Tesco cancelled my delivery due to severe weather

It's not much of chat topic but Tesco just cancelled my delivery due in 1 hour - 'because of the severe weather'.

Cancelling your shopping with an hour’s notice is not on, OP. If Tesco’s have made the decision not to deliver during hot weather, they should at least turn it into click and collect - leaving people high and dry at such short notice is really not OK.

They have aircon AND freezers and fridges in their vehicles. How on earth is this affecting deliveries?

They don't have AC in the vans.

GingerBeverage · 23/06/2026 08:35

EarlyRun · 23/06/2026 08:32

They won’t want the refrigeration system# on their vans breaking which they can in the heat. Seems sensible. Hopefully you can pop to the shop yourself or do you have someone to help if you can’t manage?

Thanks. Once the school rush is over I'll pop out for the essentials. Really glad we got our old golf aircon regassed not that long ago (it leaks).

As pp said upthread, I really hope they can prioritise the elderly and less mobile.

Sorry to be a grumpy old sod - but we really did all survive before supermarket deliveries took off. The first supermarket delivery service started in 1995 but it only really took off as a result of Covid.
If we'll all become so fucking useless that we can't work round a failed grocery delivery I despair.

They are lifting and carrying heavy crates, all day.

The red warning is clear, there is a risk to life, you should not travel unless necessary. Of course Tesco should cancel deliveries to protect their staff.

I've got to get an early train tomorrow and have just seen that 7/10 of them have been cancelled, including mine, again due to the weather. The forecast is 29 degrees and it'll be around 25 when I wanted to travel. I know that tracks can buckle etc but really?

Railway man's wife here.

The rails are steel and will expand in extreme heat. There is some allowance made for that (which is why you get the clikety-click sound when travelling in 'normal' temperatures).

If the expansion is too great they can push against other parts of the track, ballast, points and signalling mechanisms.
This is a risk to rolling stock and passengers. Hence line closures for safety.

Valpolichella · 23/06/2026 08:43

It’s depressing that as a country all we seem able to cope with is damp and drizzly. Other countries function fine with more extreme weather but we grind to a halt with pretty much everything! I remember getting stuck abroad due to “extreme” weather, which was about 2 inches of snow. The Canadians, who fly in and out with 2+ feet of snow couldn’t believe it.
And now it’s too hot? What are all these other counties doing differently which makes them able to carry on?

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 23/06/2026 08:12

I don't think it's acceptable to cancel deliveries due to hot weather unless they are able to guarantee priority delivery for vulnerable people. I have two elderly relatives who absolutely rely on their online deliveries and it wouldn't be ok to just cancel them.

This. And not just elderly people, lots of people with health conditions too. I'm basically confined to our air-conditioned downstairs till the weather changes. Thankfully DH is at home so can go to the shops if needed

If they regularly have extreme weather they invest in the necessary infrastructure. I struggle to believe anyone genuinely doesn't understand this

It's.a case of economics- it hardly ever snows in the UK so it's not worth investing in the equipment and other workarounds to combat it. It snows for months in Canada so it's worth the investment.

That's a really fair point. It must be brutal work in heat

It’s more about the staff welfare than your shopping

Yes me too. Now I am just hoping for a message to say my 13hr Nursing shifts on Wed/ Thurs and Fri have been cancelled and we can all bunk off. Or as many people said take it as annual leave (as if!!).

Presumably you knew when you went in to the job, it was the kind of job you would be required to work no matter what?

Presumably as a healthcare worker, knowing the struggles hospitals face right now, you would want people to take the right precautions so the NHS isn’t overwhelmed with people requiring care because of the heat, taking up resources for those with emergent conditions?

Perhaps you want us all out on Wednesday night banging our pots and pans for you?

Actually I am not sure that's true.

Firstly we had lots of small shops that delivered, and milkmen etc

Secondly elderly and vulnerable people definitely still struggled, particularly if unwell. My parents regularly helped our elderly neighbours out for instance

It might be due to the warehouse. My friend worked for ocado during the last heatwave and said the temp in the warehouse was over 40 degrees :(

This is such a yawning boring type of comment, yes climate change might be having an effect but as we country we can't afford to have infrastructure for every type of rare weather that might happen every few years.

What's your solution?

This.

Tesco have lost the plot though. Prices are ridiculous, the adverts are from another planet and our big local one is absolutely filthy.

This weather is what a lot of countries deal with all the time but we go to pieces entirely.

SallySall · 23/06/2026 08:51

As others have pointed out people are complaining it’s too hot for THEM to go to work but not everyone else now apparently. There was another thread where someone thought they should have the day off despite their office having air con because they would still need to travel to the office in the heat. Well even if the delivery drivers have air con in their vans they still need to keep getting out of them constantly into the same heat. I never understand the contradictions on here.
“It’s far too hot to work! My office with air con needs to give me the day off (paid) because it’s dangerous to travel!! But why the fuck is my Tesco delivery not arriving?? Why the fuck are these people not be at work???? Ridiculous!!!”

Cobrakainerd · 23/06/2026 08:54

hay5689 · 23/06/2026 08:17

This. When I said on another thread about schools closing that I agree as long as everyone else gets the day off it didn’t go down well. Apparently schools are hotter than mercury this week but everywhere else is just warm.

Parents clammer to get schools closing but they won't take their little darlings home and keep them there and cool, they will be out shopping, down the beach, playgrounds, cafes, restaurants, attractions. Ok they won't be in a stuffy classroom but adults can't all work from home. Not every workplace is air-conditioned. If schools close stay home don't make more work for others!

SilverPink · 23/06/2026 08:55

I’ve had two Tesco deliveries cancelled in recent weeks, both due to van issues, so I’m not holding out much hope for my delivery this week. I’ve only just received the £150 refund from one because they ‘forgot’ and I had to get a bit shirty on WhatsApp 🙄

Dontcallmescarface · 23/06/2026 08:57

Maybe it's because they don't have enough drivers...what with schools closing and health alerts.

Schnapper · 23/06/2026 08:57

CoverLikelyZebra · 23/06/2026 08:23

Cancelling is not on. At the very least they shoukd convert the order into a Click and Collect - there's no reason why the order shouldn't still be picked and packed in the nice air-conditioned store. Obviously still a huge pain if you don't have a car but still possible to get your shopping. Cancelling it altogether coukd be disastrous for some.

That's a really good idea.

I had just sat down to do my order for tomorrow. I'll make it click and collect I think.

Gowlett · 23/06/2026 08:58

LaliqueSaltGrinder · 23/06/2026 08:10

Well you can't have it both ways, can you? MN south of about Stafford demanding schools close and everyone works from home. That includes Tesco drivers.

It all seems quite hysterical, from reading MN. Is there rolling news about it in the UK? It’s going to be hot & stormy this week. People are really getting whipped up over what the kids are wearing to school etc…

Nah, most people I know were having deliveries as their main shopping method for many years before Covid.

Edited

its the loading and unloading physical aspect of delivering
There’s a red warning danger to life if anything happens to there drivers and they’ve sent them out when there’s a danger to life warning there liable

people are so self centred
