Where can I get a slice of really nice Black Forest Gateau.

Returned recently from a European holiday where I had the most delicious Black Forest gateau (every day). Have tried to find a nice one in the uk but can’t seem to source a good one. Looking for a light sponge with cherries in kirsch and fresh cream.

You could try these for the taste. Good reviews. They do have Black Forest on Yumbles but it’s the cheese frosting with posting them.

Whereabouts were you on holiday? Was it somewhere in Germany? I would love overseas recommendations for a Black Forest gateau!

I might be easily pleased but I love the catering one they serve at the ROH 😄

Ooh is that the Royal Opera House? I’ve never eaten or had a drink there, but would love to.

Just make one!

They are pretty easy to make and freeze too so you could freeze sections for eating later.

for 20cm sandwich pans

chocolate sponge
8oz sugar
8oz butter or baking spread
4 eggs beaten
6oz sr flour
1tsp baking powder
2 oz cocoa powder

cream butter and spread, add beaten eggs, add dry ingredients and bake in greased pans at 190/180 fan gas mark 5 for 17-20 minutes.

check cooked through and cool.

either buy morello cherry jam or make your own

once cooled pour on kirsch to taste. Whip double cream, put a layer of cream and jam between the layers top with more cream and top with preserved cherries if you can get them and shavings of dark chocolate.

you can also make in as a loaf cake which is great for portioning and freezing

I'd find a local artisan baker and commission one. Or buy the pieces and assemble your own. Then you don't have to bake but still get the best of everything.

Sigh… it’s going to be tough but someone has to do it.

🤣 🤷‍♀️

You can buy bags of frozen cherries in Waitrose or Sainsbury’s, otherwise jars or Opies cherries in Kirsch.

Following with interest. Haven't had a decent slice since the 80s.

Side note but I wish Costa would bring back the Black Forest Hot Chocolate.

I remembered there are other places in Wolseley group that do BFG - Fischers cafe in Marylebone and the Delaunay Counter - Aldwych.

Dunns in Muswell Hill

I’d love to find a really good passion cake too !

Defiantly41 · 20/05/2026 18:53

@WhisperingAngelisnotbadme too, although a Gail’s Bakery flourless chocolate cake, lightly warmed and drizzled with kirsch and bottled cherries topped with crème fraiche would be absolutely demolished here!

msmillicentcat · 20/05/2026 19:01

Caffe Concerto definitely do it, but they tend to be quite London centric and you might have to order a whole cake. Their fresh cakes to order are really good, much better than PV.

Calliopespa · 20/05/2026 19:04

Just buy rich chocolate brownie/cake and plonk it in a bowl with kirsch cherries and cream trifle style

It doesn't need to be all layered up for slices and you can choose the best cherries, best cake, freshest cream this way.

Awfulinlaws · 20/05/2026 20:59

Make an ice cream bowl. Really good dark chocolate ice cream, stewed cherries, cream, chocolate flakes. Kirsch if you want to, whipped into the cream. Trying to lose weight but will make this a few times this summer.

That's what I like to do too! I actually prefer the flavours when made with ice-cream to cake. Not telling which chocolate ice cream I use as it is constantly out of stock and I don't want to make that more of a problem!😉But go for a dark one.
