What is something you do even though you know it isn’t good for you?

Sunbathing/not avoiding the sun. I’ve been an outdoors/beach person my whole life. I love nothing more than a hot sunny day outside, swimming, hiking, day at the beach. I don’t want to cover up and hide away from the sun. I don’t want a big hat and sitting in the shade.

I know I have and will continue to age quicker. I know the risk of skin cancer is higher. But on this one I don’t care, the quality of my life is more important to me.

So what are yours?

I've given everything else up but the botox!

Yup- I worked for the NHS for a long time and did one of my placements on a respiratory ward. It was terrifying. All smokers, all had severe COPD.

Some of them could barely walk a few steps without gasping for breath and turning a lovely tinge of blue. The feeling of not being able to get a breath in is horrific. There were also people who got agonisingly painful ulcers that never healed on their toes and fingers (buerger's disease) and then had to start having them amputated. This was due to nicotine constantly inflaming the blood vessels in their extremities causing gangrene and eventually amputations.

It's not just about dying, it's about quality of life too and I dont know why people never acknowledge that.

Absolutely agree.

As someone who has experienced very close relatives with smoking related diseases, dying of lung cancer over six months is the least of your worries.

Living with the high end of moderate COPD is what you need to be afraid of. Supplemental oxygen at home. Stuck indoors majority of the time, gasping for air when you walk as far as the toilet. The panic, the sadness, the furious self-blame for doing something to yourself that's so easily avoidable, but too late now. Every winter, numerous infections and visits to the GP or hospital stays. And you can live like that for decades, it's fucking miserable.

Social media. Having this compulsion to take photos of my (often mundane) day and post them on FB. Nobody else bothers there any more, it's all clickbait and sponsored posts! And MN is social media too, and I'm here far too much. I should be doing real things.

Responding to rage bait and arguing with people I don't know online.

Giving in to the lethargy and apathy, rather than forcing myself to get things done or go out and get some exercise.

I mean, yes I eat bad snacks but only moderately. I'm not someone who says 'I can't have chocolate in the house, I'll just eat the whole thing'. Processed carbs are also bad for me but I think the real toxin is being online.

Overeat. I'm an emotional eater, nights are my nightmares.

Eat too much.

Owning cats.

I had cats growing up and adopted a trio of kittens as an adult. Then suddenly became allergic to cats (and a massive list of other things) in my mid twenties after having them for a few years and becoming very bonded to them.

I decided to keep them and just cope with the symptoms and accept that they'll be my last cats. One died of a brain tumour at 11 and the other two are 13 now.

Two extra strength anti histamine a day help keep the worst of the itching away but I know my asthma would be better controlled without them. But I love them too much.

Wine!

I work out, eat healthily, don't smoke, stay hydrated, take my vitamins, all the other shit

But I bloody love wine and won't stop at a thimble full

Tulipsanddandelions · Today 00:51

What I know isn’t good:

Vaping - hate it but also love it
Full fat real Coca Cola cold from the fridge
Using my phone as much as I do
working nights (good money)

Diet Coke is awful!!!

If it's not a secret - do you work over phone or you are just at work, using your phone in the night?

Snacking on unhealthy food. I eat really healthy meals cooked from scratch and enjoy healthy meals but I also love crisps, cake and nuts! 😅

Nuts aren’t unhealthy-unless they’re salted.

I think the full sugar version of Coke has got to be better for you than artificially sweetened versions surely ?
I very rarely have fizzy drinks , but I’d prefer to have a very occasional full sugar version.
The artificially sweetened versions are just as bad for your teeth as the regular version anyway .

Salted?! Ha! I go full unhealthy with the nuts and always opt for the Honey roasted ones! 😅😅

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · Today 10:23

I'm better off thinking of what I do that is healthy....

Oh, I stopped smoking 9 months ago.
I don't sunbathe.
I don't drink alcohol.

Other than that, my diet stinks, my sleep habits suck and I hate the taste of water. I don't exercise and forget to take my medicine more often than I remember.

BauhausOfEliott · Today 10:52

I drink alcohol, happily eat food that I know is unhealthy, and get by on about four hours' sleep a night.

Keepthecat · Today 10:54

Looking at Mumsnet. Some of the comments made here ( and now possibly to me) are pure poison. But it has a ghastly attraction ...

You can just wear sunblock, you know. Why go wrinkly before you have to?

Me? Isolating myself. As bad as smoking, apparently.

not isolating myself when i have had enough of peopling is VERY bad for everyone else.

mambojambodothetango · Today 13:20

Alcohol, specifically wine. I don't binge but I do find a day without one glass is hard (I try to have 2 consecutive dry days but end up often with only 1). I couldn't give up butter. No way. Luckily my cholesterol is quite low.

mambojambodothetango · Today 13:23

Thought of another. I pick at the excema in my ears. It's do satisfying getting a nice flake of skin off. But then my ears get sore. So stupid.

cambiodenombre123 · Today 13:27

Those accursed spicy Buldak noodles. They're so bloody addictive but make me feel like crap and given me digestive issues. Have reduced them loads but still have the odd one. That feels like a win. Trying to eradicate them from my diet. Doesn't help that they're everybloodywhere...

idrinkandiknowthings · Today 13:39

Red wine
No exercise
Butter
Cheese
White bread
Crap TV
Not drinking enough water

Literally no hope for me. My only saving grace is that I don't smoke or take illegal drugs!

Same here. I definitely need to eat more.

Like OP I adore the sun, I have lots of moles and it’s very silly of me. A friend has just had stage 3 melanoma. I do wear factor 50 though and the number of days in northern England we can actually sit in the sun is very limited.

Wine. I love a glass of wine while cooking (or as above in the evening sun), just one glass but several times a week. Less than a bottle in total so not likely over the 14 units.

Strong tea, terrible for my teeth but I’d rather pay for whitening than give up my Yorkshire Gold tea bags 😂

Pastries! I primarily work from home, it’s chaos on a school morning but a strong cup of tea and a pastry is my guilty pleasure when everyone is finally out the house and I sit down at my laptop.
