Thanks for stepping in, placemats.

This thing (cordyline australis) is flowering for a second year running. Last year's flower skeleton is still there.

They don't tend to flower often, up here. Apparently, a lot of the ones that have thrived for years on the south coast are now rotting due to extremes of wetness and drought.

Lovely! I have a couple of these and one has flowered in the past but not this year.

Mine succumbed a couple of years ago to very heavy snow falls and a week of temperatures never getting above zero. A sapling has appeared.

In remembrance of the freezing cold, I'm enjoying the hot weather.

Thank you for the new thread, @placemats, the last thread certainly filled quickly in the end. 😀

How do you define hard working people? Because most people who work are hard working. So are people who may not be in employment. Single parents working hard to parent alone. Disabled people working hard to just keep going in the face of a hostile enviroment. Their carers. Retired people who have worked hard and some of whom may be now caring for grand children so oarents can work. People who volunteer. This list is not exhaustive.

It means people who get a salary at the end of the month or those who run a business. People who work to have enough money to support their families.

Thanks for the new thread @placemats.
Cucumber tax from the greenhouse provided.

Yes from hard working people.

Who do you define as ‘hard working’? And where would you like it to come from? I’d favour more taxes on the wealthy (Starmer’s government made a start on this but there were lots of objections).

Thanks for the new thread.

You probably don’t own a small business like a pub or shop with spiralling costs. None of these measures help people like that.

I do own a small business that is dying on its feet because Brexit destroyed my European trade. Selling abroad as a small business was completely fucked over by the moronic lying bastards in the Tory party who promised bread and circuses.

Thanks for new thread @placemats tax paid with a picture of the cat from a couple of weeks ago when the patio was cool enough to lie on as he is sensibly staying out of the sun and out of sight today

Judging from MN Burnham has announced an awful lot of policy in the last 24 hours.

Tax. Pyramidal orchid.

So carers aren't hard working. Wow. Just wow. Saving the tax payer tens of thousands every year for a pittance, but not hard working. That's a horrific thing to say.

This one is in the jungle of a garden next door. It's probably in a state of panic as the extent of anything being done to the once pristine garden is the building management company (absentee landlord) whizzing a strimmer round once a year, or less.

Spandauer · 23/06/2026 14:05

Thanks for the new thread.

Tax from this year's Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
Pic1 Thus Regard Palmerston £25,000
Pic 2 Tailchaser 1 £38,400 (edition of 6)
(Quite a number of cat themed exhibits this year).

MN has taught me that lots of people don't think teachers are 'hard working people.'

That is exactly what DH is doing, right now. I'm stuck at home, doing the caring thing and endless fucking laundry.

Carers allowance is 40 pence an hour.

Carers allowance is 40 pence an hour.

And apparently we don't work hard enough for that.

And is taxable. So less than that for many.

Over half the carers I know spend more than they get from Carers Allowance on their charge.

Go ! Carol !

We can't be definitive, but I wonder how much her highlighting the .... interesting ... views of a regular Reform supporter impacted on the outcome.

Ah. Yes 🙄
I'm off to Rio with my ill gotten carers allowance!
I can't find a pt job to top up the CA so I'm trapped - like so many others - in carer poverty.
@derxaonly thinks farmers work hard. No one else counts, and certainly not carers/teachers/nurses/drs/retail workers.
I - rather foolishly - thought that covid might make people realise - in a functioning society - how dependant we are on each other.
Farmers voted en masse for brexshit. As did the fishermen.
We tried. We were called all sorts of names. I seem to recall being called a traitor and to leave if I didn't like it.
I'm encouraging my dc to leave the uk. If I was younger I certainly would.

The cynic in me suggests that one reason is that Carers Allowance isn't more generous is to avoid a flight of capital to Switzerland. At least until we have our own assisted dying laws up & running.

Raven08 · 23/06/2026 14:33

I did try working a while ago.
I explained the rules, that I couldn't work over x hours.
They made a mistake and I was paid £4 more than I should have been one week. I had to have an "interview" with the DWP.
They made me feel like a criminal, even though it wasnt my error.
But Mr Farage and his £5mil "donation" is fine
This country is fucked.
