What is something you do even though you know it isn’t good for you?

Sunbathing/not avoiding the sun. I’ve been an outdoors/beach person my whole life. I love nothing more than a hot sunny day outside, swimming, hiking, day at the beach. I don’t want to cover up and hide away from the sun. I don’t want a big hat and sitting in the shade.

I know I have and will continue to age quicker. I know the risk of skin cancer is higher. But on this one I don’t care, the quality of my life is more important to me.

So what are yours?

It's amazing how different we can be. The smell of smoke from someone smoking,or worse out walking & suddenly smelling weed makes me positively wretch 🤢

I’m with you on the weed front, absolutely vile stuff!

Bring back pipe smoking I say - use to love the smell of my Grandads.

Buzyizzy217 · 26/04/2026 18:41

Healthy lifestyle, very active, no alcohol after being married to a violent alcoholic for 18 years, recently restarted smoking after 523 days. 🫤

Like you, sunbathing. It’s been beautiful all day and my pastey skins needs some rays. I love closing my eyes and feeling my face getting hot.

Then wear SUNSCREEN. It’s not that hard people. I’ve watched someone die of melanoma. You really don’t want to go through that. Enjoy the sun! But be responsible.

RebeccaRedhat · 26/04/2026 18:47

Chocolate. By the family size bag, every single day!

charactershoes · 26/04/2026 18:52

Scrolling on the internet, especially social media sites which I know are going to make me feel like shit.

nopeandnopeandnope · 26/04/2026 18:56

I definitely drink more than 14u a week and enjoy a cigarette most days , eat cheese ,chocolate and crisps.

Your vitamin D will be at a healthy level!

starrynight009 · 26/04/2026 19:04

Evening snacking. Too much time scrolling on my phone.

I had skin cancer at 35 and lost part of my nose as a result, so I learned that lesson the hard way.

HRTQueen · 26/04/2026 19:04

having the odd sunbed

eating too much processed food

too much time on my phone

Katemax82 · 26/04/2026 19:09

Cheap energy drink. Literally poison

Learnergranny · 26/04/2026 19:12

I join you in sunbathing, I love it !

Blossoms217 · 26/04/2026 19:13

Pepsi max, hot chocolates

hobbledyhoy · 26/04/2026 19:17

God I loved smoking. I’ve thought to myself that if I manage 80 then I’ll take up the fags and drinking copious bottles of red wine again because by then why not?

Nerdynerdynerd · 26/04/2026 19:17

Chocolate
Bacon
Scrolling
No exercise that would break a sweat
Coffee
Takeaways
Not flossing daily

Things I'm saintly with... 😇
Don't drink alcohol ever
Don't smoke or vape
Factor 50 everyday on face
That's about it lol

DiamondCity · 26/04/2026 19:22

Vape
Drink far too many fizzy drinks, sugar free but that’s probably just as bad as the sugar laden versions
Terrible diet, not enough veg, don’t eat any fruit and too many carbs. Some days I just snack all day rather than eat a proper meal. Had many issues with food as a child, ARFID wasn’t a known thing back then but I reckon I would have been diagnosed had it been. I’m just pleased I’m not as bad as I was when I was a child.
Spend far too much of my free time lounging about rather than doing things like exercise (I do have a physical job which offsets this a bit).

I drink alcohol about 3 times a year though, and I’m not a lover of sunbathing, so there’s that.

babasaclover · 26/04/2026 19:23

Offherrockingchair · 25/04/2026 18:32

Eating sugar.

Can you explain with some evidence why that is bad please? I don’t have a sweet tooth but I know plenty who do

Bikergran · 26/04/2026 19:24

Desserts.

Tryonemoretime · 26/04/2026 19:25

I absolutely love a glass of wine or Sherry every day as I'm cooking dinner and can't be trusted around chocolate. Had to stop buying Quality Street as I'd scoff the lot in a few days.

Delatron · 26/04/2026 19:27

I do love lying in the sun. It boosts vitamin D and does all sorts of other good things (like lowers blood pressure). I think we just need to be sensible. Artificial light all day is worse for us. Just don’t burn.

I refuse to believe something natural is that bad for us if we’re sensible and behave like we used to rather than slather sunscreen all over us and lie in the sun for hours.. I do wear factor 50 on my face and if I can’t avoid being out for hours will put suncream on.

Would like to drink less wine (has a few glasses and couple of night a week).

I eat healthily, exercise and have low stress so hope that offsets it somewhat.

I also firmly believe that socialising has a huge impact on longevity so will only drink those glasses out with friends and not home alone. Again, hope it’s offset a little bit.

It truly is all about balance.

Delatron · 26/04/2026 19:28

A few cups of coffee a day (I think up to 3/4) have shown to have positive health benefits so coffee is not bad for us unless consumed excessively.

changedusernameforthis1 · 26/04/2026 19:29

Boredom eating. I know that if I just find something to do, call a friend, go for a walk etc I'll be able to distract myself but it's much easier to go to the kitchen instead.

Not buying any snacks makes the problem worse - I'll end up getting a takeaway ordered.

I also don't wear my glasses all the time. I should, because my eyesight is terrible, but I only wear them when I'm out in public or watching TV.

5128gap · 26/04/2026 19:30

Same as you OP. I'm healthy in every other way. I'm also concerned about the aging effects. Every year I survey my slightly crepey body and vow that I'm going to avoid sitting in the sun. Yet somehow it calls me like a siren and before I know it there i am, cardi off, shorts on, face tilted upwards, basking like a happy cat.

HettyMeg · 26/04/2026 19:30

Snacks when I "flop" after bedtime

bunnyvsmonkey · 26/04/2026 19:31

Adding extra mature cheddar to anything I can get away with.
