Susan Cadogan – Hurt So Good Lyrics | Genius Lyrics https://share.google/fXhmd5KSrhfJUNtnp

I just heard it and looked up the lyrics. Appalling.

You are not wrong, but the fact the Bee Gees wrote it does always make me feel a bit ick!

Why? The Bee Gees wrote some banging love songs, Chain Reaction being one of the best and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the lyrics and no hidden meaning

She's not singing it from a point of empowerment. She's saying she enjoys being abused.

A lot of women in dysfunctional and toxic relationships feel that way though. Sometimes because they’ve had such shit childhoods they think that shouting, control, anger, mind games, slamming things, etc IS love, and one if the ways some women process their experience or speak about it, is through the songs they write and sing along to. It’s where they find understanding from others. I don’t think it should have been banned and I actually find it refreshing when people can express honestly the type of “love” they’ve had.

Humans are different, some have had more fucked up cycles than others and I like when music reflects that, it can open your mind to other perspectives.

With apologies to any Bee Gees fanatics out there, but they always give me a bit of the ick. Maybe it was all the high unnaturally falsetto's!

I think it’s supposed to be a sex kink not domestic abuse.

Beneath your perfume and your make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
And though you know
That it's wrong to be
Alone with me
That 'come on' look is in your eyes

Yes, a 'good message' there...

He's not saying her is going to!

He's saying (as I've said above) that she has pretended she's older 'old enough' and now he's realised she's not, that she needs to 'get out of his mind''run' 'go home to her mama'.

Literally the theme of the song is she's too young for him to be with and he's now realised or learned her age.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 02/03/2026 20:39

Also Bee Gees - “nobody stops this body from taking you”. Barry, have a word with yourself man.

I still like Massachusetts better than any of their later stuff. Though Stayin' Alive is a real toe-tapper.

Simon mayo used to do a really good bee gees impersonation.

They're all dead now aren't they, bless them? I love the way their voices blended together. Some people sound magic in combination.

RaraRachael · 02/03/2026 20:43

Barry Gibb is still alive

It's more of a metaphorical battle, like in chess, where you take your opponent. He's not suggesting he's going to beat her up or rape her

Noooo, Barry is still with us.

The theme of the song is quite evidently 'if you don't leave I can't control my base urges and you are getting raped'.
It is the second worst lyric ever written, after 'Imagine'. By another writer needing his hard-drive checked.

I don't imagine (pun intended) John Lennon had a hard drive in 1980???

lljkk · 02/03/2026 20:59

Why wouldn't we ban Jolene first?
Honestly, what is wrong with the singer thinking only one man could ever make her happy : She should thank Jolene for prising his sorry ungrateful arse out of her life, Good Riddance.

Not being serious, I like Jolene, I don't want to ban it, But the singer is being a little pathetic. Not a great role model at all. Just lke most of us are most of the time. That's what art is like. Shows many imperfect things.

If you listen to the lyrics of Young Girl hes telling her that she is too young and she needs to go home. Hes doing the gentlemanly thing.
Same with Abba's "does your mother know"
One of the very rare numbers sung by kne of the guys

Get out of here, before I have the time to change my mind, cause I’m afraid we’ll go too far

He’s not quite sure he’s going to restrain himself is he.. yes she had better run before he finds that he can’t control his urges against an underage girl.

HelenaWilson · 02/03/2026 21:28

Where do you get the idea it wouldn't have been consensual?

She had pretended to be old enough
She was coming on to him
That come on look is in your eyes

That's alright then. Poor guy just couldn't help it. It's all Lolita's fault not Gary's.

Thanks for flagging this song up for me though @HelloDenise (The Susan Cadogan one!) I've played it 7 times tonight. Plus a bunch of the other 'awful' songs mentioned on this thread by a few posters that should be banned.

A lot of grips needs to be handed out on this thread.

Honestly, there are some MNers who would only approve of songs if the lyrics were:

You treat me right
And respectfully
And if you stopped treating me so well
Then I would leave
Ooh ooh baby

He calls you baby? How infantilising. LTB.

my sharona and him getting it up for the touch of the younger kind.

lots of songs are really dodgy

Another oft trotted out song on the song lyric pearl clutching threads.

Younger doesn't mean child, does it?
If he's 24 and Sharona's 19, she's younger.

Just looked it up. They were in a relationship and engaged for a while, and remained lifelong friends after breaking up. She was even with him when he died.

If Sharona has no problem with him and his song, there's no reason for anyone else to!

Those lyrics are pretty tame tbh

So you support the message then?
