Would you spend £240 on a North Face coat for a 13-year-old?

North face coat, 240quid. Would you spend it on your dd13?

OP posts:
freebiefiend · 23/03/2026 16:54

It depends. If you can afford it and she can meet expectations (eg: take care of it, be grateful and responsible) then yes. This means a lot to her and will make her feel good and heard. But overall you can also save money even on this purchase, i would recommend using cashback apps. i bought my niece a spenny dress but got cashback on tuck. and used an asos discount too so it didn't kill me haha. the joy on her face >>

LifeOfDog · 23/03/2026 16:56

I would, although my children aren’t into North Face. I have spent more than this on other coats and things for my children. It’s not a huge amount of money to me and my children have always looked after things well.

Doteycat · 22/03/2026 00:05

But many dont consider 250quid over spending.
Might be an hours pay to some. Thats not overspending.
Your benchmark is not mine.

I suppose you're right, but it's a pity to imagine there are people, no matter how rich, who essentially throw away L250 after an item that will be discarded in a few months.

It definitely will not be discarded after a few months

You're aware that children grow, right?

She is 13 and I have stated that the coat is a women’s size medium, so it will fit over jumpers etc…it fits me perfectly and I’m 40 and a size 10. She’s not going to grow that much.

No my 13 year old would lise. It.

StasisMom · 23/03/2026 22:04

Statsquestion1 · 21/03/2026 21:25

Yeah I reckon she could have one more growth spurt but given that it also fits me (at age 40 and size 10 I think it will be ok. We are in Ireland where summer is for about 2 weeks a year 😂

Oh well tbh, if you could wear it too, then I’d say definitely yes! I would look on Vinted though for a bargain if you can.

They also stop growing at some point.. a lot of 13 year old girls haven’t got a huge amount of growing left to do. My 12 year old is the same height as me, and I don’t think she’s going to grow hugely taller. She’s in an adult size S at the moment so I reckon an adult size M would last her a fair few years.

I found it was more useful to me when they got to this age because if anything did get grown out of, I could have it!

Bluegreenbird · 24/03/2026 05:03

When my son was 14 he wanted a NF coat for school. Bought a size medium. Plain black. I think it was £160 ten years ago. He wore it for five years to school then gave it to his girlfriend - it still looks good. She wears it all the time. Cost per wear it was a bargain.
Not sure girls will be so easily happy to wear the same thing for years but it worked fine for me.

(He now buys random non brand stuff from Vinted and has no interest in brands but it felt important to him when he was 14).

FairKoala · 24/03/2026 05:13

Absolutely not.

We are heading into summer so what wear would they get out of it and by next winter it probably wouldn’t fit.

If you buy bigger then you have an oversized coat that could still not fit. You don’t know the size they will be and when

No idea where you are based but I am not even wearing my usual hoodie atm as it is too warm

Mummyoflittledragon · 24/03/2026 05:42

For everyone saying your dd will grow out of it, at 13 and it being a size M, that sounds unlikely. My dd definitely didn’t. I hope she really gets a lot of enjoyment out of the coat.

How much is the average 13 year old girl growing in 8 months?! Most of the year 8 girls in my daughter’s school are around the same height as me or taller (I’m 5ft5) so can’t see them all growing more than an inch or 2!

I’m based in coastal Ireland…it’s cold most of the year

I bought ds a £300 north face coat, I can afford it so I bought him what he wanted. It was slightly big when we bought it and he still wears it 3 years later. It gets worn for a few months of the year so it still looks good, and where we are is cold so he’s still wearing it now in mid March.
Your dd is 13, she unlikely to grow so much from now on that a women’s medium coat won’t fit her, she’s not 5. And if she does then you wear it.

I’m in the Midlands and according to my weather app it’s currently 8 degrees and feels like 4 degrees, so my pre teens definitely wore coats to stand at the bus stop to get to school this morning!

But its not being discarded.
My dd has her for 5 years and has no intention of getting rid of it. It sits in her wardrobe with all her other coats and she wears it when she sees fit.
Your logiv is flawed. You dont get to decide the benchmark for what you consider throwing away money.
I think 2000 on a dress for a special occassion is fine.
Others think 12k is fine.
Some think 120 euro is waste.

But what happens when she outgrows it

Clothes my dd wore at 13 would not fit her at 14.
They might have gone on but arms and length of clothes would not be something that would be ok.

The cuffs of her coats were nearer her elbows than her wrists

So saying a coat will last 5 years isn’t exactly true at the age of 13

Definitely get the coat if they are 17/18 but not 13

It’s not a when. It’s more of an if. My dd wouldn’t have grown out of it because she’d stopped growing by 13. I was the same.

Depends.if she deserves it, would.look after it, needs it....

No-one needs a coat costing £240.

Well many do yes but a 13yo probably doesn’t.

Why is ‘need’ even coming into the equation though? It’s a birthday gift. I tend to buy my children things they want for their birthday, not things they need. I know that people who are struggling financially may buy needs rather than wants for special occasions, but the OP doesn’t appear to be in this situation. So whether she needs it or not seems to be pretty irrelevant.

My dd has clothes that still fit her since she was 14. Shes the same shoe size since she was 13.
I buy good quality shoes and coats for them since they were born. I dont consider them a waste of money and never have.
Especially if its a gift and something they really really want and will look after.

My nearly 13 year old is 5ft4, I’m 5ft5. Realistically I can’t see her growing more than another couple of inches (she’d be a huge outlier in terms of females in our family if she did). I can’t see that an inch or 2 on the length of a puffer coat would make a huge difference, so I’d happily buy a medium adult size and assume it was going to fit her long term.

Good point about shoes size. My dd has had the same size since year 6. She’s year 13 now.
