Guess my age

openthefrontdoor · 18/06/2026 14:32

No this isn't going to be one of those threads where I post a photograph and ask you to say how old you think I look.

I just thought for a bit of fun for anyone who like me has too much time on their hands, I would post a few facts about myself and see if you can guess my age.

I will post odd random facts over the next day, then tell you my age tomorrow.

This is a new user name, in case I have mentioned my age in previous post.

Fact 1) My mother used to wear dresses made of crimplene.

Fact 2) My father used to ride a bike and wore cycle clips to stop his trousets from getting caught in the cycle chain.

Has anybody guessed it correctly yet @openthefrontdoor ? You’ve ’ thanked ‘ me on my comment ( 72 ) , and I’m not sure whether that was intentional or a finger slip lol

I'm thanking or liking everyone's post just as a thank you to them for responding. It doesn't mean anything in respect of whether the guess is correct.

I agree that the winner should be the next person we have to guess!

DaftOpalPoet · 18/06/2026 15:57

Did you mean WW2?
On that assumption, 67.

WW1 started in 1914 , so OP could have been born anytime from 1930 ( extremely young parents ) to 1956
which would have made them early 40s when she was born .

Loub1987 · 18/06/2026 16:00

Loving the thread, I’m going 84.

Millowmallowsky · 18/06/2026 16:00

75?

nameoftheday · 18/06/2026 16:01

OP you've had loads of guesses already. I'm not sure you need to run it into tomorrow. Nice thread though.

sorry accidental quote

Edited

I won't give the correct answer until tomorrow. Some people might like to guess after they finish work tonight.

Your clues mostly match my life. We got a TV when I was 5, I had brightly coloured bedroom walls as a teen, I read Jackie and my mother wore crimplene. My parents were born after WWI, but my FIL was born before.
If your DM was born before 1914, you were most likely born before she was 40, which was 1953.
Were your music favourites The Beatles or the Stones? They were the top for me.
Did they still have rationing when you were born?

I still wear clips on my trousers when I'm riding my bike! Nothing worse than getting your trousers covered in oil.

No, that was not a typo I did mean that my parents were both born before the star of world war 1.

which would have made them early 40s when she was born .

Could have been slightly later - my grandmother was late 40s when she had her last child. I’d say anything up to the early 1960s for birth year could be realistic.

Though I’m sricking with 77 as my guess.

I think you must have missed the bit where I said my parents were both born before the start of World War 1. (They were my real parents, I wasn't adopted).

So, if your parents were born before the start of World War One, that would mean they were born at LEAST 115 years ago. (Born around 1910-12 or earlier.) So realistically, you cannot have been born after 1955-1958ish. (And 1958 is pushing it as it means your mother would have had you at 48... )

And whilst some Mumsnetters claim they had 3 babies in their 40s, and their great grandma and great aunt had a baby at 50, in reality, very few women have a baby at that age! So you must be about 70. (You say Jackie was your favourite magazine. That was popular in the late 1960s to mid 1970s...) So that adds up. So I will say......

You are 68.

I don't recall ration books still being a thing when I was a child, but I'm not going to google when rationing finished and give you an exact answer as that might be too specific.

That would make her mother 66 ( at least ) when she was born 🙈
Sorry just realised yours was the first guess without the further added info lol ,
Im a bit too invested in this now …steps away from the thread …

SeasideStitcher · 18/06/2026 16:12

Some of what you've said could apply to me and I'm 68 so I'm going with that - I had an older parent who was born before WW1 too.

wrongthinker · 18/06/2026 16:12

Hmm I think maybe late 60s, early 70s. I read Jackie but I'm in my 50s. Unless your parents were older when they had you? Although you wouldn't have been able to buy a house for £24k surely.

Okay I'll say 79. I have no idea but it's a fun thread!

VeryOldPerson · 18/06/2026 16:12

74

Hackman · 18/06/2026 16:13

You say your parents were born before 1914!
If they were born 1913 say and had you when they were 30 that makes you 83!
I'm 63 and my mum was born 1936.

Queenofthestonage · 18/06/2026 16:14

I’m 63 and also loved Jackie magazine but my mother was born in 1942 so as yours was born pre 1914 I guess you must be around 78?
