Would you spend £240 on a North Face coat for a 13-year-old?

North face coat, 240quid. Would you spend it on your dd13?

No, absolutely not. She'll grow out of it, that's an insane amount of money.

I might get one off Vinted if I could find a bargain, but would be wary of fakes and it would come with a lecture about the pointlessness of designer labels.

Swissmeringue · 21/03/2026 20:12

Depends, if they want it as a gift at a time when I'd usually spend that amount on them anyway, so Christmas or birthday. Then yes, sure.

My oldest is only 7 and I'm (probably falsely) holding out hope that we're teaching her how to prioritise spending on things she genuinely wants and that bring her joy rather than buying things to fit in. But I think it's easy to forget that, at 13, maybe the thing that brings them joy and that they genuinely want is just to fit in......

We got a slightly bigger size to go over her school jumper yes and so she can get a few years out of it.

Realistically she's not going to wear the coat for a few years it's probably unlikely to be worn much at all with warmer weather heading into spring/summer. How annoyed are you going to be when it's sitting unworn and she outgrows it.

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 21/03/2026 20:14

I got a £200 mountain essentials coat for my 13yo DS bday. Got a bigger. He wore it every day of the winter and still now when it’s cold. And probably will next winter too. So money well spent on a decent coat I think. Also, he didn’t really want anything else

edited to add- his friend recently got a £1000 coat! I forget the make- some really expressive one! Now I did think that was excessive!!

Okiedokie123 · 21/03/2026 20:14

No. Regardless of how much money I had to spare. Or how much she "deserved" it. Or wanted it. Or asked for it as a birthday gift.

The answer would still be "No"

I don’t think she’ll grow out of it that fast it’s a women’s M…it fits me and I’m 40 😂

As a follow up to my earlier post… I bought them their NF puffers when they were in Ys 9/10. They were birthday presents, not just random. They still wear them now age 20 and 22 so they’ve had a good few years of them. Despite the insane price, they’ve lasted well and are still seem to be ‘a trend’ 7 years later!

We live in Ireland it’s cold here most of the year and it’s a women’s size m which fits me at age 40 so I think it’ll be fine tbh. I’ll wear if she does grow out of it 😅

Oh this is great news! Love it!

And here I am wanting a similar coat for myself I know I'd wear for a decade and is good quality but can't justify the cost. I just couldn't if it were going to to grown out of in a year or two.

mcmuffin22 · 21/03/2026 20:18

No. They would lose it within 3 weeks guaranteed.

Topsy44 · 21/03/2026 20:21

No but that’s because my 13 year old DD would lose it!

Now if we were talking about my DS I would agree but DD is great for not losing things etc.

I know they’re also a fashion thing but I’d be fine to spend money on a decent quality warm coat from a proper outdoorsy brand. So I wouldn’t have an issue with that at all.

Comefromaway · 21/03/2026 20:24

If you can afford it & it is going to last years then buy it, don’t feel you have to justify it. If you can’t afford it or it would compromise the family finances in any way that’s a different matter.

my Max Mara coat cost a lot and there is no way I could have afforded it when I was younger but I’ll have it for life.

dh has a Moncler. I’m not totally convinced it’s worth the price but he loves it. north Face is reasonable by comparison.

saying that I’d never have bought Ds one as he’s lost more coats than he’s had hot dinners.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 21/03/2026 20:24

No. They’d be lucky if spent £24 on a coat.

Silverbirchleaf · 21/03/2026 20:24

For a birthday, yes.

For an everyday, non special coat, no.

It’s a women’s size M (which also fits me) so I’m optimistic that it will last at least 3 years.

No. That’s the kind of thing my kids would save up for from their allowance. I’d give them what I’d usually spend on a good winter coat and they would make up the difference.

RememberBeKindWithKaren · 21/03/2026 20:52

No

But then technically it is you paying for it as you are giving the allowance yes?

I would as long as they are sensible and unlikely to lose it

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 21/03/2026 20:58

Immediate thought is no way, but if they desperately wanted them or it was going to be useful for something …then probably but I’d try Vinted first

musicinspring1 · 21/03/2026 21:01

I have for a birthday , it’s had daily use (apart from summer!) for 2 years and still looks new so could be sold on Vinted in future. Cost per wear has been worth it and I’ve never had to nag to wear a coat when it’s cold …
Child is responsible and looks after things, I wouldn’t necessarily do the same for my other DC who leaves things on buses and uses coats as goal posts …
