Anyone else’s home a complete mess after the heatwave?

northlondonnotislington · 27/06/2026 21:06

We live in a really small flat with not enough storage so it’s always a job to keep clutter to a minimum. With the heatwave I’ve had my 6 year old DS home as his school was partially closed. We’ve had fans everywhere, toys out, and to top it all off the washer dryer has broken and I’ve had to hang laundry up inside the place. The heat has made me flop and my general feeling has been that I just can’t be bothered to do anything like chores! Perimenopause plus heatwave not a good combo.

I am looking around the place feeling like I’m itching to get it tidied up and cleaned but I’m still boiling, tired from rubbish sleep night after night and can’t WAIT for my DS (whom I love dearly of course) to go back to school now!

is this the situation for anyone else??

I don't get many hours at work now, I worked on Wednesday and travelled to see DS2 yesterday, apart from that I'm so hot and sweaty I'm sitting around drinking iced drinks. I've actually never sweated so much.

Allonthesametrain · 28/06/2026 18:09

I've kept it up by doing it slowly at intervals with fans on and instead of a full hoover a hand held one for bits. Got loads of washing done as dry within a couple of hours outside. Slow and steady is the only way in this heat 🥵

MamaDemi · 28/06/2026 18:09

Mine isn’t this bad but I tried ironing last week and I thought I was going to faint. Thankfully I managed to get a lot done. I don’t know what I was thinking 😅

Oh yes...indoor cats so windows only open on the latch as well and DD came home from
university with all her stuff mid week and have now gone off to do a work placement in London so there is stuff everywhere.

Tbf I should have done some serious decluttering before she came back but it's been too hot and my job is mental so just haven't had the bandwidth. I've also been prioritising the garden as have just started growing my own veg this year.

We're going to start tackling it when she comes home next weekend.

House is an absolute mess and I couldn’t care less. The kitchen has had a wipe down and the bathroom isn’t too bad so we are unlikely to cause a biohazard.
My mother has gone insane at the joy of ‘pegging out’ weather, whereas the washing pile in my house could probably pack itself and fly to Majorca. Does a twister ‘with real fruit juices’ count as five-a-day?

rosie1873 · 28/06/2026 18:13

I feel for you, especially with your little 'un to care for too. I am in a fortunate position because I am retired with my son staying for about a year before going abroad. I have always been an early bird and with retirement I have been getting up at 4.30am as that's when I am awake and ready, so do my cleaning. I too live in a flat, 2-bed and portion tasks off so I only do so much on cleaning days. Tuesdays I keep for doing batch cooking, bread or anything else like that and Saturday and Sundays are free days. Therefore, it is cool enough on a morning to do it, admittedly I do not put as much into it as it is hotter but I just manage. Kitchen faces North which I am thankful for, so that's not so bad. I have always felt ill with the heat and looking forward to the Winter. Those with children have my admiration as it must be a very difficult time so Good Luck and God Bless.

Nah, normal here. It’s been hot and sweaty, but still needed doing, so just did it.

Me too. I have one of those neck fans, wonderful. All housework, laundry etc, done as usual. I couldn't leave things to pile up, drive me insane. I am a little old when it comes to my home

Planting · 28/06/2026 18:17

Im a minimalist so I dont have much anyway.
I have kept up with the cleaning I live alone so not much to do.

However I did have to brave the heat to hang the laundry outside, as its far to hot to use the dryer.
Part from that spotless.

Yeah mines been a bomb!

I wiped sinks and toilets in anticipation on Monday, bath hasn't been done, it's ok but needs doing. Downstairs was hoovered Tuesday morning. Since then I've only managed two lots of washing and dusting two rooms. I feel like I need to get back into normal routine, but in retrospect house isn't that bad - we had unexpected visitors this evening and it didn't matter. Clean bedding went on on Monday, but feel I really want to change that tomorrow as it's been so hot at night, even just sleeping on top of quilt. DH doesn't seem to care, he's been fed and has enough clean clothes, so no pressure.

