Guess my age

openthefrontdoor · 18/06/2026 14:32

No this isn't going to be one of those threads where I post a photograph and ask you to say how old you think I look.

I just thought for a bit of fun for anyone who like me has too much time on their hands, I would post a few facts about myself and see if you can guess my age.

I will post odd random facts over the next day, then tell you my age tomorrow.

This is a new user name, in case I have mentioned my age in previous post.

Fact 1) My mother used to wear dresses made of crimplene.

Fact 2) My father used to ride a bike and wore cycle clips to stop his trousets from getting caught in the cycle chain.

What a fab idea for a thread. I would honestly have guessed mid 60s with all the clues apart from the dates of birth of your parents, Op. I am going to say 82.

I think you’re 77. I also think your thread is going to get irritating if you don’t tell us until tomorrow. Grin

I promise to tell you all tomorrow, assuming I don't drop dead by then!

hmmm I think you are 83. How much was the average semi when you were in your 30s?

  1. You probably went to school with me. I belonged to the Monkees and Walker Brothers fan clubs.

Yes, I liked the Monkeys too, although not the Walker Brothers.

Mid-60s?

saveforthat · 18/06/2026 17:29

Nearly everything you said also applies to me. I'm 67 but my parents were quite old when they had me so I'm going for 76.

Sarah2891 · 18/06/2026 17:30
  1. Some of the details could apply to my mum who is that age.

I don't know officially, but we bought a semi when I was in my 30's and it cost 60,000. That was probably about the UK average for that time.

Based on those 2 facts alone, clearly not Gen Z

FamBae · 18/06/2026 17:36

World War 1 started in 1914, Jackie came out in 1964 so I'm guessing you would have been about 13/14. I'm going for 77.

Crummles1 · 18/06/2026 17:37

I think the OP said she enjoyed/read Jackie magazine - might have been for her own dd

Ditto getting 6d pocket money - decimalisation didn't happen until 1971, so could have had 'old money' for years

Not sure what it says about my age, but I don't understand your reference.

All your memories match with me, which puts you at mid 70s, except the house price. Houses in London cost that when I was late 20s. but not in Bedfordshire, which is cheaper.
If your mother was born early 1914, she would have been 42 in 1956.
which would make you are 70. All your other cultural references seem to fit with being a bit older than that.

Actually, I do recall - it's the answer to the meaning of life, isn't it?

How old were you when you came of age/were able to vote?
It changed from 21 to 18 when I was around that age.

I'm not telling my age until tomorrow, I've just been thanking or liking everyone that replies to my thread.

Not guessing your age, OP, but just wanted to thank you for the trip down Memory Lane! Jackie, the Monkees, Dixon of Dock Green, Green Shield stamps, Listen with Mother... Do you remember the Black and White Minstrels? 🫣😬 and using a coat hanger as a TV aerial?

Lovely that your mum is still around 💗

Speakeasy22 · 18/06/2026 17:48

69? Same age as me. I can relate strongly to all your hints.
