Guess my age

No this isn't going to be one of those threads where I post a photograph and ask you to say how old you think I look.

I just thought for a bit of fun for anyone who like me has too much time on their hands, I would post a few facts about myself and see if you can guess my age.

I will post odd random facts over the next day, then tell you my age tomorrow.

This is a new user name, in case I have mentioned my age in previous post.

Fact 1) My mother used to wear dresses made of crimplene.

Fact 2) My father used to ride a bike and wore cycle clips to stop his trousets from getting caught in the cycle chain.

Can you remember George VI being king? (Or his brother and father being king?)

Not guessing your age, OP, but just wanted to thank you for the trip down Memory Lane! Jackie, the Monkees, Dixon of Dock Green, Green Shield stamps, Listen with Mother... Do you remember the Black and White Minstrels? 🫣😬 and using a coat hanger as a TV aerial?

Lovely that your mum is still around 💗

Yes, I do recall the black and white minstrels.

My mum is sadly no longer alive. I said she was born before the first world war broke out, so she would be well over 110 if she were still alive now.

Actually, I do recall - it's the answer to the meaning of life, isn't it?

Yy, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy!

Anyway, I reckon 85/86

74 possibly.

DelphiniumBlue · 18/06/2026 17:59

I think having the Beatles as your favourite band would make you a teenager in the 60s. Liking Jackie magazine, which I think was aimed roughly at 14 year olds , and which wasn’t published till ‘64 .. would guess that puts you at 14 in about ‘66, which makes you 74 now.

openthefrontdoor · 18/06/2026 17:59

Next clue - my first car was a second hand MG 1300 and I paid £200 for it. I'm not going to tell you the year, as that would give you too much of a clue, as I bought it at age 18 or 19.

Sorry, I must have misread something upthread (and am crap at maths!!).

I used to love eavesdropping on the party line. They used to catch on, and tell me to hang up, and I wouldn't 🫣

Ah, the answer to the Ultimate Question!

AnnieRich · 18/06/2026 18:10

I can relate so much to this , Op. 74?

Vivid wallpaper suggests a 70s childhood

so I’m going for 64

on the basis I had vivid wallpaper ( orange and brown ) but barely remember it so if you remember it I think you may be a little older than me
My parents were born in the 30s too

Orange and brown! So Biba! My bedroom had a lot of orange, and my sisters had a lot of Biba things!

openthefrontdoor · 18/06/2026 18:13

My next clue is very niche, but it might help someone who used to work in Boots back in the day.

I had a Saturday job in Boots from age 16 - 18 and the uniform was a pink overall with a wide navy blue stripe down the middle.

I think this is the year of your 80th birthday.

Loving the stroll down memory lane, thank you.

66

PersonOnTheInside · 18/06/2026 18:16

Hmmm, I now think you're not as old as I first guessed.

Mainly linked to your facts about readership of Jackie, being able to vote at 18 and the price of your first property.

So I'm revising my guess to... 73
