Yes, an immediate assumption that the violence was ideological rather than plain horrific violence.
of course nobody actually knows one way or another yet.

Exactly. It was never going to be long before the conspiracy theories started. But really, the police need to be left to get on with their investigations.

Shocking either way. I never liked AW but no one deserves to die that way.

Raven08 · 10/07/2026 17:12

I hope whoever has killed AW is brought to justice soon.
AW is the 3rd MP/previous MP murdered in the past 10 years.
Simply horrific.

Yes, that article is quite clear in stating that women were indeed kept in shackles while in labour. Labour doesn't neatly begin when you arrive at the hospital...

The worst thing is that it is still happening.

Edited

I can't do links but at the time when Ann Widdecombe was accused of saying this The Mirror published an apology to her for misquoting her.

Persephonia1966 · 10/07/2026 17:11

I think you would be quite unusual in not having a problem with it to be honest

Quite. And then there's all the other unpalatable stuff. I sincerely hope her killer is caught quickly, violence against women is always unacceptable, but whitewashing the dead is not necessary or helpful. She was what she was.

DuncinToffee · 10/07/2026 17:16

Efacsen's warning was timely

The linked article was from The Independent, not the Mirror. This is not about what AW said but about what she condoned: women in labour, handcuffed in prison vans. The important thing here is the 'in labour' part. It happened, she condoned it, it is still happening and it should not be brushed under the carpet.

I felt sad when I heard she died as it's always sad when someone dies. But tempered with the fact she'd had a long life and I thought it was a natural "die of old age in your own home after a short illness". It's still sad, but it's also how most people would like to go. But now I feel really horrified by the fact she was murdered. Noone deserves that andz even though I really didn't like her politics, I don't think she was evil.

pointythings · 10/07/2026 17:23

I don't think she was evil either, but she held some very unpleasant views, did some very unpleasant things and was generally not someone I feel I need to grieve for. She should have had a safe and peaceful end, not this, and I hope her killer is caught, but she isn't the loss Bonnie Tyler was.

She never advocated for it, which is why the Mirror had to issue an apology.

All prisoners have to be handcuffed whilst being transported outside of prison for obvious security reasons. If pregnant women prisoners are allowed to give birth without being handcuffed to a prison officer then I'm not sure why people would have a problem with that.

When you can cite the statistics on the number of pregnant women who absconded from custody (with or without their newborn infant) then my problem might go away. After all, we're all evidence based here, aren't we ?

Of course she wasn't evil, why would you even need to say that. She loved animals and was strongly opposed to fox hunting. She may have had controversial views but so do many people.

I hope she finds peace with her God.

In the meantime this is just as likely to be a burglary gone wrong - a few hours in and nothing to suggest it was a targeted incident.

Not advocating for something abhorrent is not the same as speaking out against it. Which she did not do.

I do wonder if - against all historical precedents - there has been a learning from that incident, and the usual suspects have agreed not to jump in and make themselves look foolish ?????

Raven08 · 10/07/2026 17:40

@SerendipityJane
I suppose I'm assuming from the language used by the Home Sec but you are of course right, it could have been a burglary gone horribly wrong
