Guess my age

No this isn't going to be one of those threads where I post a photograph and ask you to say how old you think I look.

I just thought for a bit of fun for anyone who like me has too much time on their hands, I would post a few facts about myself and see if you can guess my age.

I will post odd random facts over the next day, then tell you my age tomorrow.

This is a new user name, in case I have mentioned my age in previous post.

Fact 1) My mother used to wear dresses made of crimplene.

Fact 2) My father used to ride a bike and wore cycle clips to stop his trousets from getting caught in the cycle chain.

I am 68 and we got our first black and white telly when I was 5, my mum wore crimplene and we went from listening with mother on the radio to watch with mother on the black and white telly, and I had a subscription to Jackie magazine. My parents were born between the wars though, so I'm guessing you are a bit older, at 75?

I'm going to guess your parents had you later in life, in their 40's so you would have been born in the mid 50's. I would say you're 71, born in 1955 making you a teen in the 70's when Jackie was popular. We shall see tomorrow who's right. Nice thread!

OrdinaryMoment · 18/06/2026 16:20

Early 70’s …. 73?

SpringingOn · 18/06/2026 16:21

If you had pocket money in sixpence as a child, you must have been 18 by 1971. So you must have been born in 1953 at the latest. If your Mum was born before 1914, I am guessing you were born about 1950 and The Beatles were your favourite band in the 1960s, and you bought your first house in the late seventies/early eighties. So I think you must be between 73 and 78. I am going to guess 76.

OttersOnAPlane · 18/06/2026 16:21

81, because your experiences sound pretty much exactly like my parents', and that's the average of their ages.

My mum saw the Beatles when they played the local Working Men's Club. They weren't asked back because they were "too loud" according to the committee.

You sound like the same growing up period is me!
66?

FunkyFringe · 18/06/2026 16:22

Hmm, difficult. My grandmother was born in 1914, a weeks after the outbreak of WW1 and my grandfather was a few years older. My mother is now 82 but she read Girl as I remember looking through old copies when I was a child. I'm 61 and I was into Jackie. So I'm guessing you're closer to my mother's age than mine. I'm going with 78, possibly because your Father might have been away during WW2 and so they got together after WW2. You might have been born around 1948 and so would be 15/16 when the Beatles gained popularity. BTW, I remember loving Dixon of Dock Green! He was such a gentle character.

The 6d pocket money was whilst I was a younger child, not when I was 17 or 18.

Everything fits for a DOB year of 1956 to 1961. But that would have made your parents quite old when they had you.
