That’s not great. I could understand Starmer (for all that I don’t like him). At least we know that he can talk with other countries’ leaders. Miliband is going to irritate the Trump administration.

While I think that Haigh is wholly unsuitable for office due to her dodgy past (as I wouldn't be able to work in my profession ever again if convicted of the same crime), you really can't compare a mobile phone to £5m + donations from a criminal. IMO, anyway.

Neither are suitable. Farage is less suitable.

I suppose the difference is that Haigh has a criminal conviction (and I don't think minimising it is helpful, a criminal is a criminal). Farage, as far as anyone knows is not a criminal. He may yet prove to be, but he won't be a member of the cabinet.

As I said, they're both unsuitable. Neither should be an MP. For different reasons.

Also, her conviction is now spent. I suppose it depends whether you believe petty offenders can be rehabilitated.

So no, I think she shouldn't have a role in government or as an MP, as I think having a criminal conviction should prevent you from so doing, but Farage shouldn't either.

Is it the case that she would not be able to get a job in finance or whatever for a particular period of time or would she be banned forever for this?

Also, what's your reason for saying that Nigel Farage shouldn't be allowed to be an MP?

I think it's pretty reasonable to say that an MP needs a completely clear criminal record. Unfortunately, standard of everything has fallen so low at the moment I don't think anyone's going to agree.

Because he's breached the rules and clearly has no respect for them. That is not the kind of person who should be an MP. I want our MPs to be upstanding citizens who understand their duties (including reporting donations etc).

I'm a solicitor. Haigh would've been struck off as fraud is a dishonesty crime. We aren't allowed to be convicted of dishonesty crimes, at all. I think our MPs should be held to the same standard as professionals with fiduciary responsibilities, such as solicitors.

IIRC the issue with Haigh was that she wasn't open about her conviction when given the job by Starmer. It only came out later.

I've been watching Sky news for the last hour and as a northerner I'm already over the obsession with the North/Northern Powerhouse/ Professional Northerner shtick.

I hope the government, MPs and Mayors tone that down quickly.

The breach of the rules is yet to be looked into isn’t it? And then there may be a suspension / by-election.

I'm talking about my personal viewpoint. I appreciate there's a process. I don't think Haigh, Farage or bloody Boris Johnson are / were fit to be MPs! 🤷‍♀️
