Where can I get a slice of really nice Black Forest Gateau.

Returned recently from a European holiday where I had the most delicious Black Forest gateau (every day). Have tried to find a nice one in the uk but can’t seem to source a good one. Looking for a light sponge with cherries in kirsch and fresh cream.

It may not compare OP but the best generally available one I’ve found is the Patisserie Valerie one in Sainsburys.

And now I want one 😁

GuelderRoses · 19/05/2026 13:55

I was going to suggest Patisserie Valerie as well. We used to go to one of their London shops in the early days and everything was staggeringly good. Then they expanded to corporate, and it all went a bit mass-produced.

SusieMyersonAndAssociates · 19/05/2026 14:00

Agreed. Patisserie Valerie would have been it 10 years ago but not now sadly.

Paul maybe? Or other independent patisseries. Failing that, could you try and make one?

endash · 19/05/2026 14:04

i remember going to the original Patisserie Valerie in Soho when I first moved to London in the early 90s - the gateaux were delicious, and the whole experience felt very ‘lingering 1960s London’. Then the expansion happened, and everything tasted of polystyrene.

God, that makes me feel old.

I don't think Cook do a Black Forest, I'd be on it, if they did.

I have no ideas but I do agree with the former brilliance of Pat Val, and it's now just airy fakery.

I also now desperately want one.

TenTenTenAgain · 19/05/2026 14:08

I don't know how authentic it is , but my husband really likes lolas black forest cake.

CaptainBeefheartspal · 19/05/2026 14:09

Tried Sainsbury’s, Patisserie Valerie and even the Iceland one (best avoided). I do have a Cook nearby so will try there. I live near London so hoping for any bakery/patisserie recommendations there too.

The Cook one was just at Christmas, the link above is sold out.

CaptainBeefheartspal · 19/05/2026 14:11

Sadly the Cook one is no longer available (and is made with cream cheese but I’d still try it).

With all the hysterical Riders tie-ins clogging the supermarkets, I can’t believe Waitrose hasn’t launched a mega Black Forest Gateau limited edition.

Make it yourself?

kellygoeswest · 19/05/2026 14:15

Lola's do a very nice one, although I think you have to order the whole cake.

CaptainBeefheartspal · 19/05/2026 14:21

I’ve got a rubbish oven unfortunately so it wouldn't work well cooking it myself.

hairyunicorn · 19/05/2026 14:26

Have you tried any of the Cake Box shops?

CaptainBeefheartspal · 19/05/2026 14:27

Have seen one that might work at The Pantry in Dalston (E London). However it’s a denser cake rather than a light sponge. In the interests of research, I’ll pick one up and report back later in the week.

Try Costco!

I mourn Pat Val on Frith Street.

CaptainBeefheartspal · 19/05/2026 14:29

No I haven’t ever been in a Cake Box shop. I thought they used artificial cream but no idea why I thought that! We have one fairly close by so will try there too.

It’s really easy to DIY it yourself, buy a nice chocolate cake, some fresh whipping cream and fresh cherries. The cherry syrup is simple to make; boil a few mashed cherries with some sugar and strain. 😋 🍒 🍫

VividDeer · 19/05/2026 14:45

Cake box has amazing cream cakes, but I can't imagine they would use real kirsch
