Would you spend £240 on a North Face coat for a 13-year-old?

North face coat, 240quid. Would you spend it on your dd13?

It depends. I bought myself a North Face arctic parker 14 years ago. Ive worn in most winters and it honestly looks as good as new. It cost me 220 pounds back then. I think I could probably get £100 for it now on Vinted if I wanted to. So if you think she will care for it and wear it for several years then yes. And then I would sell it if she no longer wants it.

Tulipvase · 21/03/2026 21:20

If I could afford it, possibly. I wouldn’t be spending that money on NF though.

notacooldad · 21/03/2026 21:20

I wouldn’t. All the kids who wear North Face round here are also sporting balaclavas and riding BMXs.

thats interesting, no balaclavas round where I live.
No teens on electric bikes, wearing TNF and never seeing a mountain?

Has she stopped growing do you think? I’d be more inclined to if so. But if you’re in the northern hemisphere, it’s not really the time of year to get one?

madamegazelle1 · 21/03/2026 21:21

No!

minipie · 21/03/2026 21:22

No because

  1. she’d lose it
  2. she might get mugged for it - has happened round here
  3. an older girl at her school put her off by saying “only the try-hards wear North Face”

No they see mountains every day here tbh, and the sea, coastal town where most teens spend the year surfing, Supping and kayaking too.

yABU. But the time your DD is 14, she might have moved onto the next fashion.

I was joking.
A lot of teen Tnf wearers fit a stereotype in many areas!

PropitiousJump · 21/03/2026 21:25

I wouldn't want it if it was free! I suppose they do the job, but they're everywhere, they're unexciting. I like a coat with some character.

Yeah I reckon she could have one more growth spurt but given that it also fits me (at age 40 and size 10 I think it will be ok. We are in Ireland where summer is for about 2 weeks a year 😂

Depends.if she deserves it, would.look after it, needs it....

No-one needs a coat costing £240.

I do Grin

frecklejuice · 21/03/2026 21:25

Yes and I have done for my son, it lasted forever then we handed it down to my nephew. If you can afford it then why not get them what they want?

Calcine · 21/03/2026 21:25

I'd probably get one off Vinted or new but on a discount website if possible. But if it had to be new and couldn't be found cheaper, and was important to DD, I'd just buy it. We're fortunate that it would be affordable to us and we'd hopefully get DD2 to wear it once outgrown, so cost per wear would be reasonable. I wouldn't refuse just on principle - I never had any branded items as a kid and I think it's important
sometimes just to have the things you need to fit in.
Once DD is about 15, I'd be able to wear/share her coats too so even better!

Realistically she's not going to wear the coat for a few years it's probably unlikely to be worn much at all with warmer weather heading into spring/summer. How annoyed are you going to be when it's sitting unworn and she outgrows it.

Believe me, they wear them all year round... most people are in vest tops and shorts in summer - these kids are in North Face puffers in winter/spring/summer 🤷‍♀️

Only police officers wear north face,so you dont know they are police officers!

Happyhappyday · 21/03/2026 21:30

I am not opposed to spending money on good outdoor gear (I have been buying my now 7yo Patagonia a waterproof + snow suit + down jackets every year since she was born) but I probably would refuse to buy TNF on principle. I work in the industry and their gear is about 20% more expensive than comparable from others - if you look at fabric types (nylon versus polyester), down fill power, waterproofing type and with a microscope, fabric quality, their gear isn’t good compared to Mountain Hardwear, Arcteryx, Patagonia, outdoor research etc. Similar quality to Berghaus but about 20% more expensive.

no this one comes with a sporty 13yr old girl who studies hard with results in 80-90% bracket for all subjects though.

hi @Statsquestion1 - my DD was similar at 13. Good grades bright and sporty and North Face women's Nuptses were all the rage and she really one! I didn't buy her one until she was 16 but I wish I had as she has got so much wear out of it and I could have got it her earlier x

TheBlueKoala · 21/03/2026 20:08

I spent 30 for my DS north west coat on vinted. It was pristine and he had no idea it wasn't "new". Would never spend 240 £ on a coat unless it was a birthday/christmas gift and they wanted nothing else.

He didnt notice it had north west on it and not north FACE ?

KittyStanton · 21/03/2026 21:31

Haven’t read the whole thread. But yes. My then 13 and 16 year olds had them for last Christmas. Their grandpa gave them £100 towards a coat each & they both chose to buy a North Face on Vinted. I think they both had to put some of their own money in. They both wear them lots, haven’t lost them or had them stolen.

Toastersandkettles · 21/03/2026 21:36

I would. I'm going to sound like a right snowflake, but I remember being the child who had the supermarket brands and it was horrible.

Jobseeker2026 · 21/03/2026 21:41

Have you already bought it? If not, north face send you a 10% off code when you sign up to their website so you could make a new account and save yourself a little. I’ve had my north face coat about 10 years and it’s kept really well, I know someone that had theirs fixed too so they have good service
