It's a long story but industry watchers States side have had their eyes on Spirit as being the next airline to go in the US for a long time....not brilliantly managed, didn't really recover.post Covid...other issues as well.

Oil/fuel price going through the roof was probably the final nail...now that can be blamed on POTUS but it's far from the only reason.

Yes. Low cost airline. It has been on the verge of collapse for years. That is their business model. Undercut on cost.

What I found odd is that Trump was considering nationalizing it. What ethical nightmare that would be. A state owned airline with a business model of undercutting other airlines, picking the cream routes and trying to put other airlines out of business.

To me, a nationalized airline would be the reliable one. Serving the small communities that likes of spirit would not touch. And paying for these loss-making routes by being the "prestige" choice on the popular ones.

RedTagAlan · 03/05/2026 03:00

Wots this then ?

Ahh. It's not the goalposts being moved. It's a new goal. One that has barely been mentioned. Certainly not in any of the "official reasons".

Now it's about payback/ punishment for what they have done to "humanity". So now it is a punitive war? Not about Nukes at all ?

I reckon Trump is going to end up with a logical fallacy named after him. The Trump logical fallacy. Just totally change the rules. Like playing Pontoon cards, then suddenly yelling "SNAP, I WIN". In this case, it's pontoon, his opponent has 18, and without showing his hand, Trump says he is playing a different game. Would that be a variation on Texas Sharpshooter ?

Thank you very much for that interesting explanation, @notimagain. Much as I would like to, I suppose I can't blame Trump for all that, and COVID.

I guess it's what he meant by winning by a bigger margin. Trump's vindictive nature as US foreign policy.
If a Chinese flagged ship, loaded in Iran exited the SoH what would he do?
(Not that the Chinese wouldn't be this obvious in testing US resolve).

I see that Trump has not yet had his annual medical check-up.

The Villages sounds like hell on earth.

Lots of well off old people wearing shorts and driving around in golf buggies with Trump flags flying.

Hellish for sure. Probably still beats Milton Keynes though.

countrygirl99 · 03/05/2026 09:05

Oi. Some parts of Milton Keynes are quite nice.

I'm not saying they are(were) unsafe.

However if your companies main mission was to send people to meet their maker, it's hard to think of a better brand than "Spirit".

This image. Definitely not Liz Oyer unless she's recently had the Mar-a-Lago makeover. And considering the things she regularly says about him on Deadline White House, I doubt she'd be invited to the pool party.

How is she supporting her weight with her elbow on the surface of the water?

Looks like the hike in fuel price was the final straw for an unsuccessful UK business model that had been heading downhill before the war.

Oh the ACMI (Aircraft, Crew,Maintenance, Insurance)/wetlease business model can and does work in the UK when times are good, and there a few such companies still seemingly doing OK, such as Titan.

Problem is in a downturn their services might no longer be needed and if they are a small outfit they might not have the financial clout to hedge to the level the majors do, or have the cash reserves to withstand the bills going through the roof.

The Villages sounds like hell on earth.

On holiday in Florida a few years ago, we decided to stop in The Villages for lunch to fill in some time before our early evening flight home. Portmerion it ain't.
I've never seen so many portable oxygen cylinders on the back of golf buggies before
