Anyone else’s home a complete mess after the heatwave?

We live in a really small flat with not enough storage so it’s always a job to keep clutter to a minimum. With the heatwave I’ve had my 6 year old DS home as his school was partially closed. We’ve had fans everywhere, toys out, and to top it all off the washer dryer has broken and I’ve had to hang laundry up inside the place. The heat has made me flop and my general feeling has been that I just can’t be bothered to do anything like chores! Perimenopause plus heatwave not a good combo.

I am looking around the place feeling like I’m itching to get it tidied up and cleaned but I’m still boiling, tired from rubbish sleep night after night and can’t WAIT for my DS (whom I love dearly of course) to go back to school now!

is this the situation for anyone else??

As it's so much cooler here today, I got my arse in gear to sort out all the neglected things. My house...the food shopping...my hair. Eating some proper food. And now I feel as exhausted as if it was still sweltering. I opened the door to put some recycling out, contemplated the two steps down, and shut the door again. It wasn't happening.
So I think we can all forgive ourselves for letting things go a bit.

Yes, I am finding it is the effects of accumulative heat, and poor sleeps. I think I may take some time to recover, and residual heat is left over! It has cooled off a bit this evening, but I still feel boiling!!

I've improved my game today. I properly cleaned the kitchen before / during cooking dinner, including descaling the kettle with citric acid.

I've also cleaned upstairs / the en-suite, so all the bathrooms have been cleaned properly over the weekend.

We also got 3 loads of washing done, mostly while we had half price electricity, and it's all dried as it's been lovely and windy today.

I feel a bit more on top of it all now!

Yes this was me ...no energy to do anything wow it was draining.

Yes masses of ironing to be done 😬

And clean washing to be put away !

Thank god it’s not only me who thinks there house is a mess !

Cel77 · 28/06/2026 21:55

I vacuumed this morning and broke into such a bad sweat I needed a shower after! I managed to do all.the floors and the bathroom and we're ready for work and school tomorrow, after a few sloppy days...

Lyntill · 28/06/2026 21:57

It's not gonna be hot forever so give yourselves a well deserved break. You'll catch up soon enough. The mess won't kill anyone as long as you empty the bins each evening! 😉🥰

PretendToBeToastWithMe · 28/06/2026 22:01

Yes! I’m even behind on general life admin (eg sorting things on the computer, finance stuff etc) because I just couldn’t be bothered in the heat. I’m so fed up of being behind and I can’t wait to catch up on my life jobs this week.

MerryUmberHedgehog · 28/06/2026 22:05

No but then my kids are grown up, although their bedrooms are disgusting. Leave it till its not so hot.

zigazigaaaing · 28/06/2026 22:20

Yes house was a mess last week, only just got a grip on it today when it cooled down tbh, and hot frazzled kids who are awake all hours added to the mix for sure

okroger · 29/06/2026 00:38

Nope, same as normal. I can’t leave it. Cleaned and hoovered every day as usual.

BeGutsyGoldMoose · 29/06/2026 00:49

Thank you so much for starting this thread @northlondonnotislington I suffer badly with high temp so I have done the bare minimum. We have eaten so much salad that by Friday hubby took us out for steak dinner in an air conditioned pub! It was lovely. I have cleaned what I can at 11pm at night. Today (Monday) I will catch up with everything that hasn't been done.
We should all be kind to ourselves. Life is too short. The highest temperature recorded in our house 37.5°c main bedroom on Saturday afternoon and yes windows and curtains closed but our house is brick and gets full sun morning and afternoon.

YorkieTheRabbit · 27/06/2026 21:19

I haven’t vacuumed all week, the bathrooms have only had loo cleaner squirted down, basins a quick wipe.
The kitchen is ok, worktops are clean, the dishwasher emptied every day but that’s it.

No way am I doing any more until it cools down, the bedrooms have varied from 25 to 30 degrees this week, most of downstairs has up at 36.

It’s just DP, me and our dogs, no children.

Edited

That level of housework sounds like mine every week lol!

LBFseBrom · 29/06/2026 02:44

Mine was a mess before the heatwave so no different.

LBB2020 · 29/06/2026 06:57

I managed to get most of the house cleaned and tidied yesterday, just need to mop the downstairs floors today which I will get done during my lunch break as I’m WFH today. Washing and ironing is all up to date too!

SapphireSeptember · 29/06/2026 08:02

I need to catch up on washing! I'll be doing some of that today. There's so much to do.

Mumto2at · 29/06/2026 08:58

All I really did last week was use the dishwasher, put a clothes load in and hang out first thing in the morning. Kids are young, 4 and 1 so the house and garden had toys all over, occasionally tidyed the toys as they're only in 1 room but we've so much to catch up on now it's cooled down. Was way too hot to do anything upstairs last week

emmab16 · 29/06/2026 10:24

Oh wow yes!!! It’s finally cooled down a bit but the house is still so warm. Looking forward to drying my hair sometime soon 🤣
glad to know everyone else’s houses are as bad as mine x

lovescats3 · 29/06/2026 11:56

Whole week has been a write off, in London, unbearably hot and difficult to sleep

northlondonnotislington · 29/06/2026 12:34

I’ve managed to tidy the whole place except our bedroom which is the dumping ground for all the laundry. Cleaning is next now that I can see the surfaces and the floor. I’m thinking of paying a laundry service to do a one-off the chip away at it!

@northlondonnotislington well done! I too have ploughed through the tidy up. I have cleaned the bathroom and hoovered. I had to have a bath after I had finished as I had got so sweaty 🤣 I plan to make home-made pizza later with a side salad for dinner. Luckily the weather looks settled over the next couple of days, so I will get through the washing.

DinoLil · 29/06/2026 17:17

👋👋👋
That's all I have to say...!

Ilovegermany · 29/06/2026 21:44

I thought I had cooled down the house this morning. All windows were open. However I was WFH and work took over and it was 35° this afternoon. With all the blinds down the house feels dark and impossible to deal with.

ALittleDropOfRain · 29/06/2026 21:46

Yep. Average temp of 38 here from 7am to about 9pm (not UK). We tidied DS‘ bedroom yesterday and dripped bucketloads of sweat. I haven’t dared go into our bedroom to sort and hang the washing, I can’t cope with the heat that long. And the house is pitch black as the shutters are down all day to keep out the worst. DS and I had cold footbaths on the weekend and used the soapy water to give the kitchen floor an emergency mop. Have been going into work every day (AC in the office) as just can’t survive at home. We‘re all sleeping in the basement guest room, DS on an airbed. There’s cobwebs and dust on the landing from opening the loft hatch and climbing up to force open the attic window to let out some of the heat late at night. The bath toys from DS‘ cold baths are still all over the place. There are piles of clothes and swimming stuff we‘ve been able to wash, hang out to dry at 6am, but not actually put away (I‘ve been at the open air swimming pool every evening). DS is carting frozen drinks, a desk fan, a cool
pack and a cool bag to school every day (upto 44 degrees in their glass fronted primary school). This all needs refreezing or charging every evening.

There is sun cream on everything.

Madness.
