Would you spend £240 on a North Face coat for a 13-year-old?

North face coat, 240quid. Would you spend it on your dd13?

Dd has had a couple but only vastly reduced in sale or outlet.

kiki847 · 21/03/2026 21:04

We have the same income as you (I know because Im always interested in your detailed budget breakdowns on finance threads, I’m not stalking you I promise!) and no I wouldn’t unless I literally couldn’t find it anywhere else cheaper, chances are it would be on Vinted, and I know I could convince mine that if I paid £100 for it on Vinted second hand, they could have £140 for something else, and they’d be all for it!

notacooldad · 21/03/2026 21:05

I wouldn't spend it if it was just for gorpcore.

However if he is using it as it was made for then yes.

I spent the equivalent 13 years ago and joked I was having it when he was finished with it.
He did a handing over of the coat 3 months saying the time has come for the mother to reclaim the coat! He is 25 now!

I was happy to spend that much because he was and still is into outdoor activities such as hill walking, mountaineering and climbing ( and anything else he can fit in his week)
The coat is still in good nick and keeps me warm when I take my three dogs out!

Immediate thought is no way, but if they desperately wanted them or it was going to be useful for something …then probably but I’d try Vinted first
You have to be careful with Vinted. There's an awful lot of fakes.

@kiki847 ah thank you. The whole vinted thing just doesn’t do it for me, we are based in Ireland and I know it is over here now but I just don’t trust or want the hassle of buying 2nd hand. I haven’t got the time or patience for it all. 😅

Could you find one on Vinted? A seond hand one that she is also going to grow out of?

Jellycatspyjamas · 21/03/2026 21:08

Statsquestion1 · 21/03/2026 20:56

But then technically it is you paying for it as you are giving the allowance yes?

Technically yes, but they get an allowance every month to spend on whatever they need or want. My DD uses hers for eating with friends, buying a new top or make up. If she decided that a £240 jacket was important enough to her that she would forgo her outings with friends and make up then that’s fine, but I wont be topping up her money. It’s about priorities. Buying an expensive coat isn’t a priority for me, but it may be for my DD so she can choose to spend her discretionary money on it.

sorryIdidntmeanto · 21/03/2026 21:10

Not in a million years.

Nevermind17 · 21/03/2026 21:11

I wouldn’t. All the kids who wear North Face round here are also sporting balaclavas and riding BMXs.

I honestly don’t know I’ve never used vinted but it all just seems like a huge headache,
so many things to go wrong etc!

I would

kiki847 · 21/03/2026 21:13

@Statsquestion1 ha I do know what you mean! I can’t bring myself to sell on there, too much of a ball ache, but I’ve got some pretty decent bargains on there, I tend to go for bundles of Nike t shirts and the like. But have to admit I haven’t risked it for a bigger purchase like a birthday gift. I’d probably attempt a NF outlet if you’ve got one near you, but appreciate it tends to be bright green or blue versions!

user2848502016 · 21/03/2026 21:14

No

Rituelec · 21/03/2026 21:14

No

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 21/03/2026 21:14

I have, DD loves hers. We got adult DS one for his birthday this year too.

Denim4ever · 21/03/2026 21:15

So durability wise they last quite well. DS is in uni and I've had a long North Face puffer coat since he was in reception. I would say though that this coat is great for cold sharp or snowy days but no good for rain.

However, when DS was about 14-16 he often asked me to get rid of my 'private school wannabe chav style' coat. It's certainly true that the short North Face puffer coat wearers hereabouts are from private schools and sport Princess Andre style accents in a manner that's clearly fake.

Buy it if you like, but fashion can be fickle

NormasArse · 21/03/2026 21:15

Statsquestion1 · 21/03/2026 20:10

Yes this exactly the situation, it’s her birthday and she wants for nothing to be honest…but she needs a new coat and she loves them, of course she does as “everyone” has one. So I got her one and my dm thinks I’m nuts 😂 I thought it was ok as a once off tbf. She is very deserving and treats everything with care.

You’ll be able to sell it when she grows out of it then, to fund the next coat.

Times are changing- it’s no longer a waste of money to buy something of quality- it’s really easy to sell it on.

Chatsbots · 21/03/2026 21:15

There's an auction house by me that does a Proceeds of Crime sale reasonably often. Always amazed by the number of nice jackets that come up for sale there.

I'm working up to a nice insulated jacket for my "hobby" but blimey, they are not cheap.

RollOnSunshine · 21/03/2026 21:16

Does it come with a free asbo?

cottingleyfairy · 21/03/2026 21:16

Yes I would.
I think I’ve been the same height, shoe size and dress size since I was that age? So it will last her and she sounds deserving.

thesnowleopard · 21/03/2026 21:17

Most of the North Face coats the YP are wearing are copies - I can't tell the difference!

drspouse · 21/03/2026 21:18

I spent £120 on a Didriksons coat for DD who is 11. We live in the NW and she leaves the house at 7.25 for the bus.
I have labelled the coat itself in two places with Sharpie and stuck labels on the detachable hood and the detachable fur. Also it has a tracker in it. It's the most expensive coat any of us have (though now I want one).

Favouritefruits · 21/03/2026 21:18

No way! No north face coat is worth £240 that’s purely paying for the name!

mcmooberry · 21/03/2026 21:18

Never.

Statsquestion1 · 21/03/2026 21:19

RollOnSunshine · 21/03/2026 21:16

no this one comes with a sporty 13yr old girl who studies hard with results in 80-90% bracket for all subjects though.
