Returned recently from a European holiday where I had the most delicious Black Forest gateau (every day). Have tried to find a nice one in the uk but can’t seem to source a good one. Looking for a light sponge with cherries in kirsch and fresh cream.

Marks and Spencer do a frozen one £15

Lola's do a very nice one, although I think you have to order the whole cake.

They do indeed. I ordered a big 2 tier one for my birthday last year and it was surprisingly great for a shop bought cake! Dd usually makes me a blackforest birthday cake but selfishly was at uni 😂 (she did come for my party but didn’t have time for 2 days of baking!)

I was going to suggest Patisserie Valerie as well. We used to go to one of their London shops in the early days and everything was staggeringly good. Then they expanded to corporate, and it all went a bit mass-produced.

I agree with you - a visit to Patisserie Valerie was my little treat to me when I visited London.
Then it went to sh*t. ☹️

Caffe Concerto ?
They are similar to PV.

M&S do a cake inspired by black forest gateaux Its not traditional but its a good alternative.

Overwhelmedandneedadvice · 19/05/2026 18:02

The cake box used to a nice one (about 2/3 years ago). Haven’t travelled that way since so not sure if they still sell it!

Slice? You’re adorable…

😂

CaptainBeefheartspal · 19/05/2026 18:28

Going to make it my mission to try all of the these suggestions, thank you. Unfortunately I can’t make a sponge in my oven - they never rise properly amd I’ve tried all sorts of sponge recipes, tins and mixers . It’s really frustrating.

Where are you based OP? Blackbird bakery in south London does a fantastic BFG.

Going to start with Blackbird Bakery and then Cake Box and branch out to the other London venues. I also go to the coast and the Midlands quite often so will branch out after that 😀

A good BFG is a beautiful thing. I used to like the one at Maids of Honour in Kew but they’ve messed around with the recipe and they’re weirdly sour now, like they’ve added citric acid.
To be fair the other cakes there are lovely.
At my first job in London I used to be sent to PV in Marylebone HS for a cake whenever anyone had a birthday. Their cakes were the gold standard for many years.

Gowlett · 19/05/2026 18:38

Is PV the only cake shop in the UK?
I do remember the original one from my London days.
An independent local bakery, maybe?
Do any supermarkets have a nice bakery?
In Ireland, Staffords are fresh supermarket cakes, their Black Forest is quite good!

Gowlett · 19/05/2026 18:39

I really fancy a nice slice of BFG now!

QueenRefusenik · 19/05/2026 18:41

What I do is buy nice chocolate cake and add (shedloads of) whipped cream and most of a jar of Opie's cherries in kitsch (I get them from ocado but most supermarkets do tinned cherries). The downside is this means DS (otherwise a fruit refuser) will eat the chocolate cake and cream too, sigh

GuelderRoses · 19/05/2026 18:44

@Gowlett PV expanded far too quickly, got into serious fraud financial trouble and went spectacularly bust several years ago.

Remnants of the business was bought out so they only have a very small presence now.

Teakettletrio · 19/05/2026 18:50

@CaptainBeefheartspal if you can get the Elizabeth line to west London there is the most amazing Black Forest gateau roulade made in a cake shop in Hanwell. It’s called Pan’s Bake Shop.

Mumandcarer80 · 19/05/2026 19:10

Morrisons used to do a really nice twin pack not slices but 2 portions. It seems to have gone off the website. I love a black forest gateau.

I did black forest trifles for our Christmas Day dessert. They were really nice got some cherry compote from booths and some frozen cherries.

DuellingBanjos · 19/05/2026 19:13

If I remember rightly, there’s a really good German bakery down Camden Passage in Angel, Islington. My German friend took me there.

chillyputsomesockson · 19/05/2026 19:20

OP you’re going to have to report back when you try them at these places as BFG is my absolute favourite and I’d travel for a decent one! 😁

JumpingPumpkin · 19/05/2026 19:21

Where have you come back from OP? I want to go there.

DuellingBanjos · 19/05/2026 19:22

Otherwise, the Gerrman Gymnasium restaurant near Kings Cross.

Mumandcarer80 · 19/05/2026 19:27

.

Mumandcarer80 · 19/05/2026 19:29

Found the Morrisons ones that picture doesn’t do them justice. They are crammed with cream and really nice.

Yes, they opened in Dublin as part of Debenhams, but didn’t last long! There was other much nicer (and cheaper) cake shops nearby.

It could be Kipferl. In Camden passage off upper st angel islington. It is super delish but I think it’s actually Austrian cakes if that’s the one you’re thinking of.....

Quite surprised at the number of posts saying “just make one”.

BFG isn't like knocking out a quick Victoria sponge. It's a serious amount of faffing about.
