Where can I get a slice of really nice Black Forest Gateau.

Returned recently from a European holiday where I had the most delicious Black Forest gateau (every day). Have tried to find a nice one in the uk but can’t seem to source a good one. Looking for a light sponge with cherries in kirsch and fresh cream.

No I haven’t ever been in a Cake Box shop. I thought they used artificial cream but no idea why I thought that! We have one fairly close by so will try there too.

They are egg free. The list of ingredients is pretty horrific! Never looked before.

Cake box has amazing cream cakes, but I can't imagine they would use real kirsch

I agree , I believe their cakes are halal.

Are you in a big town or a city? You'll find some Polish bakeries that sells various cakes by the weight. I had the same cake in a Polish restaurant recently and it was absolutely lovely - light and airy.

Bake one yourself! It’s a super simple cake and there are so many slight variations so you’ll have the chance to find out what works best for you!

and you can impress your guests :)

Morrisons sometimes have it in the bakery section where I am, anyway. It won’t be as good as it is in Germany but it’s not bad for supermarket cake - it’ll be better than the Iceland one anyway.

There is a little bakers on the main street through Newquay, Cornwall. Whenever we go there i have a slice of BFG and a prawn or crab sandwich. Morrisons also used do a black forest muffin which was quite nice.... although not really a gateaux. I make a Black Forest Eton mess but only ever at Christmas.... but I feel I may need to indulge.

I like Morrisons bakery fresh cream section - they take it quite seriously and it’s delightfully retro.

I also like the idea of taking a good bought chocolate cake, and tarting it up with cherries, kirsch and fresh cream.

I had a lovely slice at the Sea Lane Cafe at Goring-by-sea last summer if you happen to be down there!

@TaffyandTeenyTaffy - Black Forest Eton Mess? That sounds amazing! Do you have a particular recipe?

Portakalkedi · 19/05/2026 16:23

Tesco do a frozen one, which is pretty good.

Linenspots · 19/05/2026 16:27

I'd love to know as well. Sainsbury's do this, but believe me, you'll be bitterly disappointed!

I used to love a bloody good black forest gateau back in the 80s. Sara Lee used to do a great one.

I'm now thinking of buying a fairly decent chocolate fudge cake, a tin of Princes black cherry pie filling, kirsch, whipping cream, grate some chocolate and concoct my own version!!!

tealandteal · 19/05/2026 16:27

I have found the only way to get a really nice one is to make it.

Animatic · 19/05/2026 16:31

I just searched on deliveroo; there is quite a few options coming up.

TheKittenswithMittens · 19/05/2026 16:44

Germany

GranolaBaker · 19/05/2026 16:57

I googled using the German name (one of the few bits I remember from school) and found this cafe in London : berlininkensington.stein-s.com

Glittertwins · 19/05/2026 16:58

Delaunay Counter in London. They have lovely cakes.

Converse4Ever · 19/05/2026 17:01

I’d also like to know. I only want a slice. I must hunt one down when I am in London this year.

Busybeemumm · 19/05/2026 17:03

The cake box one is nice.

FredaMountfitchet · 19/05/2026 17:07

Bake one .
Surely wee Mary Berry will have a recipe

UndoRedo · 19/05/2026 17:18

Sainsburys do a nice cherry compote, I'm wondering how I could use this to make one. Least decent one I had was actually in the Black Forest 😔

HildegardVonBingham · 19/05/2026 17:42

Where are you based OP? Blackbird bakery in south London does a fantastic BFG.
