Guess my age

No this isn't going to be one of those threads where I post a photograph and ask you to say how old you think I look.

I just thought for a bit of fun for anyone who like me has too much time on their hands, I would post a few facts about myself and see if you can guess my age.

I will post odd random facts over the next day, then tell you my age tomorrow.

This is a new user name, in case I have mentioned my age in previous post.

Fact 1) My mother used to wear dresses made of crimplene.

Fact 2) My father used to ride a bike and wore cycle clips to stop his trousets from getting caught in the cycle chain.

I think you are 66

lilaccamille · 18/06/2026 22:49

I reckon 67

It's probably something I should remember, but my memory is a bit hazy about it.

I definitely lived through it, but only have a vague memory of it - I was at primary school at the time.

Someone else asked about JFK and I don't really remember it, but perhaps my parents didn't want to worry me with the death of a US president. I perhaps should recall it.

I don't remember JFK, but I do remember Robert Kennedy's assassination.

Vivid wallpaper suggests a 70s childhood

so I’m going for 64

on the basis I had vivid wallpaper ( orange and brown ) but barely remember it so if you remember it I think you may be a little older than me
My parents were born in the 30s too

1950s wallpaper could be wild

That was awful. His son saw it live on tv.

Alouest · 18/06/2026 22:54

I have to say, no matter how old the OP is, I've really enjoyed this. So thanks @openthefrontdoor!

Corinthiana · 18/06/2026 22:55

You must have been well off to buy your own car at 18. Did you work full-time?

Alouest · 18/06/2026 22:58

OtterLovesItsRock · 18/06/2026 22:52

The vivid wallpaper was when the OP was a teenager so could absolutely be 70s if she was born in the 50s.

OtterLovesItsRock · 18/06/2026 23:00

@openthefrontdoor were women's trousers front fastening or side fastening when you were a child or teenager?

Did you have a kaleidoscope to play with?

Did you ever use a slate?

Metalmotha · 18/06/2026 23:04

I didn't realise that.

I remember watching the news where they were taking his assassin out and he stated that he regretted his actions. I recall Dad saying "Aye, you regret it now..."

If her mother wss born in 1913 and had a child at 27, OP would be born in 1940 and a teenager in the 1950s.

In my family circle, women born before the war were having children from mid-late teens through to their 40s. 20 plus years of pregnancies. Double figures of pregnancies, with 8 to 12 surviving children in some cases. Some had children younger than their grandchildren, i.e. were pregnant at the same time as their daughters / daughters in law.

If OP's mother was born in 1913 and had her at 47, OP would have been born in 1960, and a teenager in the 1970s.

But the guessing game and spirit of fun reminds me of the 1950s women I know/knew. They were ace at innocent fun.

True. I think it was also quite soon after JFK and everyone was in shock.

bigTillyMint · 18/06/2026 23:19

Well I remember/did just about everything you’ve mentioned and I’m 61 but that would make your mother 51 when she had you which seems a bit unlikely.
68?

I think she's about 61, and was adopted by older parents.

You'd remember how cold and dark everything was though - not like the inflation which children could be unaware of.
If there was no telly you'd feel it!

I remember power cuts and candles but I don't remember being cold and we didn't have central heating then. was it just the electric that was cut because we had gas fires and a gas oven and I have a vague recollection we cooked the next door neighbour's tea for them because they had an electric oven.

That's what I remember too, so you could be right.

I knew about the 3 day week. I was 9-10 at the time. We had the Daily Express every day and I was an avid reader. But we had regular power cuts anyway, due to living on a farm and a dodgy transformer, so if there were power cuts due to the 3 day week, as children we wouldn't have realised.

I remember much of what the OP does. I also remember the three day week and the power cuts but not that the power cuts were arduous. At my grandmas there was oil fired CH and parafin lamps. At ours, we had gas fires in the sitting room and in the bedrooms.

I'm 66 and I guess the op's mum could have had her in 1960 at 47 but I imagine the op is a little older. I remember much that the op does:

Old money, but had more than 6d pocket money
My mum did have a crimplene dress but it was a mini!
Bright decor in my bedroom
Aberfan is my first news memory
Dixon of Dock Green
Listen with Mother
Jackie
We always had a TV but got a colour one for the PoW's investiture
I remember the Beatles but my music was Glam Rock; my mum more Nat King Cole and Sinatra
Smoking was normal and we could in 6th Form
£24k in Bedford sound about right for a house in the mod 80s.

There are so many things in common that whilst I initially thought the op was mid 70s, I'm revising that to a little bit older than me, only because 47 seems too old for a first child. I'd say 68/69.

I think the op and I were the last of an era and the world changed significantly for those born a year or two later.

My mum was born in 1936, her crimplene frocks were Quant style, worn with a chain belt and white summer boots!
