FSM isn't a proxy for class very satisfactorily. It indicates poverty but excludes many non claimants. It's more the way they didn't separate other groups so compared them to all minority ethnic kids, for example and, almost certainly deliberately, didn't look at gender. This can give the impression to some that whiteness is the disadvantage and, as MN are probably saying minority ethnic groups have leapfrogged 'unjustly'. This is not true if you break down ethnic groups or if you look at eg Bangladeshi girls. It also seems to have excluded travellers. The report said white FSM kids were the 'largest group' of underachievers. Well, obviously. White kids tend to achieve poorly, despite relative racial privilege whereas Black boys for example face institutional racism.
Also, it ignores that, despite this, white working class boys will still on average have higher lifetime earnings than working class girls of all groups and many working class boys from minority ethnic groups. They are actually the only group who do better by not going to university.
But it's OK because Reform will sort it by making everything worse for minority groups so then , hey presto, the white kids won't have to improve to not be bottom!
All the BBC reports looked at boys. I am worried about girls here.
Some of the suggestions are sound , that said, and should help all disadvantaged groups.
