@logicisall

Carry over from last thread.

It was this line in the article you posted :

"Iran is utterly dependent on selling its oil. "

Is it? That's all I am asking. Is that factually true?

No of course not.

REP22 · Today 12:22

King and Queen due to meet NY Mayor Mamdani (not a Royal fan I understand) later today - be interesting to see what rants spew forth on TS after those pictures appear.

Glad to see that respects are being paid at the 9/11 memorial though. I doubt there will be any mention of how civilian and emergency-response survivors are continuing to suffer further from Trump's health funding cuts (‘Bureaucratic cruelty’: 9/11 responders and survivors shaken by US health cuts | Trump administration | The Guardian).

logicisall · Today 12:53

@RedTagAlan , yes, I would say that the Iranian economy is still largely dependent on its O&G industry. I'm looking not just at oil exports, but agricultural and manufacturing products etc that are derived from the pretroleum industry.
In total, oil, petrochemicals, energy products make up about 70–85% of Iran’s exports.
And then from taxes:
Historically, oil and gas receipts have accounted for around 65% of fiscal revenues. (IMF)

So Iran needs to sell its oil. This is why it will soon have a storage problem as they can't just close off wells to stop production without incurring significant costs.

Cue angry face, invoking God and the bible, blaming Biden and the Dems, epic posturing.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, are scheduled to address the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday morning on the Pentagon’s budget request. It will be the first time that Mr. Hegseth has been questioned by lawmakers since the war in the Middle East started. (NYT)

I saw today that it's day 60 of the war. Any connection ? I thought something happened after 60 days re congress. Paging @AcrossthePond55 :-)

I think @SerendipityJane posted that if there had been continuous fighting for 60 days it can potentially trigger impeachment somehow - I think I questioned whether Trump saying he won after the first day, blockading rather than bombing and pretending they are the ones who won't negotiate will be used in defence.

Spandauer · Today 14:34

60 days is up on Friday.

These will be 2 days of hearings. Under oath (not that it makes a difference to this lot...)

Don't know if the 2 are connected.

I made the mistake of watching the Jon Favreau interview with the DNC Chair, Ken Martin.

If I was in any doubt that the entire Democratic establishment needs to be plowed up, that extinguished it completely. I only recommend watching if you are starting out with low blood pressure.

Not good news.

The ruling could reshape voting all across the South and could boost the Republican majority in the House by an additional 19 seats when compared to 2024 maps.

Constitutionally speaking, under the War Powers Act, at 60 days any military action requires a vote in Congress to continue. HOWEVER, there is a 30 day 'draw down' period IF POTUS certifies the need for it. All this is done by simple majority, and it's a mandatory approval by Congress. There are specific rules for the drawdown, including no further offensive actions.

So we shall see. Will he certify the need for the 30 days? If so, will he abide by its conditions? Or will he give the finger to Congress and just continue on status quo. And if he does, will the Repugs roll over and piss on themselves?

Hmm, let's see...maybe, no, probably, definitely.

I'm sure there will be a flurry of resolutions submitted to Congress to demand a vote and/or to start an impeachment. But with the Repugs in charge, they're all doomed to failure.

It doesn't automatically start an impeachment, but it is grounds for one.

Yes, angry, ignorant man.

"Your hatred for President Trump blinds you," he [Hegseth] adds. In response to legitimate points made by Democratic congressman John Garamendi, about the lack of real achievement in Iran and the "foreseeable" blocking of the SofH.

No actual response to the valid points posed. Just angry denials of recklessness and incompetence. Bluster, rage and misdirection. Again.

Trump could be impeached for a third time, but would it really matter? Would it really change anything? Probably not. History suggests the odds of removal would be very very slim. Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump have all been impeached, but were ultimately acquitted by the United States Senate.

MushMonster · Today 17:23

Another thread! I love the title!

So, no much advance on negotiations, the Strait is STILL closed. By the US?!?!?! I read yesterday that Trump had stated Iran wanted the Strait open....., but now is US who has conditions.....

I have been busy and not able to digest much of what I have quickly read this week.
But are they not showing a bit too much contempt here? Keeping the whole world waiting on them (three parties at war) for their oil, gas and basics ...
They will pay back for the amount of people they are throwing into a regression. The world is watching and will not forget a bit of it. Yet, off they go completely oblivious to it.
