Yes, his legacy is being the most unpopular PM we've ever had. He has not left the country in a better state. They were a government of spite and division.

I’m sad their policies will leave lasting damage to schools and businesses especially but so glad he and closest allies can’t inflict anymore.

I suspect there’s more harm to come.

The economy might explode into growth and tax might start falling. But I doubt it. What I’m certain of is that no public service will improve under Burnham.

If he’s achieved so much why did they get rid of him?

What is currently going on at No 10 is a stain on the United Kingdom ! Cheering and whooping for someone given the Keys to the UK Government with 24,000 votes not 9 million or 10 million 24,000 votes ! I weep for the future of the Country, this absolute 'imposter' is running the country, the 1979 Peter Sellars Film 'Being There' kinds of sums up the promotion of Andy Burhham to Prime Minister. In the Peter Sellars Film a gardener at the White House suddenly finds himself as President !

Burnham just pledged to end rough sleeping. He made the same pledge in Greater Manchester, but completely failed.

I thought that a little odd..not the ending of homelessness but the way he announced it. My first order when I step into number 10 is to end rough sleeping..like giving an order and it magically happens. Like as you say in Manchester......

How did he go about trying that?

Obviously, no one wants anyone being homeless. But it's always complex with the remedies. So I think we've already decriminalised rough sleeping which sounds good on the surface, but the tent cities in London are increasing - presumably that's the case in other cities too. And the regular problem encampments can't be dealt with.

Homelessness does anyone have experience ?
I have personal experience of DH relative being on the streets it was very very sad

He had shichoprenia (sp) and didn't know he was on the streets with his many delusions.
His family desperatly tried to get him sectioned but he wasn't a danger to himself or anyone else apparently.
He didn't know he was vunerable on the streets and they couldn't get him sectioned.
So will Burnham change the threshold and critirea ?
Second example is local druggie ,well known on local sm ,again family day they have tried she's not friendless she can't get off the drugs . They have paid for rehab and can't anymore .

Rehab costs much more than most people can afford it's thousands a month and even then it can take several goes and when someone has no education no skills and spent most of their life on drugs and out of society they need tons of support . Again will he make rehab cheaper and easier to access ? And address the issues that lead to addiction .

Lastly the usual yearly camp has been set up in London by professional thieves what will he do about them ?

I think it's a noble aim to stop homeless sleeping but one wonders how ?

Exactly. Some areas of Manchester are bloody scary these days, Piccadilly Gardens is a particular low point which has deteriorated massively under Burham.

He set up a charity, I was reliably informed by a fan on different thread.

He also set up a cultural festival.

I'm sure he tried, but as you say it's very complicated and can't be fixed just because a PM says so. He's daft to promise that again to the whole country when he couldn't achieve it in his own city.
He gave some of his salary to homeless charities afaik. Anyone who knows Manchester will know what I mean when I point out Picadilly Gardens.

His numbers have gone up in Manchester and he's said its because no one else around them did it and he means ending homelessness / by "bringing people inside "....

That's it .

Well its still full of people slumped over on spice and being fed by charities. Its awful.

We used to have people sleeping outside the church because they didn't want to come in the church because they would have to empty their pockets of drugs and alcohol

I do wonder if he'll start saying that places of shelter have to accept everyone in no matter what. Which isn't safe for those of us volunteering. (I don't do it now but I have done it in the past).

I wouldn’t criticise him for making the end of rough sleeping a priority. He’ll fail, but it’s a humane ambition.

What's humane is what I've mentioned above he literally means housing them over night. Yes it's great but doesn't tackle why anyone is sleeping on the streets.

According to shelter 1 in 65 people are homeless in Manchester, so on a much smaller scale he was unable to solve the problem

I do remember them getting an injunction to move homeless people from outside the Midland Hotel but all that did was move rather than solve the problem

I'm really surprised he's gone for this as his first pledge. He's had a lot of criticism locally for failures on this issue.

I prefer when PMs focus on things that don’t do damage like VAT on schools or NI hikes. I cannot stand that levelling down spite and anti talent and growth.

The homeless thing felt a bit sudden and focussed in a broad speech but I don’t mind the focus there instead of Starmer type policies. He’ll be judged on whether he can do it, sounds quite hard.

ETA interesting to read what has happened locally though.
