In Nuthatch's absence, I've been asked to start the new thread!

A chat thread for those of us who don't like this Labour government.

"Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."

Jo Stevens has stepped down as Wales secretary.

Well seeing as I've never heard of them in Wales, they won't be missed 🙄

Lucy Powell is now Education Secretary. Bridget Phillipson is staying as the Minister for Women and Equality - I bet she’s cross about that.

I hope she's furious. Tiny 🎻

That’s not great. I could understand Starmer (for all that I don’t like him). At least we know that he can talk with other countries’ leaders. Miliband is going to irritate the Trump administration.

We're a laughing stock on the world stage. Can't sink much lower so why not have Punch in the position of foreign secretary.

😂😂😂😂😂😂

I was talking about construction this weekend to the owner of a building company. Construction is fooked. Can't find qualified people because they won't work for big builders because they don't get paid for months. Government are the worst payers of them all.

Whatever anyone thinks of the royals or king charles, he's a natty dresser!

justasking111 · 20/07/2026 22:09

Well it's been an interesting day.

The unions don't appear to have insisted their pet MPs are slotted in.

What happened with Streeting, did he not get anything?

Not everything is announced, I don't think. Longest process ever!

This website is helpful as it shows both filled and yet-to-be-filled positions: labourlist.org/2026/07/live-andy-burnham-appoints-cabinet/

Just checked. He's still in there. Dan Jarvis hasn't been seen at all afaik.

Approx 15 people still in No.10 at 10.30pm. I'm off to bed. They'll be going all night at this rate.

Do you get sacked by phone but given a role face to face?

Maybe in the front, out the back, if you have a face like thunder afterwards!

I believe it is the case that you get sacked over the phone so you don’t have to do The Walk of Shame.

So Deputy PM and Defence are the last big jobs still standing. Can’t see Wes in Defence so I’m guessing he’ll get Justice, Energy Transport or Environment as the others left are pretty junior/low profile roles. As Ed and Wes hate each other I’m assuming that Ed will have said he wants an acolyte in Energy.

NoWordForFluffy · 20/07/2026 22:39

I'm not sure Ed has much sway, given where he's ended up! So I vote Wes for Energy based on that. 🤣 Or Justice.

OP posts:
Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/07/2026 22:43

I think Wes would be ok in justice.

I can totally believe it. All my close male family members are/were in construction (my dad had his own company, I’m living in a house he built), and I’ve worked alongside Government procurement myself.

Marmalademorning · 20/07/2026 22:47

Can’t wait to see how Millipede gets on with Trump! 😂

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/07/2026 22:48

All the 🍿 - what else can you do?

Wonder if trump has come across David Milliband?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/07/2026 22:52

Goodness!

NoWordForFluffy · 20/07/2026 22:53

Other appointments just announced by Burnham include:

  • Alex Norris being made the justice secretary
  • Angela Eagle the environment secretary
  • Miatta Fahnbulleh taking Ed Miliband's old job at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero
OP posts:
NoWordForFluffy · 20/07/2026 22:55

What do we know about Miatta Fahnbulleh then? Is she as fervent and deluded as Miliband?

OP posts:
Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/07/2026 23:09

I think she’s one of Burnham’s close allies, who he’s rewarding.
