What is something you do even though you know it isn’t good for you?

Sunbathing/not avoiding the sun. I’ve been an outdoors/beach person my whole life. I love nothing more than a hot sunny day outside, swimming, hiking, day at the beach. I don’t want to cover up and hide away from the sun. I don’t want a big hat and sitting in the shade.

I know I have and will continue to age quicker. I know the risk of skin cancer is higher. But on this one I don’t care, the quality of my life is more important to me.

So what are yours?

Just wear decent suncream.

Sugar for me.

Smoking. Really do need to kick the habit. I eat clean, strength train, take supplements, get my steps in etc. Just the one bad habit I can’t seem to kick. I live in Spain, so it’s cheap and socially acceptable here, which makes it harder than in the uk where it’s so expensive and you’re a social pariah!!

Pigtailsandall · Yesterday 19:44

Cleaning my ears with a cotton bud. Absolutely shouldn't do that but so satisfying

cornflakecrunchie · Yesterday 19:45

Ciggies here too! Not enough exercise.
Good diet though & don't drink. Hey, none of us are perfect!

Pepperedpickles · Yesterday 19:48

Eating share bars of chocolate every single day. I just love chocolate and will never give it up.

Taking super strong Cocodamol every night to help me sleep. I get it prescribed on repeat for lupus related pain but I take it mainly because it helps me to drift off in a calm state.

Hereforthecommentz · Yesterday 19:51

Scrolling on mumsnet its such a waste of time just like social media but I still end up doing it! Really need to get a brick phone.

Paveparadiseputupaparkinglot · Yesterday 19:52

Vaping occasionally then throwing it away when I feel guilty. I love the kick it gives me!
Same with a codeine now and then!
Sunbathing… I love a tan but it’s ageing me!

I eat well and exercise, have good blood results so I hope what I do is not too awful!!

Almondbeans · Yesterday 19:53

Smoking.

dcthatsme · Yesterday 19:56

Drinking wine and eating chocolate. Can't give it up!

Elsvieta · Yesterday 20:04

You can just wear sunblock, you know. Why go wrinkly before you have to?

Me? Isolating myself. As bad as smoking, apparently.

Wine - I just love going out and having more than enough glasses of wine or prosecco so binge drinking as well as drinking in general 🍸

Sunbathing - I tan very easily and just love sitting in the sun getting brown. I'm on medication that slightly increases the risk of skin cancer and the hospital nurses always ask if I keep out of the sun, I always say I'll really try but then the sun comes out and... 😬

My husband catches the sun even when he’s sat under a parasol on the beach!
He burns more than me, he’s smothered in high factor sun cream and in the shade!
I don’t use sun cream and I’m not in the shade yet he catches more sun than me!

Crowfinch · Yesterday 20:20

Skimping on sun cream. I do try, but I just hate the feeling of it so much.
Drinking.
Sugar.
Asking Gemini lots of questions.

I had a parent who went down the dementia road from mid 60s, so with potentially 20 years ago, I just need to enjoy the time I have.

I have just done that after having a cigarette 🤦‍♀️

Smoking/vaping. I quit smoking cigarettes and moved to vapes for three years then started again a few months ago. I still vape too. I will quit smoking again before the end of the year but honestly, I love it. A part of me thinks fuck it, just smoke guilt free. I don't drink, I'm active (despite having M.E), I eat healthy and the six people I knew that have died from lung cancer had never smoked in their life!

It’s not just lung cancer though. Several of the older smokers I know have/had emphysema, 3 died as a result. Of the remaining, one has early stage and is on medication, and the other is on 24 x 7 portable oxygen and now has lung lesions as well. It is an unpleasant way to live, and a difficult death.

I never ever burn or tan. never have. I am not a sunbather or sunbed user but I do garden, sit outside and generally enjoy good weather.

I don’t understand why some people are saying coffee is a bad thing ?
I have 2 per day , espresso based drinks like a flat white or a cortado .
I make it at home .
No sugar or sweeteners / syrup .
Things that are bad for me that I do anyway ?
I have maybe 2 or 3 of squares of milk chocolate most days , I never refuse a slice of cake 🍰 if it’s offered .
If I am at a very good bakery I will definitely have some cake , a bun or something like that .
(But I haven’t drunk alcohol for nearly 20 years and I’ve never smoked .
Also I stay out of the sun as much as i possibly can )

Yup- I worked for the NHS for a long time and did one of my placements on a respiratory ward. It was terrifying. All smokers, all had severe COPD.

Some of them could barely walk a few steps without gasping for breath and turning a lovely tinge of blue. The feeling of not being able to get a breath in is horrific. There were also people who got agonisingly painful ulcers that never healed on their toes and fingers (buerger's disease) and then had to start having them amputated. This was due to nicotine constantly inflaming the blood vessels in their extremities causing gangrene and eventually amputations.

It's not just about dying, it's about quality of life too and I dont know why people never acknowledge that.

Coffee is not bad!

idontknowhowtodreamyourdreams · Yesterday 21:04

Serious coffee habit. Snacking on crap.

scalt · Yesterday 21:28

@TittyGajillions In what way is trainers sockless bad for you? According to Mumsnet, it’s grim. Blisters. Stinky feet. As a kid, I was told my shoes would walk off by themselves. But I don’t seem to get blisters or stinky feet. I don’t do trainer liners or short socks, and I dislike the numbing feel of socks, so most of the time, I wear none at all.

MNLurker1345 · Yesterday 21:54

@Starlightexpresss, it is about quality of life for me also. We are all getting older. We will all live that little bit longer due to medication and healthcare but the incidences you have depicted are explicit examples of no quality of life.
