Susan Cadogan – Hurt So Good Lyrics | Genius Lyrics https://share.google/fXhmd5KSrhfJUNtnp

I just heard it and looked up the lyrics. Appalling.

I miss the misery by halestorm always gets me.
I miss the phone calls, the way you hate me, I miss the screaming, the way that you blame me, I miss the rough sex that leaves me a mess, I miss the feelings, the pain in my chest. I like the kick in the face, I love the way that it hurts, I don't miss you I miss the misery

I don't imagine (pun intended) John Lennon had a hard drive in 1980???

Hard drives existed in 1980...
And his had the lyrics to 'Imagine' on it.
Without that there is no Noel Gallagher.
If only a confused American time traveller with a gun had got there in time.

It's far worse than Relax that was banned 10 years later.

Relax was only banned by the BBC for a short while and that ban was driven by homophobia. It was only 17 years after the partial decriminalisation of gay sex and four years before Section 28.

The BBC were crap on moral outrage banned relax but Ebeneezer Goode by the Shamen got through and was played when the BBC was doing an anti drug campaign .
Years earlier they missed Here comes the nice by the Small faces.

He's always got what I need when I want some speed.

OK I'll bite. Leaving aside that the song came out in 1971, way before the era of personal home computers, what is wrong with the lyrics?

Eightdayz · 02/03/2026 22:04

So you support the message then?

Yes I do. Lots of women feel like that. She's not singing "ladies, if your man cheats it's ok if he's a great lover!" She's just singing it from her pov. I don't think many people read too much in to those lyrics. It's just a good pop song

Rockchick01 · 03/03/2026 08:42

I don’t get how people can get so worked up or offended over song lyrics. No one forces you to listen. With all that’s going on in the world I’d say banning perceived inappropriate songs is way down the list.

Definitely not in 1965 when he wrote this song. I wasn’t alive back then but what the actual fuck??

The Beatles: Run for your Life
Well, I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or I won't know where I am
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand, little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end, little girl
Well, you know that I'm a wicked guy
And I was born with a jealous mind
And I can't spend my whole life
Trying just to make you toe the line
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand, little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end, little girl
Let this be a sermon
I mean everything I've said
Baby, I'm determined
And I'd rather see you dead
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand, little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end, little girl
I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or you won't know where I am
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand, little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end, little girl

Moonmelodies · 03/03/2026 08:55

The "I'd rather see you dead, little girl,
than to be with another man" line is from Arthur Gunter's 1954 blues hit on Excello "Baby Let's Play House".

If we are going to ban songs, can we start with The Police? He may not have been crazy stalker teacher who had an affair with a student, but he certainly thought about it.

Every breath you take
And every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take
I'll be watchin' you
Every single day
And every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay
I'll be watchin' you
Oh, can't you see
You belong to me?
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take

And

Inside her, there's longing
This girl's an open page
Book marking, she's so close now
This girl is half his age
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Her friends are so jealous
You know how bad girls get
Sometimes it's not so easy
To be the teacher's pet

Bopping away at the youth club on a Friday night, the section in Summertime by Mungo Jerry

‘If her Daddy’s rich, take her out for a meal, If her Daddy’s poor, just do what you feel’

gave us (adolescent girls) all pause for thought at the time, grimacing slightly and not singing along to that bit. We could understand the disrespect, with more sinister undertones, meant in that at the time, not just looking back decades through a different lens.

With apologies to any Bee Gees fanatics out there, but they always give me a bit of the ick. Maybe it was all the high unnaturally falsetto's!

Well they did tend to wear very tight trousers 🤣🤣🤣

The song was in the charts 51 years ago. I'm not talking about now.

Like the poster above said. Teenage girls bopping along to this at the youth club absorb the message subconsciously.

I genuinely can't understand why so many of you think this is fine and I can only assume if you were all 50 years older you'd have been happy with your teenage and preteen daughters singing along with it and the other I'll wait for you and be a doormat lyrics around then.

We were more liberal back then (1973) OP. We did not believe in censorship the way you younger people seem to.

The Sex Pistols want a word with you.

And the Kinks.

Also, Donna Summer, Mott the Hoople, Judge Dread, The Stranglers, Elton John, Ian Dury, Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton etc etc.

Let’s not re-write history. The 70s were far from liberal.

Dollymylove · 03/03/2026 09:19

Some posters are reading way too much into these songs. Yes many of the carry a message, some good, some not so good but some PPs seem to be twisting themselves into knots to find offence. Its music!! Get a grip FFs

This one's a banger too Young Girl https://share.google/A9jiLJ5Wn8tmFPi7C 😐, and still gets played

HelloDenise · 02/03/2026 19:37

She's not singing it from a point of empowerment. She's saying she enjoys being abused.

No she isn’t. She’s singing from the perspective of a woman who knows deep down she is in a relationship that is abusive but is trying to kid herself otherwise because she loves him. It’s about the mindset of someone who doesn’t know what a healthy relationship looks like and has mistaken abuse for passion. That’s quite a common situation. The song isn’t condoning it. The character in the song is essentially meant to be that one friend who regularly comes to you in tears because of something her horrible boyfriend has done, but will never leave him.

Totally agree.

drusilla49 · 03/03/2026 10:23

Have you ever listened to any Country music? You’d have to ban an awful lot of songs! Music is art. Lyrics are, or should be, art. It’s about life and love. It’s dirty, messy, uncomfortable, and irrational. It’s not supposed to be a blueprint for the correct way to do things.

MalewhoisLaffinalltheway · 03/03/2026 10:56

Love Thin Lizzy, but the lyrics to Killer on the Loose...! 🤔

Bertiebiscuit · 03/03/2026 11:04

Let's not forget Rolling Stones "under my thumb", and the racism of "Brown sugar" - very few song lyrics from 60s, 70s even 80s are acceptable any more - mostly written and performed by men. Whenever i hear "I'll be watching you" i shudder

RaraRachael · 03/03/2026 11:07

I'm glad I never pay any attention to song lyrics after reading some of these posts!

HelloDenise · 03/03/2026 11:42

I think it's glamorising pain and encouraging women to relinquish agency.

So? There are billions of songs about drugs, crime, sex, abusive relationships, suicide ect. It's just a song. They don't all have to be about happy, go-lucky topics.

There is nothing wrong with sinister/dark lyrics and I applaud Sting & many others for having the guts to write them. Many authors write disturbing stories, doesn't mean just because they write about it they have any intention of carrying it out.

For Sting and other songwriters, he could be writing about personal experience. Maybe he's experienced stalking or unwanted attention?

BiscoffCheesecakes · 03/03/2026 12:35

Also @BoredZeldathe teacher isn't the crazy stalker
