were teething problems and the whole identification system does not marry up with other Government agencies.

It will certainly be interesting given he resigned over lack of funding, but is now in a position to fund.

It’s either fake news that RR was offered defence, or, it’s well known that RR is so well hated in the defence sector that everyone knew RR wouldn’t be able to take it, apparently even she doesn’t have that much front.

and…i suspect after the warm fuzzy flow of my big three pack of sneering horrible pols being out/demoted (ks, bp,RR), that’s as good as it gets for good news.

we’ve got one unfunded spending commitment so far today, and a softening labour market that the ONS percentage poor data capture hasn’t so far captured. But ask anyone in the private sector…

Also delighted that the sneering KS, RR, and BP are out/sidelined.

They represent all that is wrong with the UK.

So pleased. Sad that their damaging policies for schools and businesses will likely stay. For this gov anyway. But at least they can’t inflict more.

A few days ago, I read that we should watch out for Burnham doing this. Neither Digital ID or Chagos are funded apparently, so any promises made on the back of scrapping them is a fib.

Funny that Jones is throwing stones though after being sacked. 😂

Agree, Reeves could never have accepted Defence. She was blamed for the fiasco on the DIP, and Burnham had replaced her with Healey.

If I were very cynical and suspicious - which I’m not, I’m a happy-go-lucky bumpkin who takes Labour at face value 🙃 - I’d almost suppose Reeves was being humiliated and punished by Burnham.

Surely not, though. He’s all for women in power.

Yes.

That’s why women got Bridget P who is supposed to fight for our interests.,