Edited

Your last line….does your DH just sit around whilst you wait on him hand and foot then? Thank goodness he’s not had to feed himself or put a wash on, god forbid

Bery23 · 28/06/2026 18:25

Same. House is looking awful. Everywhere is dusty and grimey. But as I'm the only one in my house that can see dirt it's not that much of a problem. Cooler today and I've changed the beds and done the laundry. I have a cleaning App that normally helps me to keep on top of it all but it's just tormenting me with lists of actions outstanding. There you go, it will eventually get sorted when energy levels return to normal.

LilWoosmum82 · 28/06/2026 18:25

Yep! Its gonna need a deep clean

Okiedokie123 · 28/06/2026 18:26

Mines a tip. Plus today although its cooler I havent really been able to keep myself awake all day. Catching up on a weeks lost sleep. Whether Ill be able to sleep tonight is debateable........ I may up tidying up the house instead!

Pickybitsheatwave · 28/06/2026 18:27

Haha I was going to post this the other day! We did tiny bits everyday, the rest of the day was spent fanning ourselves and complaining. Big clean tomorrow when kids are at school.

Mylittlepea · 28/06/2026 18:28

Glad it’s not just me…house an absolute state.
boiling point at work, but also been a full time job keeping house cool, freezing bottles of water, opening/shutting windows etc
normal service might resume next week

Lovelynames123 · 28/06/2026 18:31

I was already behind as worked a 7 day week the week before the heatwave! Done oodles of washing but only put 2 weeks worth away this weekend! Cut the grass today, had an hour of us all cleaning yesterday so now feel like I'm on top of it after 2 weeks of mess

OnlyTomSaidThat · 28/06/2026 18:32

In times of stress I revert back to the newborn days mantra 'everybody fed, nobody dead'.

Takes a load off. Although I sent DC and DH out this morning so I could spend a couple of hours catching up on clutter cleaning no it's cooler.

HappiestSleeping · 28/06/2026 18:32

@northlondonnotislington definitely not just you. I look after dogs, so need to keep on top of cleaning otherwise it runs away from me.

Well, last week, it ran away. Way the fuck over there, and over the hill.

Managed to get 4 loads of washing done, bed changed, swept carpets (thank heavens for rubber brooms). Today got the lawn mowed, hoovered and mopped floors.

It is minging still, but not as badly as last week. I have another load of dogs turning up this week, so who knows when I'll get up to date. Depends on who is afraid of the vacuum 🤣

Minasama · 28/06/2026 18:32

Yes because it was too hot for the cleaner to come!

magentbobble · 28/06/2026 18:34

Yeah its a bit messy, it was too hot to do much my last free day which was Thursday so I will tackle it tomorrow! I also usually bake a cake or pastry for the weekend but it was too hot for that too but we've just had ice cream instead!

Bridesmaidorexfriend · 28/06/2026 18:36

Yes deffo, did a little earlier between the two of us, but did not keep on top of cleaning or laundry last week

Raven08 · 28/06/2026 18:38

I've hoovered today, done a bit of ironing and lots of washing on the line. First housework I've done since Thursday...I felt really unwell with the heat on friday 😕

WestwardHo1 · 28/06/2026 18:39

This is reading like another planet for those of us in the cooler far south west and Scotland. Sounds like such enervating heat and humidity. Here we have had near constant wind and the proper heat only lasted two days.

Amira83 · 28/06/2026 18:39

YES me. I'm behind on everything becos of the heatwave, it affects some ppl mentally, I just couldnt function properly. I actually felt like I was having a mental breakdown. Im autistic but I know non autistic ppl who were struggling a lot with it. I just hope there is not going to be another one this year. Next year bfore summer il have to get a portable air conditioning unit just becos it was so bad this year. I have no idea how to install the vent / tube thing but that's a problem for next year. Let's hope there's no more heatwaves this year.

Barney16 · 28/06/2026 18:43

I gave up when it got to 30 degrees. All I could do was wander about moaning about how hot I was. House is in a state of complete devestation.
