Susan Cadogan – Hurt So Good Lyrics | Genius Lyrics https://share.google/fXhmd5KSrhfJUNtnp

I just heard it and looked up the lyrics. Appalling.

I don't think this should have been banned, but I heard this gem on the radio this morning and never realised it's a classic example of DARVO. I'd have sung along with it as a 10 year old without thinking.

The rumour's true, you know that there've been others
What can I do, I tell you baby they don't mean a thing
Now girl don't go and throw our love away

Cheeky chuffer blaming the woman. Change! LTB!

Oh come off it. Absolutely nothing to be remotely offended by

What's wrong with that one? It sounds like the woman is toxic for the singer - and it's possibly mutual - so they're going to break up. Is that not a good thing... or have I missed something?

I love Hurt So Good, it's a brilliant tune, and I don't think it specifically refers to physical abuse (First you take my heart in the palm of your hand and you squeeze it tight, Then you take my mind and play with it all night....etc) - she is definitely in thrall to this man !
I haven't read the full thread but Susan Cadogan is a Jamaican singer (now 74) and HSG was released in the wave of lover's rock reggae that arrived in the '70's. I lived in Brixton for many many years, and this track was always on the decks in clubs and pubs and when she made an appearance at the Lambeth Country Show (way back in the day, when it was fun) the crowd went absolutely
wild ! It was fantastic 🇯🇲

JaneJeffer · 25/05/2026 15:06

These lyrics are awful 🤢

“I want your money
I've no excuse, I just want you to use me
Take me and abuse me
I got no taboos, I'll make a trade with you
Do anything you want me to
Money talks, mm-hmm, money talks
Dirty cash, I want you, dirty cash, I need you, oh
Money talks, money talks
Dirty cash, I want you, dirty cash, I need you, oh
I once had pride, now that's all behind
I want to get rich quick
I want success and all that goes with it
And I'm gonna use my sex”

JaneJeffer · 25/05/2026 15:12

And this from The Spinners

“When you were so in love with me
I played around like I was free
Thought I could have my cake and eat it, too
But how I cried over losing you
See, I'm down and out
But I ain't about to go living my life without you
Hey, every day, I made you cry
I'm paying, girl, 'til the day I die

Oh, I used to love to make you cry
It made me feel like a man inside
If I had been a man in reality
You would be here, baby, loving me
Now my nights are long and lonely”

Good. I hope you’re lonely for the rest of your life.

has anyone mentioned Cardi B?
or watched the vid for Go Down Deh

or Granny’s favourite,
Ken Dodd and his ‘a peeness, the greatest gift that I(he) possess?

so many dark dirty songs, so many obscured meanings, in plain hearing

OP, the phrase Rock ‘n’ Roll was from ‘the old Rock Roll’ a euphemism for sex,

DarkForces · 25/05/2026 15:43

Eightdayz · 02/03/2026 22:04

So you support the message then?

I don't support the message in Delilah but I still sing a long. If we banned everything we didn't support there'd be a lot less music in the world. I find every step you take seriously creepy but I don't want it banned!

Personally I quite like dark songs. Songs don't have to be all sweetness & light

It's supposed to be creepy. Sting apparently finds it very weird that couples choose it as their song, as if it's a love song

ourSusie · 25/05/2026 15:55

has anyone mentioned More Than Words, which is allegedly a ‘love song’
rather than being recognised as a blatant attempt at sexual coercion

or David Gray’s ‘The One I Love’ sung from the pov of a soldier dying on the battlefield, hallucinating - a poignant, clever song, but not for a ‘first dance’

Middletoleft · 25/05/2026 16:02

Even Abba missed the mark on occasion (Does your Mamma Know).

The majority of songs are powerful because of the emotions, good or bad, that inspire the lyrics.
Can't see anyone writing cracking tunes about "my woman/man sharing the mental load" rather than"my woman/man doing me wrong".

PS just looked at the Abba song lyrics and they didn't miss the mark. Apologies to all Abba fans.

Fair enough. I'm right to find it creepy. Still don't want it banned because others use it for a first dance.

Of course there is. I'm a cheat, but they don't mean anything, and if this relationship ends it's your fault for having self respect and "throwing it away" - what? A cheating man? That's the message.

There are loads of songs with lyrics that are offensive.

Zov · 02/03/2026 13:43

Errr, I think you need to read the lyrics again. She's talking about what he's doing to her heart and her mind and her pride.

Also, the song is 50 years old, and I can't remember the last time I heard it played or performed.

This. No need for dramas about a song half a century old. 🙄

Oh that's alright then, he's a keeper!

But lots of songs are about misery in relationships, heartbreak, loving someone who doesn't love you the way you want them to love you. Even operatic arias have themes like that.

Yeah but -stop the press- it's ok to sing about these things! Do you really think that all songs should be "I love you, you love me?" Life isn't like that. Songs are one way of expressing emotions, just like poetry, fiction storybooks and films etc. It doesn't mean they're saying that what they sing is to be obeyed or admired. Just like if a film or fictional programme had someone cheating in it. Would you want that banned too?

The theme of the song is quite evidently 'if you don't leave I can't control my base urges and you are getting raped'.

Where do you get the idea it wouldn't have been consensual?

She had pretended to be old enough
She was coming on to him
That come on look is in your eyes

To be fair, "she consented" or "I had no idea she wasn't 16+", etc, is what all pervs/ rapists claim.

One of my DDs was once propositioned by a man who drew his car alongside her when she was walking home from school. We called the police, who got a full description of the incident, the man, and his car. The officer advised DD to say clearly "I'm fourteen" if she was ever approached again. No judge would arraign a suspect if there was a reasonable assumption that the predator was preying on someone 16 or older, apparently. If the man persisted after being told his target was under 16, then the prosecutor had a case.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 25/05/2026 16:51

Don't listen to Delilah OP. You might end up shaking and crying.

Songs are an art form. They are not auto biographical. Like books. Apparently Andy Weir never actually left the solar system, and Hilary Mantel never even met the Tudors!

HelenaWilson · 25/05/2026 17:07

To be fair, "she consented" or "I had no idea she wasn't 16+", etc, is what all pervs/ rapists claim.

But the whole point of the song is that he is not a perv or a rapist, because when he realises she is under age, he tells her to go home to her mother.

The song is by a US writer and singer and the age of consent in some US states is 18. So the song could be about a 16 yo, which would be fine in the UK. And the young man in the song could be 18-19.

Frankie by Sister Sledge - No 1 for weeks! Does anyone remember the video with Frankie as a rather rotund cop that they all lust over? 🤣🤣🤣

"You were fifteen
I was twelve
It was summer
We were so in love
I never loved anyone this much
Look at me
I'm thrilled to your touch..."
