It's not much of chat topic but Tesco just cancelled my delivery due in 1 hour - 'because of the severe weather'.

For those who do get a supermarket delivery today, please think about offering the driver some water. I gave a Sainsburys driver a cold bottle today whilst he was taking his break behind his van to get some shade. Sainsbury's vans do not have aircon.
Today local supermarkets were closed due to flooding, as well as transport disruptions, due to last night's storm.
We expect disruption in winter due to snow, but it is a new normal to have issues in the summer.

Pansypots · 23/06/2026 17:28

I gave my Amazon driver a couple of cans of pepsi and an ice lolly today because he looks like he was melting.

Not everyone can "suck it up" unfortunately. Some of us really can't work /attend a hospital appointment if we over heat because the consequences for our health are too severe.

Even a few steps outside and I am losing the ability to speak and swallow in this heat . Staying cool isn't a " nice to have" it's essential

Ive just come back from doing the food shop I just made it to the loo in time. The heat exacerbates my bowel issues Busses here arent air conditioned So they nearly ended up with my interior all over their interior Unfortunately there are companies and employers who really would risk a Cat 1 hazard rather than put air con in

I am surprised Tesco cancelled the shopping delivery. I use Tesco too. As others have said, their vans have air con. I would’ve thought these are one of the jobs that can still be carried out safely in this heat. I’d be interested to know their rationale. It’s not exactly 40/50 degrees out there…

As as been posted above, it could just be as simple as schools closing and parents, who are also supermarket delivery drivers, having to stay at home to look after children. It doesn’t have to be within Tescos control, though not having aircon in a delivery van does seem penny pinching at its extreme.

Adding an eccentric piece of historical fact, Franco during his reign in Spain, introduced the Siesta to protect farm and manual labourers from extreme heat at midday and allowed civil servants to clock off at 3 pm and go home, habits which persist today.

It depends on vehicle that they have
If they are electris then they struggle in normal weather to provide the enargy to power the fridges and freezers.

😂

I'm so sorry, it's so sobering how many different conditions are made so much worse by heat

How did disabled people manage before home delivery vans.

Here just eat app I could get a delivery from the co-op for limited produce a nice man delivered it. I was on crutches post hip surgery so was very grateful.

So if anyone is worried about elderly parents. Just Eat is available in rural areas.

We had to shop more often.

We had to hope there would be a disabled parking space free.

We made decisions about what we took in to the house and what was left in the car. So in this weather meat and dairy would come in but vegetables / fruit / tins etc would spend a few hours - possibly overnight in the car.

MoonlightMemories · 24/06/2026 06:13

I know it's going to be very hot, especially on Friday, but that is my only day off (after payday) in the next 5 days for me, so I'm going to be a bit stuffed if my online shop end up cancelling my slot (which has been booked ages before the heatwave was forecast). I don't drive and I won't be able to get one at the weekend or pop out (working nights then). I guess I'll just have to see what happens....

If our government suggested that here in response to the heat, the 76 crew would be extremely dismissive.

“This is what happens when you elect socialists”
”They’re in the hock of the unions”
“No wonder productivity is so low”
”People just don’t seem resilient any more”
”What do they think people in hot countries do? Just nap through summer?” (Kinda, yes, but don’t let that stop your dribble)
”It’s just summer. They should enjoy it! Give them an ice lolly!”
”Just when you thought The Blob couldn’t get any lazier”

Imagine Farage’s outrage! Sitting on BBC Breakfast giving a remote interview from the air conditioned kitchen of his French farmhouse…

They have aircon AND freezers and fridges in their vehicles. How on earth is this affecting deliveries?

No Aircon in our vans (Tesco Driver)

Njb2026 · 24/06/2026 14:23

Mumteedum · 23/06/2026 08:12

Bit surprised. Thought they'd have Aircon in the vehicles and they're not out of them for long.

Lots of people who have to work no matter what.

Not sure I agree with cancelling shopping at pate notice like that but it's nice to hear about staff being looked after if it's needed.

Not out in them for long? 9 hours per day, no air conditioning, carrying your shopping to your door, sometimes upstairs to flats etc. it is way too hot to be out in. My cab hit 40° yesterday

Rondayvu · 24/06/2026 14:23

@Njb2026 yes I have been quoted about 13 times about the same thing. I think i shall delete my post now lol

I do that too. Last year my delivery guy was pouring with sweat and looked bright red, I was worried about him and offered a glass of water. He asked if I could actually tip out his warm water bottle and fill it up with cold, he was absolutely thrilled and said no one had ever done that for him before. Now I keep a few bottled waters in the fridge.

justasking111 · 24/06/2026 16:15

Amazon have some deal on this week. After reading pp saying how much they were suffering delivering. I've postponed my order until the weather breaks.

Is it?

Ladybyrd · 24/06/2026 17:00

If they shut the schools then parents have to be off - perhaps that’s part of it.

sashh · 25/06/2026 03:01

I had a Sainsbury's order yesterday. I asked the driver if his van has air con, and yes it had. He also said they drive longer distances than Tesco.

I handed over drinks anyway. Even with air con it has got to be hard work, well it is anyway but the heat doesn't help.

RVectensian · 25/06/2026 07:38

Our Tesco delivery came yesterday with no issues.

This was our heat map (we are in Northwood) 🥵

I forgot to ask the driver about Aircon (though I'm sure a driver we had last year said the vans didn't have it, which surprised me as most modern vehicles do) but did give him a can of pepsi for the road.

We are melting. Have a few fans moving the air around, and went paddleboarding and swimming for a few hours from around 5pm which helped.

RVectensian · 25/06/2026 07:38

Ugh, forgot the map
