Labour isn't Working - Thread 37

In Nuthatch's absence, I've been asked to start the new thread!

A chat thread for those of us who don't like this Labour government.

"Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."

IIRC the issue with Haigh was that she wasn't open about her conviction when given the job by Starmer. It only came out later.

I've been watching Sky news for the last hour and as a northerner I'm already over the obsession with the North/Northern Powerhouse/ Professional Northerner shtick.

I hope the government, MPs and Mayors tone that down quickly.

Yeah I'm northern too, and feel the same. Its making me cringe now actually. North this, north that. Typical Burnham, he's like a stuck record. No thank you. Govern for the whole country please.

Judging by the people who have walked in so far, Burnham is appointing all of his north west mates into cabinet positions.

Parents suing the private schools that shut suddenly.

@NoWordForFluffy it’s yet to be determined whether or not he broke the rules though

I didn’t realise you were a solicitor - for some reason I thought you worked in finance. So yeah, absolutely - banned forever. Interesting observations of standards in public life.

Kemi has apparently said that she wrote to the Met after Steve Bray made a racket in Keir Starmer’s resignation speech and that’s why they put the rules in place for today. That Steve Bray really pisses me off. We should be able to do all of this stuff in a dignified way.

Oh dear, I didn’t realise mumsnet classes photos of the King and Keir Starmer as ‘sensitive images’!

edited to add when I tried to post a message came up that it was a ‘sensitive image’.

I'm talking about my personal viewpoint. I appreciate there's a process. I don't think Haigh, Farage or bloody Boris Johnson are / were fit to be MPs! 🤷‍♀️

That’s ok but it’s why we have votes. If the process doesn’t take them out people can decide.

That is true.

I don't have to think they're suitable to be MPs though, regardless of the process.

It's probably a good job I don't get a say on all MPs, tbh, there may not be many left! 😬🤣

Yvette Cooper is Health Secretary.

Definitely preferable to weaselly Wes

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 20/07/2026 20:56

I’m surprised Cooper accepted health. It’s a shit job with no upside. Mostly, though, it’s a massive demotion from HS and FS. She looks desperate to stay in Cabinet, unlike Reeves who at least had the gumption to say ‘Chancellor or I walk’. Cooper’s gone down in my estimation.

Where the hell is Streeting? This could be the end of his entire political career. Perhaps he’ll stand down come the next GE.

😁

NoWordForFluffy · 20/07/2026 21:02

Streeting has a teeny tiny majority, so I'd imagine his job security isn't certain. Quite a few Labour MPs are likely worried about their positions next GE.

Couldn't Burnham have started this process earlier in the day? It's like the first week proper of Strictly and going on fucking forever!

Do you get sacked by phone but given a role face to face?

Maybe in the front, out the back, if you have a face like thunder afterwards!

Sky reporting Streeting went in a few minutes ago.

It’s nearly dark here, get a move on Burnham.

Angela Rayner housing secretary

NoWordForFluffy · 20/07/2026 21:39

Sky pointed out that at one point there were 14 people waiting to see Burnham in Downing St. Bit crowded!

Lucy Powell is now Education Secretary. Bridget Phillipson is staying as the Minister for Women and Equality - I bet she’s cross about that.

Not least because she doesn't know what a woman is (or acts like she doesn't care)!

I'm not sure about Powell as Ed Sec. I suppose time will tell.

Sadly Starmer, Reeves and Phillipson did enough damage to education with their spiteful VAT policy. I’d love it to be reversed but I doubt Labour will do that.
