Tesco cancelled my delivery due to severe weather

It's not much of chat topic but Tesco just cancelled my delivery due in 1 hour - 'because of the severe weather'.

Tesco cancelled my delivery this morning but let me rebook for this afternoon. I expected it to be cancelled again, but it says it has been picked. I presume they either had staff shortages due to the heat, or issues with broken vans or decided to reduce the number of deliveries each person does to make it easier in the heat.

Tbh I feel a bit guilty making them deliver, but I am unwell and going to the shop would be difficult. However we could of course make do with what we have in the house.

My tesco delivery has just been, its not that hot here atm in the south West.
Driver said if they had cancelled the deliveries he wouldnt have been paid unless he took holiday.

Schools have been closed or opening times adapted and people in Paris have been urged to stay off the transport system though.
Its not like they are pretending nothing is happening.

It'll be the heavy lifting and pushing of the crates likely which is the issue rather than the driving

It depends on vehicle that they have
If they are electris then they struggle in normal weather to provide the enargy to power the fridges and freezers.

I'm disabled with health conditions. I do have a carer but he doesn't drive and I don't have a car.

I get almost everything delivered, although my carer does the odd bit of shopping for me.

What people in my position have is a stash in case something like this happens. I have a stash of tins, porridge oats, dried pasta etc.

It's not ideal to not get a delivery but I can survive from my cupboards for a while.

On the subject of the drivers, I usually get a delivery in the 6.00 - 7.00 slot, I often give the drivers a can of pop and I'm in a bungalow so no stairs to go up / down.

But some people are in second / third floor flats with no lid.

It's 35c here in France, will be 42c by 5pm.
Dh has just finished cutting our hedge so the farmer can access his field more easily. I think he's mad.
Yesterday at 5pm I jumped in my car and it was registering the outside temp as 50c. It did drop to 46c once I started driving.
It's dangerously hot outside in the late afternoon.

We have one air con unit which we're not even using atm. Our house has thick stone walls and stays relatively cool as long as we keep the windows and shutters shut.

The schools around us are open but the parents can keep the dc at home if they prefer.

My local M&S has shut down several fridges to ensure they don't break down. Just been to Sainsbury's where at least 50% of fridges are closed off because 'temperature is not as cold as should be" according to signage. I don't really understand because both stores are operating very chilly aircon throughout.

I started that thread. 100% they should be off if they’re not essential workers. Just like Covid.

My cousin delivers for tesco and he says the vans are shit. Especially the new e-vans they're rolling out.

The air con doesn't work, or breaks easily, the refrigeration system just can not keep up and even in the 25° weather we had last week people were refusing delivery at the door for warm goods and asking for refunds.

On the whole the vans are impractical but they're a climate friendly virtue signal. No good if you can't actually do your job though.

Exactly this I'm the same I'm disabled and when you have to be more reliant on others you become organised. Yes a fresh shop is nice but its not essential i could survive quite a while without if I needed to

Tp the other poster - we don’t have aircon because we never needed it until climate change fucked us up. We’ve literally never hit these temperatures before 2022. Never. Now the Met office is predicting by 2056 47 degrees could be reached. Most of the world will be fucked by then.

Pitiful.

Note they’re still expecting elderly and vulnerable customers to travel with no aircon to the store, pack, and carry their shopping home on a boiling bus.

It is here. I had a food delivery on Saturday and everything was warm, ice cream melted and it wasn’t nearly as hot as it is today.

Depends where you are. 36/37 here today and tomorrow. I'd say that's pretty hot.

I've just had my Tesco delivery. I'm in London and it is hot! Was chatting with the driver and he says he has air con in the van but that it's the constant in and out and lugging heavy shopping. Prior to me, he'd been to a second floor flat with no lift.

I imagine the effects are area dependant. Being close to central London, my delivery drivers have very little time inside the vehicle due to all the drops being relatively close by. Somewhere more rural, they'd spend a lot more time in the vehicle.

It would have been a bit annoying if mine was cancelled but, living where I do, I could get essentials delivered from multiple sources so not a big deal. Again, rurally it could be more of an issue.

Tesco is a business not social services. You don’t have an automatic right to home delivery no matter your circumstances.

Well in Glastonbury Tesco got closed last night due to flooding?!

You do realise that huge huge numbers of people do not get paid if they don’t work right? Personally I find it so weird that so many people on here expect to get paid when not working for so many different reasons!

Their lorry freezers don't work well at the best of times. Don't think I've ever had an ice cream lolly delivered that wasn't melted

If people want there to be guaranteed or at least priority services to the most vulnerable in extreme heat, that needs to be funded collectively. Of course a private business can't realistically guarantee it, and isn't going to fund it either.
