Tesco cancelled my delivery due to severe weather

It's not much of chat topic but Tesco just cancelled my delivery due in 1 hour - 'because of the severe weather'.

OP posts:

Cancelling your shopping with an hour’s notice is not on, OP. If Tesco’s have made the decision not to deliver during hot weather, they should at least turn it into click and collect - leaving people high and dry at such short notice is really not OK.

Well in that case these same people can just go in and shop.

I started that thread. 100% they should be off if they’re not essential workers. Just like Covid.

But essential workers can suck up the heat, that non essential workers can’t cope with?

People working from home because it’s too hot to travel- goooood. Tesco cancelling deliveries because they lift heavy things in extreme heat- baaaaaaad.

Different people on Mumsnet. Different opinions.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 23/06/2026 11:42

Buy a freezer and keep it stocked up.

NagathaCrispy · 23/06/2026 11:44

Tesco delivery driver here, apparently it's all about being able to keep the on-board fridge and freezer down to temperature for the duration of the run.

TheDaringFawn · 23/06/2026 11:46

Mumteedum · 23/06/2026 08:12

Bit surprised. Thought they'd have Aircon in the vehicles and they're not out of them for long.

Lots of people who have to work no matter what.

Not sure I agree with cancelling shopping at pate notice like that but it's nice to hear about staff being looked after if it's needed.

I just got tesco delivery, ne england.
. He said no aircon in van!

All of our drivers don’t like the new electric vans because they don’t keep their temperatures like the old ones. Net zero is all good until people can’t get their shopping delivered.

Whosthetabbynow · 23/06/2026 11:50

I’ll bet you a pound to a penny our bin men are either very late or don’t come at all tomorrow. They’ve done that before in hot weather.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 23/06/2026 11:51

I've just had to do an unplanned online delivery (car temporarily out of action) but off the back of this thread I've picked a 7-8am slot when hopefully the temperature won't be too high and will offer the driver a cold can of pop. I always assumed the cabs would have ac and am genuinely surprised that they aren't.

yonem · 23/06/2026 11:52

@Whosthetabbynow ours have moved the collection to much earlier in the morning (starting 5 instead of 7). Better early than late as it’s so hot in the afternoons

It all seems quite hysterical, from reading MN. Is there rolling news about it in the UK? It’s going to be hot & stormy this week. People are really getting whipped up over what the kids are wearing to school etc…

Yes typical BBC ramping up the hysteria.

ThejoyofNC · 23/06/2026 08:10

Well the weather is severe and you'd complain if all your shopping arrived inedible wouldn't you?

They have chillers in the vans!

The point is reduce pressure on services.

I don't think it's acceptable to cancel deliveries due to hot weather unless they are able to guarantee priority delivery for vulnerable people. I have two elderly relatives who absolutely rely on their online deliveries and it wouldn't be ok to just cancel them.

Maybe that’s what they’re doing giving priority to vulnerable customers!

CheeryOnion · 23/06/2026 11:58

Chatting to my Tesco delivery driver last week - their vans don't even have air-con.
I have him an ice-cream, he was most grateful!

SallySall · 23/06/2026 11:33

You do realise that huge huge numbers of people do not get paid if they don’t work right? Personally I find it so weird that so many people on here expect to get paid when not working for so many different reasons!

It’s not weird. Italy have suspended work for people who work outside or have particularly hot jobs and the workers get paid 80% of their normal wage.

Livelaughlurgy · 23/06/2026 12:02

I would be shocked if it's a decision they've made. I'd assume it's been made for them either by the specific van breaking down/being unsuitable or the driver calling in sick/not being able to complete the shift.

Allisnotlost1 · 23/06/2026 12:02

icybreezefromanairconditioner · 23/06/2026 08:45

This. And not just elderly people, lots of people with health conditions too. I'm basically confined to our air-conditioned downstairs till the weather changes. Thankfully DH is at home so can go to the shops if needed

It’s possible that the OP’s driver also has a health condition that means they can’t work in extreme heat.

For all of those concerned about elderly or unwell friends and neighbours: a heatwave is a community event. Check on those who might need help.

The air on wasn’t working in the van carrying last Saturday’s delivery. I filled his water bottle, his only help.
That was Tesco. Maybe it’s a trend or maybe they’re pulling vans affected.

Toomanydogs · 23/06/2026 12:05

I'm a Tesco delivery driver, and though some stores have vans with air con, none of our fleet have it so it can get incredibly hot even with the windows down in the cab! It's also very hard to keep the fridge and freezers down at the required safe temperatures for food when it's excessively hot outside. Can imagine it's very frustrating having your orders cancelled though.

Surely people don’t let their supplies get so low that a delivery cancellation is an emergency? How about just topping up before you run out it you are unwilling to go to an actual shop.

Im failing to see where the OP declared this an emergency?

I've got to get an early train tomorrow and have just seen that 7/10 of them have been cancelled, including mine, again due to the weather. The forecast is 29 degrees and it'll be around 25 when I wanted to travel. I know that tracks can buckle etc but really?

Yes, really. It's not just the tracks. The overhead power lines can sag, and the ground underneath the tracks can contract. But the tracks are the biggest problem. It isn't that they buckle so much as expand and disrupt the sensors that keep the trains running a safe distance apart.

I am really not surprised that they are being cautious given what happened in Bedford. :-(

Our railway was built in Victorian times and too much of the original infrastructure remains.

Rondayvu · 23/06/2026 08:13

They have aircon AND freezers and fridges in their vehicles. How on earth is this affecting deliveries?

Fridges and freezers work by transferring heat from inside, to outside. If outside is very hot, they have to work extremely hard to do this - and this leads to failure. I'm really not surprised deliveries are being cancelled, it's v hard to keep a fleet of refrigerated vehicles running in these temperatures.
