Guess my age

openthefrontdoor · 18/06/2026 14:32

No this isn't going to be one of those threads where I post a photograph and ask you to say how old you think I look.

I just thought for a bit of fun for anyone who like me has too much time on their hands, I would post a few facts about myself and see if you can guess my age.

I will post odd random facts over the next day, then tell you my age tomorrow.

This is a new user name, in case I have mentioned my age in previous post.

Fact 1) My mother used to wear dresses made of crimplene.

Fact 2) My father used to ride a bike and wore cycle clips to stop his trousets from getting caught in the cycle chain.

Yes, but your mother probably wasn't 45 when she had you. Jackie was also published for quite a number of years. Do you remember reading the problem page first?

Lol always 😂

Nah - people are still guessing my age now!

I know, but only a few and there'll always be a couple that rush to answer without checking.
It goes on for ages when it's a photo "guess my age" but I suspect a lot of that is people who've read the answer and either want to look like they're clever or are being mean.
This thread has generally been very pleasant.

I get where you are coming from but it really was normal at one time.

It certainly was. The 6th form common room at my school was like a tap room with all the smoke. Legal age for smoking was 16.

Random321 · 19/06/2026 12:50

Really enjoyable thread.

Happy 70th Birthday whenever it is, even though I thought it was today 🤣

I do - I also remember the toothpaste that came as a hard block in a tin.

Bicarb, TCP, basilicon ointment, calamine lotion, Germolene and those plasters that came in a long strip so you cut the right size were everything your parents needed to cure all ills.

Gibb's dentifrice was the toothpaste block.

Does anyone else around my age remember block mascara? Should have given that as a clue yesterday.

OMG yes. I used to spit on it to wet it 😬

Pepperlee · 19/06/2026 13:08

Thanks @openthefrontdoor for the nostalgia. We had all brown and orange when first married and I thought it was lovely but must have been hideous 😃. Crimplene was the wonder fabric of the 60s. Sewing with it was a dream...no fraying or ironing.

Next fact - my parents were both born before the start of World War 1.

WW1 started in 1914. Do you mean WW2?

Shinyhappyapple · 19/06/2026 13:10

I had two guesses of 71 and 68 so neither was too far out! Very interesting as so many of these were reminiscent of my childhood but I guess that could be the case for people anywhere in their 60s or late 50s.

I didn’t know that the 3 day week meant shops were closed, but like others I remember the power cuts, and I think we didn’t go into school every day because of that. My mum was a teacher, but for some reason her school was open when mine was closed (different heating system I think) and when my school closed, I had to go and sit in her class. She was a lot stricter as a teacher than as a mum!

Gosh, I wonder how it was for your mother to have you aged 45. Unusual then. My mother had three children by age 25… your cultural reference points were so familiar, but I was thrown by your parents age. Lovely thread!

Americasfavouritefightingfrenchman · 19/06/2026 13:43

I would have guessed older (nearer 80) at first largely on the assumption your mum and dad were younger. I then was thinking if you were that age you’d remember things better so I ended up in my head thinking early 70s. My paternal grandmother had my dad at a similar age as your mum had you but he was the last of 6. Maybe being an older mum wasn’t all that uncommon and it would only be the first time part that was a bit unusual.

aurpod1980 · 19/06/2026 14:02

Wow! Your grandparents were Victorians then? Amazing

no, WW1. My parents were born in 1908 and 1912 and I was born in 1957.

I see you have said 69 and I read all your posts and thought shes about my age 68. The house prices were similar to what was around when we bought our house. Good thread

I enjoyed this thread - a few things threw me off but I wasn't too far off in the end.

ScribblingPixie · 19/06/2026 15:07

Tut, 69 was my first thought. I lost confidence. How interesting that your parents were born so early in the century, OP. My dad was similar and he had quite a lot of Victorian-style traits and snippets of history to pass on. You must have learned a lot from them yet been very different?

PopPopPoppies · 19/06/2026 16:41

My dad was similar and he had quite a lot of Victorian-style traits and snippets of history to pass on.
So did mine. When telling the time, my dad always said "five and twenty past" not "twenty five past" - my DM thought that was a Victorian-style trait, and it always annoyed her!

AsTreesWalking · 19/06/2026 18:07

openthefrontdoor · 19/06/2026 14:09

no, WW1. My parents were born in 1908 and 1912 and I was born in 1957.

I knew we were similar! I'm 61, but my parents were born 1905 and 1919! I am the youngest child of 4.
Fun thread, thank you.
