Guess my age

openthefrontdoor · 18/06/2026 14:32

No this isn't going to be one of those threads where I post a photograph and ask you to say how old you think I look.

I just thought for a bit of fun for anyone who like me has too much time on their hands, I would post a few facts about myself and see if you can guess my age.

I will post odd random facts over the next day, then tell you my age tomorrow.

This is a new user name, in case I have mentioned my age in previous post.

Fact 1) My mother used to wear dresses made of crimplene.

Fact 2) My father used to ride a bike and wore cycle clips to stop his trousets from getting caught in the cycle chain.

Indeed. 450 posts and apart from some minor sniping about the impossibility of 60ish YO mothers, I don't think a bad word has been said. Well played OP. Smile

Blimey - feel really chuffed!! I am an avid Picle player (In the Time - they post a picture and you have to guess the year and the location). I just love pieces together all the clues about a person.

Thank you for starting such a fun and uncontroversial thread. 🥰

Well done. Feel free to start your own thread if you wish and we can try and guess your age. I have not heard of Picle, Do you have a link please?

It sounds like a game I have played called Timeguessr. Here's a link if you are interested. https://timeguessr.com/

Does anyone else around my age remember block mascara? Should have given that as a clue yesterday.

Gah! I worked out you little younger than my 74 year old Mum from your voting age being 18. She was between 18 and 21 when it happened in 1971! I am devastated to be one year old at 70!

Here’s the link (not sure if you have to be a subscriber but will look at the timeguessr one!)

Yesterday’s was a picture of a 1815 battle of waterloo reenactment in Belgium (so not all of them are in the UK). It appears my years of watch Miss Marple has meant I am not bad at guessing eras from clothing and hats!! Yo ufind yourself slipping down social history google wormholes because you can see a particular brand of backpack you had in your 20s and find yourself wondering when the company cease existing. for me the biggest clue you have was when you mentioned that your parents were neither Elvis or Cliff fans - which would have made them (and you!) a little bit younger… about my age!

Picle | Puzzles | The Times & The Sunday Times

There's a time and a place for every picture. Your task is to find both. Play Picle from The Times every day.

Yes (71) you had to spit on it & apply it with a small brush & it always clumped!

Thanks. Will give Picle a go later.

Neither of my parents were big music fans at all. We had an old wind up gramophone and some records that were really old. I guess someone had passed that on to them, as they wouldn't have had enough money to buy it. They never really played it, though, but I used to like to try it out as a young child. My mum used to have a transistor radio, but she tended to listen to programs like Women's Hour, not music.

When I was about 10 or 11, I was given a second hand record player by someone getting a new one. I remember the first record I bought with my birthday or Christmas present money was Lily The Pink by The Scaffold. (Should have given that as a clue yesterday too.)

Thanks for the picture. That was exactly the uniform I wore. I don't recall when it was introduced.

My FIL was in Palestine during/ after WW2 in the Navy up to the end of the Mandate
wonder if they knew each other.

My mother used it and weirdly when I think about it would spit in it before putting it on her eyelashes.

My mum did that too!

That was really fun, OP. Thanks for an enjoyable bit of thinking!

I am pleased that my guess was close!

Thankingyoumuchly · 19/06/2026 11:45

Thanks OP - that was good fun & even better for me as I guessed right! Total fluke tho!

I do - I also remember the toothpaste that came as a hard block in a tin.

Bicarb, TCP, basilicon ointment, calamine lotion, Germolene and those plasters that came in a long strip so you cut the right size were everything your parents needed to cure all ills.

LaMarschallin · 19/06/2026 12:07

Another nice thing about this thread is that people have actually read it and there hasn't (so far!) been a load of "Cancel the cheque" further age guesses once the OP said what it was.

LaMarschallin · 19/06/2026 12:12

@YoBetty

Bicarb, TCP, basilicon ointment, calamine lotion, Germolene

Yes! All of those plus Vick vapour rub and Friars Balsam - the latter to be inhaled from a steaming bowl of boiling water with a towel over your head.
My mother wore block mascara but I started wearing makeup in the mid-late 70s and think I only used tubes.
The spitting on the brush thing was a definite off-putter for me.

TheMoanerLisa · 19/06/2026 12:14

What a delightful read this thread has been! Lots of clues suggested you were a couple of years older than me, but what lovely memories it has brought back.

It made me recall my father's cherished collection of 78rpm records and mum's Ayds weight loss chocolates!

Next fact. I used to love Jackie magazine.

This is odd because I read Jackie, yet my parents were born after the end of the 2nd world war!!

Yes, but your mother probably wasn't 45 when she had you. Jackie was also published for quite a number of years. Do you remember reading the problem page first?
