Where can I get a slice of really nice Black Forest Gateau.

Returned recently from a European holiday where I had the most delicious Black Forest gateau (every day). Have tried to find a nice one in the uk but can’t seem to source a good one. Looking for a light sponge with cherries in kirsch and fresh cream.

Ok, trying this Patisserie Valerie one. Sponge looks a bit dry.

Disappointing- sponge too thick and dry and not the slightest hint of any kirsch in the cherry of which there was only one. Compote in the layer was tasteless.
Next try will be the cake box one.

That looks really underwhelming.

This was the original one from a wonderful cafe in Prague where they served from a cake trolley. It was a very light sponge and cream studded with kirsch soaked cherries. It was the best BFG I’ve ever tasted.

I wonder if they had added a bit of syrup/cherry syrup to the sponge? Looks amazing either way

OP @CaptainBeefheartspal have you had the chance to try the Blackbird Bakery cake yet? Pls report back

Love this thread ! Keep going !

Tesco do a cheap as chips frozen one that I always put out on birthdays. It won’t be anywhere near as good as your Prague one but it’s light, creamy, chocolately and everyone always enjoys it and asks where I got it from!

HildegardVonBingham · 06/06/2026 12:44

Cake a bit squashed from its walk home from the bakery but tastes heavenly !!

I'm also craving it now!

Sadly not yet but just getting ready to go to one of the German cafe’s mentioned earlier in the thread. It’s raining too - true dedication to the cause. Will post a pic later.

I have serious BFG cravings now.

CaptainBeefheartspal · 07/06/2026 11:07

Well this one at Stein Berlin was another disappointment. Far too much cream (although it was light), a bit of cherry syrup in the sponge but no kirsch flavour. The sponge didn’t have a strong chocolate taste and was too thin. It was £8.95 with service on top!

Felicity Cloake did a ‘perfect BFG’ article and I made one for DH’s 50th birthday- a bit of retro-chic! It turned out well but did involve buying a spring-loaded cake tin, wrestling with sweet pastry which I had never made before (bottom layer of an authentic BFG - who knew?) and scouring the shops for proper sour morello cherries in a not-too-sweetened syrup.

I agree that’s way too much cream but thanks for taking one for the team!!!!

This is from Blackbird Bakery - I think they might only be in South London. If you get the train south from London Bridge to Queens Road Peckham there is a Blackbird in one of the arches under the train station. If you make a pilgrimage there let me know - I go to the yoga studio next door and love getting a piece of BFG to go!!!

This is kind of like the one I got in my local bakery (I am in Germany) but nothing like the one I made on a school trip to the Black Forest in 1989.

IfyouStealMySunshine · 09/06/2026 22:32

I brought it up today at work and told people to say it in to their phones - up the algorithm I say in favour of Black Forest gateaux. I mean we’ve had a run on Oreo related things, biscoff. Pistachios is big too surely BFG will come back around?

SomersetBrie · 10/06/2026 19:46

Thanks to this thread, I now have a huge Marks and Spencer BFG in my freezer. Eaten one slice - delicious though not very cherry. I had it with a few blueberries on the side.
Looking forward to eating the other 7 slices!

deeahgwitch · Yesterday 08:45

I almost took one for the team yesterday in Tesco.
I was standing in front of the frozen cake cabinet and saw a Black Forest Gateau. Then I remembered I need to lose 2 stone.
I resisted the temptation to buy and test it for you @CaptainBeefheartspal
Apologies.

CookingNonna · Yesterday 20:18

Actually, I’ve tried the Tesco one and the Waitrose one and they’re nothing special. I want real dark chocolate and tart alcoholically cherries.
