North face coat, 240quid. Would you spend it on your dd13?

No, I wouldn’t. If they really wanted it for their birthday, I would say that I would put £100-150 toward it, and when their grandparents ask what they would like (which they always do—one set has a £75 budget and the other set £100), I would advise DC that they could ask for money toward their dream coat.

My Dds got a lot taller between 13 and 15.

So I’d worry a bit about it being outgrown. Or lost or stolen - my kids have lost coats at school more than once.

I don’t consider them particularly good quality either, if they had a lifetime guarantee I might consider it more.

I’d probably try to get one second hand instead.

If they were a bit older, less likely to leave it on the back of a chair or screw it up in a bag, and had definitely stopped growing, then I might get it as a birthday present.

Why is ‘need’ even coming into the equation though? It’s a birthday gift. I tend to buy my children things they want for their birthday, not things they need. I know that people who are struggling financially may buy needs rather than wants for special occasions, but the OP doesn’t appear to be in this situation. So whether she needs it or not seems to be pretty irrelevant.

Yes sure.

I haven’t really commented on the OP for that very reason. Does she want to buy the coat for DD and can she afford it.

My reply was to PP. Many people do need to spend that much on coats. I do for work as I work outside. North face actually gone down in quality in recent years so not my go to anymore without some very thorough in store inspections. But I wouldn’t blink at spending that amount. I want… no I NEED to be warm and dry. That is the starting price for technical wear.
