I have a lot of opinions about that report and its dodgy use of aggregated data but am not even going to glance at that thread.

The main takeaway from the report seemed to be the differences between class. I know it's hard to tell class but they seemed to be basing it on free school meals which is probably a good indicator. If it leads to more effort to support left behind kids, and to improve access to work then it's a good thing.

Piggywaspushed · 29/06/2026 21:54

FSM isn't a proxy for class very satisfactorily. It indicates poverty but excludes many non claimants. It's more the way they didn't separate other groups so compared them to all minority ethnic kids, for example and, almost certainly deliberately, didn't look at gender. This can give the impression to some that whiteness is the disadvantage and, as MN are probably saying minority ethnic groups have leapfrogged 'unjustly'. This is not true if you break down ethnic groups or if you look at eg Bangladeshi girls. It also seems to have excluded travellers. The report said white FSM kids were the 'largest group' of underachievers. Well, obviously. White kids tend to achieve poorly, despite relative racial privilege whereas Black boys for example face institutional racism.

Also, it ignores that, despite this, white working class boys will still on average have higher lifetime earnings than working class girls of all groups and many working class boys from minority ethnic groups. They are actually the only group who do better by not going to university.

But it's OK because Reform will sort it by making everything worse for minority groups so then , hey presto, the white kids won't have to improve to not be bottom!

All the BBC reports looked at boys. I am worried about girls here.

Some of the suggestions are sound , that said, and should help all disadvantaged groups.

Piggywaspushed · 29/06/2026 21:55

The direction of travel does a bit seem to be 'university isn't for working ckass kids'. They'll have to be careful about how that plays out.

I do wish MNHQ would zap the anti immigration threads as soon as they start. They’re just an excuse for an outpouring of xenophobic hate. The current one is disgusting.

The usual suspects enjoyed it so much they have started part 2.

I don't understand her at all. It is very odd how she has morphed into her current persona. I would like to see Burnham get shot of her.

The Home Office is a cult. Very few ministers emerge as they went in.

Maybe Roy Jenkins ? The last uncaptured Home Secretary ?

Any suggestions for the new title? Maybe ‘Will there be a Larry of the North?’ Given all the frothing over having a government office in Manchester. Not sure what language would be appropriate though.

InMySpareTime · 30/06/2026 16:00

Would Larry of the North be a cat, or a whippet?

Lol cat language? Will thar be Larry ov teh North?

Saucery · 30/06/2026 16:49

May I humbly suggest that the ‘of’ and the ‘the’ be phonetically joined into ‘ovt’? It pronounces more authentically.
Will th bi Larry ovt North?

Raven08 · 30/06/2026 17:01

Apropo of nothing, my cousin (or rather, his dog..) is the parish ferreter.
I believe a very small stipend of beer at a local pub is provided for duties.

Hmm. As a Northerner myself I'm feeling a bit like this is taking the piss. Would prefer not to have that kind of thread title.

I noticed the white working class threads. I also noticed that there does not appear to be any threads on Baroness Amos' reports into maternity care on MN, specifically none on the feminism board.

I refer you to my point a while back that MN is not a simulacrum of the UK. Doubly so in FWR.

PickAChew · 30/06/2026 17:10

Yes, you'd think MNHQ would be all over that report, considering their very recent campaign.

Very true.

@BIWI we wouldn't want to upset you or anyone so happy to go with something else. I can't think of anything, though!

BIWI · 30/06/2026 17:16

Me neither! My only thought was to use the opening line of an A. A. Milne poem - "They're changing guard at Buckingham Westminster palace" but I don't think you can format test in the thread title.

... and also not that imaginative!

Saucery · 30/06/2026 17:16

I think the Larry angle makes it not piss-takey, but agree if it annoys anyone on here, it’s best avoided.
After all, we don’t know which Northern variant Andy Burnham is going to adopt yet 😉

I live close to Manchester, 45 minutes by train to Piccadilly station. I agree 💯
