Guess my age

No this isn't going to be one of those threads where I post a photograph and ask you to say how old you think I look.

I just thought for a bit of fun for anyone who like me has too much time on their hands, I would post a few facts about myself and see if you can guess my age.

I will post odd random facts over the next day, then tell you my age tomorrow.

This is a new user name, in case I have mentioned my age in previous post.

Fact 1) My mother used to wear dresses made of crimplene.

Fact 2) My father used to ride a bike and wore cycle clips to stop his trousets from getting caught in the cycle chain.

I find the parents being born before the start of WW1 and the OP reading Jackie magazine quite hard.

I read Jackie magazine and I am in my 60’s. My mum was born in the early 1930’s. And had me when she was 30 odd.

But earlier ?

I still sometimes wear bycle clips on my trousers, I feel ancient now I bought a new pair in a Christmas Market made of recycled can pulls.

First telly when you were 5. Given the years your parents were born, I am strongly inclined to them buying their first telly for the Coronation in 1953. That took place on 2nd June so if you were already 5 then you were born in 1948. However if you were 6 later that year then you were born in 1947.

If you were born Jan- 2nd June 1948 then you are now 78. If you were born June 3rd-December 1947 then conceivably you could be 79 but I’m going with balance of probability that you haven’t had your birthday yet and am plumping for 78.

That maths hurt and is probably wrong 😄

That would likely make her parents about 50 when she was born. Quite unlikely.

For breakfast when I lived at home, I would have had cornflakes, but my mum used to have all bran.

My first date would have been to the school disco, nothing very memorable.

If it weren't for the fact that you're an only child, I'd think you were definitely my aunt. My grandma is the only person I've ever met who willingly ate all bran!

Snoopymayhem · 18/06/2026 17:05

I haven’t done this must research since my postgrad 😵‍💫🤣 ( I’m taking notes 😆 )

I’m going for 70 OP

although that may very well not be my final offer

( and guessing you’re parents were comfortable financially
ie buying a tv relatively early even though it was second hand
and of course your pocket money )

pandora206 · 18/06/2026 17:10

I'd have very similar answers but had a young mum (21 when I was born) so I'll guess just a bit older at 73.

openthefrontdoor · 18/06/2026 17:10

Next clue - my parents got their first telephone when I was probably around 10 or 12 and it was a party line, so we couldn't use it if the next door neighbour was already on her phone.

We had that - a shared party line!

Did you grow up on some remote island like in Whiskey Galore. ??

No, I don't recall hearing that on the news, or reading about it, although to be fair, my parents, that might have been because they protected me from some of the more harsh realities of life, rather than it happening when I was not born or was a very young baby.

Haha - no I grew up in a typical medium sized town and party lines were common.

My grandparents were born in 1911 and 1910 and they had my mother when they were 36 and 37. She is 80. Jackie magazine started in 1964 so most 15 year old reading Jackie in 1970 would be 71 now. Unless your parents had you when they were well into their 40s, you are probably around 75.

Buscobel · 18/06/2026 17:20

I think 79.

Superscared · 18/06/2026 17:20

All of these facts apply to my mum, apart from the cost of house. At 28 my mum and dad bought a house for £17000 but that was in Yorkshire. So I’m guessing you are 72.

PuppyMonkey · 18/06/2026 17:22

I think you’re 77. I also think your thread is going to get irritating if you don’t tell us until tomorrow. Grin

  1. You probably went to school with me. I belonged to the Monkees and Walker Brothers fan clubs.
