Returned recently from a European holiday where I had the most delicious Black Forest gateau (every day). Have tried to find a nice one in the uk but can’t seem to source a good one. Looking for a light sponge with cherries in kirsch and fresh cream.

You’re just going to have to sample loads from different shops, OP. What a terrible time you’re going to have! 😋😁

Sigh… it’s going to be tough but someone has to do it.

Oh no. I shouldn’t have read this. I live in Germany and haven’t had a slice for ages. Maybe a trip to the bakery for a traditional Kaffee und Kuchen tomorrow afternoon.

Those of you saying use a shop bought choc fudge cake to start with, I’m intrigued - how do you zshoozsh it up? Just drench it in kitsch once you’ve layered cream and cherries?

MaybeIamJustABitch · 19/05/2026 20:10

I share your love of BFG @CaptainBeefheartspal! I live a backwater of a town in the East Mids and there is NOWHERE that sells a slice, let alone a whole gateau.

I had such a hankering a few months ago that DH actually made one from scratch, albeit without the kirsch. 😫

When you find ‘the one’, send me a slice in the post would you? 😂

I’d look at all the normal recipes, and skip forward to the bits after they’ve done baking the cake and slicing it into layers. Then do all that bit!

How to make the perfect black forest gateau

Felicity Cloake: Is black forest gateau a much maligned work of Germanic genius, or a dish best left with steak diane back in 1976?

A bit off topic but a shop local to me do a gorgeous scented candle called Black Forest.
But you can’t eat it. 😀

Cream cheese?! over my dead Bavarian body.

ChocolateApples · 19/05/2026 21:17

Make one. Delia Smith's recipe is excellent.

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 19/05/2026 21:24

I used to love black forest gateau but it's a very 1980s thing and hard to find now. If you buy a bottle of kirsch and some tinned black cherries, you could make one. There's lots of recipes online

It could be Kipferl. In Camden passage off upper st angel islington. It is super delish but I think it’s actually Austrian cakes if that’s the one you’re thinking of.....

Ooooh, I had a sachertorte from there during Covid, I ordered it online.
Was delicious.

I like Morrisons bakery fresh cream section - they take it quite seriously and it’s delightfully retro.

I also like the idea of taking a good bought chocolate cake, and tarting it up with cherries, kirsch and fresh cream.

They do a big fresh chocolate muffin, with black cherries in the middle and fresh cream on.. very Black Forest-y and heavenly!!

want….. 🤤

GuelderRoses · 19/05/2026 21:41

I like a chocolate gateau. A lot.

But I don't like cherries...

<weeps forlornly>

caringcarer · 19/05/2026 21:41

A garden centre near to me does it.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 19/05/2026 21:44

Saw one in Farmfoods last week.

Ooh - I will browse the section with more intent!

I’m owed a good cream cake. I ordered the “banana biscoff giant choux bun” in Marciano lounge last week, and it was so disappointing. The cream was, I think, squirty. Just no substance at all. The biscoff was in nasty dust crumbs all over the top and made it all gritty. The two slices of banana were quite nice. Gave it to my teen.

Im so happy I stumbled on this thread I love Black Forest gateau.
I’m going to Newquay this summer and I’m absolutely going to look in that bakery that was suggested further up.

Moneypennywise · 19/05/2026 21:54

Paul had the most amazing boozy blackforest gateau but for some unknown reason discontinued it.

Cafe Concerto’s version is identical to Patisserie Valerie before it went downhill. It’s the most traditional one I’ve found.

Lola’s does cupcake and mini cupcake versions, you don’t have to buy a whole cake - minis are the best, gone in one bite!

M&S frozen gateau was a bit wet when defrosted per instructions, disappointing.

Now I have to investigate all the other recommendations 😋

WilfredsPies · 19/05/2026 21:56

DontbesuchanarseGlenda · 19/05/2026 13:42

It may not compare OP but the best generally available one I’ve found is the Patisserie Valerie one in Sainsburys.

And now I want one 😁

This one disappointed me so much. It looked so promising but was utterly tasteless.

If You can’t get to an independent bakery that does them, I recommend the M&S frozen one. It’s very chocolatey but the sponge isn’t heavy and there’s enough cherry so that you aren’t getting overwhelmed by the chocolate. Definitely better than Morrisons.

Do Morrisons still do Festival gateau ? God I loved that!!

OP you need to go to Baden Baden. Best Black Forest ever!

OnTheBoardwalk · 19/05/2026 22:02

Why do people not like cherry and Black Forest these days?

I love it

Aluna · 19/05/2026 22:05

The place to have BFG is the Wolesley. They have an all day menu so you don’t have to eat a full meal. Menu

WhisperingAngelisnotbad · 19/05/2026 22:07

Most chocolate cake would be too sweet for me, but I am made very happy by Opies bottles cherries with kirsch, eaten with fresh pouring cream.

WhisperingAngelisnotbad · 19/05/2026 22:11

As regards Cake Box sponge, I think it is made without eggs. It is very light, but is strangely tasteless, with an artificial foam quality. I suspect that there isn't a huge amount of chocolate in the chocolate sponge. We got one for my DC's birthday one time, as I far prefer fresh cream cakes to sugary icing. It looked beautiful, but there was not much enthusiasm to go back there!

TenTenTenAgain · 19/05/2026 22:12

@Aluna I pictured the big friendly giant when I read your post!

Does black forest gateau have snozzcumber in it?
