Where can I get a slice of really nice Black Forest Gateau.

Returned recently from a European holiday where I had the most delicious Black Forest gateau (every day). Have tried to find a nice one in the uk but can’t seem to source a good one. Looking for a light sponge with cherries in kirsch and fresh cream.

Tremendous thread - good luck op
(slight change of subject but I had a chocolate eclair yesterday - a very under rated cake imo)

I know that your oven won’t let you bake a sponge. However what I’d do is try to find a friend/niece or whatever who would bake literally a plain chocolate sponge. Or maybe even ask a bakery - just for the plain cake. Then I would collect it and customise it with the absolute best of cherries, kirsch and cream. It’s my birthday today so I’ve started off with an almond croissant then will have other cakes later

Glad to see this thread is still going (important stuff people). I was eyeing up that massive Black Forest gateau in m and s just yesterday but I resisted as it looked too big (I am on wegovy) but also just too too rich with that chocolate icing. It didn’t appeal. The search continues. Otherwise I will need to time travel back to the 1970s .... last resort.

Watching this thread with interest. It’s my 50th birthday in mid-September so would really appreciate it if OP could crack on with the search project and find the perfect one in time for me to order one. Will try to contribute to the research between now and then. 🤞

🤣. Well it’s the weekend so will be cracking on with the cause. Cake Box and Blackbird Bakery next on the list.

Morrisons sometimes have it in the bakery section where I am, anyway. It won’t be as good as it is in Germany but it’s not bad for supermarket cake - it’ll be better than the Iceland one anyway.

Morrisons also do an amazing chocolate, cream and cherry muffin type thing, in a pack of two. In the fridge section. It’s not a Black Forest gateau in style but when you have a mouthful it tastes the same!

Just sticking my head in to say I had another piece of the BFG (big friendly gateaux) from Blackbird after my yoga class last week…. It doesn’t have a boozey element but the tart cherries, moist sponge and icing are 💋💋💋

Presumably you've tried the frozen supermarket types?

This one is alcohol free so not for me.

I’m invested - love a bit of BFG

SaraHoliday · 16/06/2026 09:11

Me too! It doesn't get better than BFG!

For those who fancy making one there was this thread a few months back! It devolved to its just easier to make one!
As a thought regarding your oven OP it might be worth getting a proper thermometer and see if it’s actually getting to the temperature it claims, a bit here or there doesn’t tend to matter with savoury but it really does need to be spot on for cakes, so this might be your issue.
