Susan Cadogan – Hurt So Good Lyrics | Genius Lyrics https://share.google/fXhmd5KSrhfJUNtnp

I just heard it and looked up the lyrics. Appalling.

A lot of songs from the 60s/70s can sound quite stalky or misogynistic when judged by today’s standards. It was a different time. Modern day feminism was in its infancy. Girls liked bad boys.

Swing Lo. Slave song. Offensive and yet still the England Rugby song……:

Are you saying women aren’t allowed to sing about abusive situations they’ve been in? Are songs only allowed to be about nice things?

She's not singing it from a point of empowerment. She's saying she enjoys being abused.

I think you’re misunderstanding the song. It’s not about being violent it’s about the intense love and the hardship that comes with a relationship and working through it.

I agree! John Mellencamp had a song called Hurt So Good.

It's not about physical abuse, its about someone making her unhappy.

SwedishEdith · 02/03/2026 19:43

It's a great song though. Same as Under My Thumb. Obviously terrible message but great songs.

It was the 70s. Nobody bothered about song lyrics back then.
You can't compare 70s stuff to current days. Everything was very different.

They did. I remember the top 30 countdown always skipped over Judge Dredd/Dread. Just remembered that and that I never heard any of the songs.

Wings got 'Give Ireland back to the Irish' and 'Hi, hi, hi' banned as assumed to be about drugs.

You make me tremble when your hand moves lower
You taste a little then you swallow slower
Nature has a way of yielding treasure
Pleasure made for you, oh....

Get in the middle of a chain reaction
You get a medal when you're lost in action
I want to get your love all ready for the sweet sensation
Instant radiation
You let me hold you for the first explosion
We get a picture of our love in motion
My arms will cover, my lips will smother you
With no more left to say

And?

"With all the charms of a woman
You've kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe you're old enough
To give me love
And now it hurts to know the truth
Beneath your perfume and make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
And though you know
That it's wrong to be
Alone with me
That 'come on' look is in your eyes
Woah, oh, oh
Young girl
Get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl"

'Young Girl' by Gary Picket and Union Gap. No 1 in 1968 and in the charts again in 1974.

Yes. Also Run To Me by the Bee Gees - am I unwise to open up your eyes to love me? Now and then you need someone older.
Also Living Doll by Cliff Richard - She does her best to please me (etc. but basically she's just a robot sex doll).

Do you think songs about heartbreak in love should be banned then? That's an awful lot of songs...
(They'd better leave It Had To Be You alone, that's one of my favourites "And even be glad just to be sad thinking of you")

Female songwriters have been sending bad messages for years. Its not new.

From the 70s / 80s

Respectfully, I say to thee, I'm aware that you're cheating, but no one makes me feel like you do.

Those lyrics are pretty tame tbh

Swing Lo. Slave song. Offensive and yet still the England Rugby song……:

It was sung by enslaved people about being set free from slavery. Do you think they'd mind if they knew it was still being sung today?

my sharona and him getting it up for the touch of the younger kind.

lots of songs are really dodgy

I’ll throw in Young Girl from the late 60s

Also summertime by Mungo Jerry - there’s an ice cream van round here with that tune and it annoys me 🤣 DH makes himself scarce if we hear it as he knows there will be a rant incoming

If you listen to the lyrics of Young Girl hes telling her that she is too young and she needs to go home. Hes doing the gentlemanly thing.
Same with Abba's "does your mother know"
One of the very rare numbers sung by kne of the guys

Exactly right. Yeah I think they would - the NAACP says it is a slap in the face to the history of slavery. I know when I moved here I was actually shocked it was being sung so openly (and I don’t use that hyperbolically).

I think you are being ridiculous, OP. Why do you think people shouldn't be allowed to listen to ones that you dislike?

HelenaWilson · 02/03/2026 20:12

Yes, I can never understand what's so wrong about Young Girl. I remember when it first came out and the message was quite clear. 'You're much too young girl.'

ItWasObviouslyGoingToHappenYouPlum · 02/03/2026 20:12

MonsteraDeliciosa · 02/03/2026 14:02

No, not it's not saying that at all, it's saying she enjoys the situation:

"I don't want you to ever quit"
"Cause this hurting feeling is, ooh, so good to me"

It's a stupid song, for sure, but from another time.

I'm confused by the mention of "Relax" and "Chain Reaction" on here; they're not about abuse and not remotely comparable.

Rhianna and Eminem’s “love the way you lie” is probably more comparable than chain reaction or relax.

Honestly, there are some MNers who would only approve of songs if the lyrics were:

You treat me right
And respectfully
And if you stopped treating me so well
Then I would leave
Ooh ooh baby

and the second verse goes

Oh darling, lets make a list of the chores
I'll do mine and you do yours
When we're finished up we'll have a meal with our mums and dads, can't we?
Although your mum's so awful I'll be going NC
Oooh ooh baby, baby baby
