Guess my age

openthefrontdoor · 18/06/2026 14:32

No this isn't going to be one of those threads where I post a photograph and ask you to say how old you think I look.

I just thought for a bit of fun for anyone who like me has too much time on their hands, I would post a few facts about myself and see if you can guess my age.

I will post odd random facts over the next day, then tell you my age tomorrow.

This is a new user name, in case I have mentioned my age in previous post.

Fact 1) My mother used to wear dresses made of crimplene.

Fact 2) My father used to ride a bike and wore cycle clips to stop his trousets from getting caught in the cycle chain.

I get where you are coming from but it really was normal at one time.

We had a 6th form smoking area in 1994!

Nottogetapenny · 18/06/2026 22:17

I love this thread. It’s bringing back lots of memories, of things I remember when I was young!

LaMarschallin · 18/06/2026 22:08

Ooh!
Younger than I thought then.
Dramatically going down from 79 to 63.

OP is very unlikely to be 63 because her mum was born before the first world war started. If OP is 63 she was born around 1962 or 63 which would make her mum at least 49 and probably over 50 at the time of her birth. This would be vanishingly rare at that time. The Tressy doll came out in the UK in 1964. If it was OP's favourite childhood toy, OP was born at least 5 years before that. I resorted to google for the Tressy thing. I had a Silky doll in the 70s which was similar!

Gonners · 18/06/2026 20:48

Okay, on the basis of that I'm going to change my guess to 90!

Smoking waa fairly.normal up untill the late 90s even hospitals had smoking rooms so i can well belive 6th formers were allowed to smoke for a lot longer than you would think.

Fair enough.
I did say in my 1st post I hadn't read everything.
Imagine how crushed I am not to be spot on though 😔

My favourite childhood birthday or Christmas presents were a Tressy doll (her hair grows) and Spirograph.

I was so upset when 'Santa' got me Spirotot instead of Spirograph. I was extremely insulted.

Although she doesn't remember the Three Day Week and all those powecuts and shops closed, which was 1974.

Corinthiana · 18/06/2026 22:32

Do you remember inflation hitting 24%? My parents were so stressed because money started to get very tight indeed and they got fearful that it was going to be out of control.

Arghhh!
I dunno then.
Maybe she's just got a really bad memory?
Somewhere between 29 and 80 (as am I).
That's my final guess and I bet I'm right!

You're probably right!
However, if she'd lived through it, she'd remember it!

Yes, that is weird. I remember the powercuts and I was very small, maybe reception age. But OP absolutely cannot be the same age as me based on her mum's birthdate. So I'm assuming she just wasn't someone who paid much attention to the news or maybe the adults around her didn't discuss it.

It's probably something I should remember, but my memory is a bit hazy about it.

I remember high inflation rates, although I couldn't tell you exact percentage rates.

Yes. I just remember how cold and dark everything was. At school we kept our coats on and the teacher checked our work with a torch. Doing homework by candlelight. No tv!

All the adults talked about it, I think it had such a terrible impact, the cost of living shot up, food prices in particular rose swiftly. Tough times for many.

Yes! And I remember candles at home in the evenings. We had a piano and if my grandma was there she used to play Chopin and it was so exciting (she was really good).

@openthefrontdoor do you remember the assassination of JFK?

openthefrontdoor · 18/06/2026 22:40

I do remember power cuts and having to use candles, but I cannot specifically remember the shops only being open 3 days a week. Perhaps as some of you have said, I just have a bad memory.

You'd remember how cold and dark everything was though - not like the inflation which children could be unaware of.
If there was no telly you'd feel it!

Alouest · 18/06/2026 22:41

Maybe the shops not being open didn't impact on you much, @openthefrontdoor - you were a child so it probably wasn't your problem! I can't remember them not being open either.

Violinorbanjo · 18/06/2026 22:42

Well....unless they had you when they were 80, you are 80

Someone else asked about JFK and I don't really remember it, but perhaps my parents didn't want to worry me with the death of a US president. I perhaps should recall it.

I don't know about the telly. I don't remember being super interested in it at that time. It was minuscule and black and white!! The screen might have been about the same size as an iPad. I do think you'd remember having candles on and how cold it was. I remember both.

openthefrontdoor · 18/06/2026 22:45

Sorry if I'm confusing any of you by things that happened that I should perhaps recall, but can't.

I'm off to bed soon, but will tell you all tomorrow how old I am.

Oh wait, you weren't a small child. You might have been an older teenager.

So confused!
