You probably don’t own a small business like a pub or shop with spiralling costs. None of these measures help people like that

@derxa re: above what you like to see done to help?

TemperanceWest · 23/06/2026 12:48

@placemats thanks for the new thread ❤️

Gosh you move very fast. I missed the last 50 posts. Was disappointed I couldn't suggest "Tears for Keir - Andys not the messiah , he's a naughty boy" For thread title!
Thanks for the new thread @placemats

Vat could be cut in half for hospitality for a start. No one in their right mind would start up a pub or restaurant business right now. I know he’s hated on here but Jeremy Clarkson has shown you can’t make any money. He’s going to put up prices.

You’ll doubtless approve of Burnham then.

Top chefs back Andy Burnham for prime minister to cut VAT on hospitality

Tom Kerridge says ‘whole of hospitality’ should get behind Burnham who has called for VAT cut from 20% to 10%

I do approve. KS ploughed on taking more and more of people’s money. Ideology over ordinary people’s lives.

Ordinary people’s lives were I proved by many of the changes. I agree hospitality is in a bind, but giving people more disposable income (via eg childcare changes and so on) will also help there. The fact is that all the infrastructure of the country is in a mess from 14 years of underinvestment and asset stripping. Money has to come from somewhere.

Efacsen · 23/06/2026 13:08

Nice little headline from Guardian - as if

Farage claims 'no one cares' about his undisclosed £5m donation from crpto billionaire, 'apart from media'*

Thanks for the new threads, @placemats !

@cardibach you are so not a newcomer.

Cat tax in the form of Cannelloni striking a pose, and extra moth tax just because it's called an Old Lady and that's adorable.

Thanks for stepping in, placemats.

This thing (cordyline australis) is flowering for a second year running. Last year's flower skeleton is still there.

They don't tend to flower often, up here. Apparently, a lot of the ones that have thrived for years on the south coast are now rotting due to extremes of wetness and drought.

I'm just following the assertion that the leader of the opposition is secretly responsible for all the bad things the party in power does.

derxa · 23/06/2026 13:09

Yes from hard working people.

How do you define hard working people? Because most people who work are hard working. So are people who may not be in employment. Single parents working hard to parent alone. Disabled people working hard to just keep going in the face of a hostile enviroment. Their carers. Retired people who have worked hard and some of whom may be now caring for grand children so oarents can work. People who volunteer. This list is not exhaustive.
