It's not much of chat topic but Tesco just cancelled my delivery due in 1 hour - 'because of the severe weather'.

Perhaps tescos should have a system where you can register vulnerable customers so they get priority, deliveries would be fewer and could be done before 10.00 and after 4.00. For most customers a shopping delivery is a convenience, but for some elderly housebound it’s a necessity. If my PIL delivery is cancelled on Thursday (South West) due to the weather they have no other way to get supplies.

So do they not keep a few tins of beans in the cupboard and a spare loaf in the freezer to cover this sort of eventuality? Most people who aren't in easy reach of a shop, or cant get to the shops, do.

My in-laws are pretty much housebound and certainly cant go out and about in this weather but could live on the contents of their cupboards/freezer til 2030.

My friends works in a hospital and herself has a severe medical condition which means that excessive heat can make her very ill very quickly. She has been told by her manager that fans are not allowed in “clinical areas” due to health and safety!

This is true though unfortunately. I work in medical now and fans are not allowed in clinical areas. Some places will turn a blind eye, but technically it is a cross infection risk and not allowed.

Well you'd think, but a lot of people seem to think that it's utterly impossible for anyone to forward plan and have a bit of resilience so they're not massively inconvenienced if a delivery doesn't turn up.

Ha, this won't be because Tesco care about their staff.......it will be because the heat is affecting the chiller that keeps the food cold. This time of year is an absolute nightmare in supermarkets with chillers and freezers going down. A metal van pootling round with only a limited capacity generator working their cooling system stands no chance.

Just been in the local M&S and a few fridges were closed due to the heat they generate when working

MPforTitipu · 23/06/2026 15:29

It's 34º here and there's been a man working on my roof since 8am. I keep suggesting that he might like to finish early but he's determined to carry on. His compromise is to come down from time to time and have drink and stand with his face in my fridge.

Two problems with that: 1) my milk's turning sour (a small price to pay to keep him OK)
and 2) he then has to climb all the way back up the ladders again as I can't reach him with a drink from the window.

Bit surprised. Thought they'd have Aircon in the vehicles and they're not out of them for long.

Lots of people who have to work no matter what.

Not sure I agree with cancelling shopping at pate notice like that but it's nice to hear about staff being looked after if it's needed.

We asked our delivery driver last week and they dont have aircon in their vans.

Thats ridiculous. I’ve just drove home from work. 20 mins across the city in 47 degree heat. My car was 51 when I got in it and I’m doing it everyday at the moment. I get the lack of air-con issue in buildings in the UK, but most vehicles have it as standard now.

Have you not read the posts, or do you not believe the people who have told you a lot of supermarket delivery vehicles do not have air con ?
Do you have to load heavy crates into your car before you go on your journey and deliver them to second floor flats with no lifts?
That is ridiculous.

GimmieABreakOr3 · 23/06/2026 15:34

I am surprised Tesco cancelled the shopping delivery. I use Tesco too. As others have said, their vans have air con. I would’ve thought these are one of the jobs that can still be carried out safely in this heat. I’d be interested to know their rationale. It’s not exactly 40/50 degrees out there…

Yes @grumpygrape.It’s ridiculous. Still stand by it. How do you think hot countries make deliveries?

It’s a real concern though as air conditioning doesn’t work or is non-existent in many areas too.

Have you read the thread or just weighed in without bothering? Many of the vans don’t have air conditioning. They also have issues keeping the food at a safe temperature in this heat.

French and Spanish supermarkets are assessing deliveries, often rearranging them earlier and later or cancelling them. They are aware, as Tesco is that employee safety and food temperature safety are important.

What has hot country delivery methods got to do with the current fleet of Tesco home shopping vans?

Maybe some have air con but it seems from this thread that a lot don't, how is knowing what the Dubai equivalent of Tesco does going to help?

GimmieABreakOr3 · 23/06/2026 16:03

Reckon the driver didn’t come to work 😂

Deliveries are one of the jobs covered by the hot weather work suspensions in Italy. It’s 35 in London currently which is the temperature that the Italian suspensions kick in. So there is probably some evidence that it is not safe.

Probably couldn’t because they were looking after their kid whose school had been closed due to the heat!

I know this will enormously depend on the area. But if that does happen I would contact the shop. The Tesco in my home town don't have a delivery service but one of the managers did home deliveries for those who needed it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I haven’t had any correspondence from
them so hoping it’ll be fine.

our binmen are starting at 5am this week. Now thats a tough job in this weather not delivering groceries.

Yes, we've been asked to put our bins out on the evening before collection instead of the usual 7am on bin day

Yes, they do have supplies, but they are 90 and 91, both have significant memory issues, and knowing their delivery comes at the same time every week is important and reassuring for them. Sadly my MIL doesn’t really understand the concept of a freezer with spare loaves of bread, she struggles enough with what is in the fridge and has no real concept of use by dates. They shouldn’t really be living independently’ but that’s a whole new thread!

It is. In my non air conditioned job I had a patient walk out and refuse treatment because of how hot it was. Unless the people in charge fit it with air conditioning though everyone needs to just suck it up unfortunately. I don’t agree with it but what else can be done?

Not everyone can "suck it up" unfortunately. Some of us really can't work /attend a hospital appointment if we over heat because the consequences for our health are too severe.

Even a few steps outside and I am losing the ability to speak and swallow in this heat . Staying cool isn't a " nice to have" it's essential

GimmieABreakOr3 · 23/06/2026 16:47

I was due to have microneedling done today after work, but fortunately the lady messaged me on Monday asking me if I wanted to reschedule due to the heatwave.

Tell that to the Met Office and my lettuce 😊

Stock up on things they can eat that will last, so maybe don’t stockpile lettuce

Sorry, blame the heat, what I meant was the Met Office aren't always accurate with their forecasts.
I do have a store of food etc. to draw on but sadly a lot of it needs cooking... 🥵
