Anyone else’s home a complete mess after the heatwave?

We live in a really small flat with not enough storage so it’s always a job to keep clutter to a minimum. With the heatwave I’ve had my 6 year old DS home as his school was partially closed. We’ve had fans everywhere, toys out, and to top it all off the washer dryer has broken and I’ve had to hang laundry up inside the place. The heat has made me flop and my general feeling has been that I just can’t be bothered to do anything like chores! Perimenopause plus heatwave not a good combo.

I am looking around the place feeling like I’m itching to get it tidied up and cleaned but I’m still boiling, tired from rubbish sleep night after night and can’t WAIT for my DS (whom I love dearly of course) to go back to school now!

is this the situation for anyone else??

@OnTheBoardwalkdo you have an outdoor space you could dry but choose not to?
Line dry is free and much better for your clothes.

PersephoneParlormaid · 28/06/2026 08:45

I refused to do cleaning during the heatwave, it will get done next week.

MrsClattenburg · 28/06/2026 08:47

I always do the weekly clean on a Friday but have done the bare minimum recently. I can't not hoover (hate bits on my feet) but dusting...? That has had to wait.

Laundry has been done, we have a garden and it seems like the first item has dried by the time I've pegged out the last! I actually did a basket full of ironing at 10pm last night (rock 'n roll!) as we go away on Tuesday and I need to get packing 😊

Yes not hoovered all week 🙈 I suspect a lot are in a similar boat it’s just been such hard work even cooking hasn’t it

coolcahuna · 28/06/2026 08:57

Yep our house is pretty messy and I've just left it to be honest! Did a token few bits yesterday

ButterflyLounge · 28/06/2026 08:59

Yes! We’re lucky that we have a robot vacuum/mop so the floors aren’t so bad (when the kids haven’t littered it in toys) but I have cooling towels everywhere, jugs and glasses/cups from multiple drinks out, just ‘stuff’ everywhere.. and it’s been too hot to do a proper tidy up. Thankfully we managed to get back on top of it last night as it was cooler.. and we feel relatively back to normal this morning.

LittleGreenShoots · 28/06/2026 09:10

Oh i'm glad its not just me. Hubby has been away all week on a business trip and I have avoided using anything that would heat the place up further. The washing/ laundry/tidying is so very backed up but we've just been in survival mode with having lots of showers.

SometimesTheIntrusiveThoughtsWin · 28/06/2026 09:21

House and garden an absolute sty.

Tackling today. Starting with the ironing mountain, then mow and weed. Just off to give DS1 the good news he needs to get up walk the dog and then hoover.

NoWordForFluffy · 28/06/2026 09:25

We are trying to get back to normal. DH vacuumed yesterday and I cleaned the bottom and middle floors (other than the kitchen, but I did give the surfaces and cupboard doors a wipe over while washing up) at 9pm when DH took the dog out. Today I need to do the top floor and kitchen.

OnTheBoardwalk · 28/06/2026 09:25

@HortiGal i (unfortunately in this weather) have a huge south facing garden. I dont know why I’m so against line drying (spider willies and being darked on aside)

I know I should do it!

Lentilcakes · 28/06/2026 09:26

Yes! I have barely done anything apart from cleaning the kitchen (was gross) early on Weds - and a rudimentary bathroom wipe over and essential vacuuming (we have a cat).
Wadhing was good as hung everything outside so it dried within an hour or so.
i was ill on Friday (def heat related. Was prob the hottest day so far), so got nothing done then - had to sit on my bum all day.
It’s cooled off massively today so will be washing hair (desperate but couldn’t get the blow dryer out at 30 degrees in the bedroom), putting laundry away etc.
DS has just finished uni so is now home and will o doubt create more mess - although bonus he’s now house trained so he’ll be helping me out!

springintospring26 · 28/06/2026 09:28

My sofa has been mine and my dogs bed all week. My room is like an oven as in the attic. I’m still lying here among sheets spread everywhere. Haven’t cleaned all week ( but that’s nothing new!). No excuse not to tidy up today as it’s actually cooler with a breeze but I’m just going to carry on pretending it’s a heatwave and I can’t move

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 28/06/2026 09:28

Yes! We cleaned our house yesterday as it was cooler and it looks so much better now. I couldn't believe what a mess it was when we just didn't touch it.

SqueakyFromme · 28/06/2026 09:28

Mine is okay but the shower screen is awful, (hard water area) as it’s being used so many times a day despite being squeeged off but I don’t have the energy to do it properly, it’s a LOT cooler today though, cloudy and breezy.

we can get round to these jobs as soon as it is comfortable to do so.

Atleastitsnotsunstroke · 28/06/2026 09:29

Yes I've had food poisoning in the mix. Only clean room is the bathroom. I'm going to try and blitz it today.

MajorSamanthaCarter · 28/06/2026 09:38

No, I cleaned and tidied as usual, I can't bear a grubby house.

Marvellousmeadows · 28/06/2026 09:39

Glad I wasn’t the only one, managed to do loads of washing but waiting in the spare room to be put away . Even watering the garden was a massive task, despite the constant watering still managed to lose a few plants . Absolutely dreading another heatwave like that !

AllTheTreesOfTheField · 28/06/2026 09:49

Very high temps 6th/7th July forecast too. URGH. Little bit of 'catch up' cleaning daily this week!

JadeOP · 28/06/2026 09:51

I was wondering the same about others today!!!

Main areas of the house pretty clean, as I haven't been doing 'proper' cooking and just been cold food or freezer dinners.

Room is an ABSOLUTE tip though. Feel disgusting both in my house and wherever I go due to this heat

Whataflippincircus · 28/06/2026 09:53

Yes it’s been too hot to do anything.

Yes I'm hoping to straighten everything out ready for the next blast

northlondonnotislington · 28/06/2026 10:30

Thank goodness it wasn’t just me! Feel much better for knowing others have responded similarly!!

I have booked a cleaner for Monday afternoon, but between now and then I have a LOT of tidying to get done so that she can get in and start cleaning! 🥵

Done all the bedding, hoovered, mowed the lawn and washing outside. Now onto tidying and rubbish collection!! Beds are back where they belong.

I am also getting it ready for the next heatwave coming in a few days!

Oh goodness poor you. I was dreading on of us getting sick in this heat and needing to go to the bathroom in the night. I hope you feel better

December2025 · 28/06/2026 12:44

My house has been kind of kept up on in the moving clutter to bins if I don't put the washing away it's been tidily put to one side in an IKEA bag etc so not done a lot but tried to do what I can my mental health won't survive otherwise.
